Aaron Herres is a pivotal posthumous character in the 2017 video game Horizon Zero Dawn.

He was a shrewd and sophisticated U.S. Army General and the final leader of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as a former commander of the U.S. Robot Command, being the forerunner behind the automation of the U.S. military. He was famous for spearheading the military counteroffensive known as Operation: Enduring Victory when the Faro Plague struck.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

  • While Herres was responsible for the automation of the U.S. Army in 2060 without knowing the future, utterly devastating consequences of such decision, Herres would soon feel deep remorse over it when the Faro Plague struck in 2064, as seen in his final datapoint, "Herres Testimonial", where he mentioned all of his greatest mistakes during his term, thus subverting every corrupting factor he had.
  • He spearheaded Operation: Enduring Victory, a last-resort military counteroffensive by all human soldiers across Earth, in order to buy the Zero Dawn Alphas the necessary time needed to finish GAIA before the inevitable happened.
  • Herres' efforts were significant to the creation of Zero Dawn, as seen by the numerous corpses of soldiers and remnants of war scattered around not just within the Sundom and the Sacred Lands, but also in the Forbidden West, where humanity heroically sacrificed themselves for Sobeck and the Alphas to complete Zero Dawn, as seen in the present time.
  • While Enduring Victory and the kidnapping of the brilliant minds on Earth (attributing to the project's extreme secrecy) are seen as a rather pragmatic decision, it was a last-resort decision that benefited not just the Alphas, but also the new humans of Earth in the long run.
