I can hear it. I can hear the planet.
~ Aerith Gainsborough
Y'know... if you think about it, life and death are just two sides of the same coin. Our bodies may disappear when we die, but our spirits still live on. We return to the planet, rejoin the lifestream, and in time, give rise to new life. Knowing that the people we love aren't really gone? It doesn't make it any easier to let them go. It still hurts. So we just can't think of it as a "homecoming." 'Cause it's not that simple. We've all experienced pain. We all have our regrets. What we've done, what's been done to us, that's set in stone. The past is forever. But the future, even if it has been written, can be changed. It's true that the pain and the anger we carry can make us stronger. But at what cost? What toll does it take? I believe true strength doesn't come from any of that. True strength comes from our ability to forgive, to forge ahead in the hope of making things right. It comes from ourselves. So focus on the future, not the past. Do that, and not even Sephiroth will be able to stand in our way. Not even him.
~ Aerith

Aerith Gainsborough is a playable character in Final Fantasy VII and one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Zack) of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. She is a recurring character in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, appearing as a supporting character in Advent Children, Before Crisis and Crisis Core.

She is the last of the Cetra, an ancient race with powerful magical abilities, and so the Shinra Electric Power Company hunts her throughout her life, seeking to exploit her powers.

In Japanese, she is voiced by Chihiro Tanaka as a youth in the Remake, and Maaya Sakamoto in all other speaking roles. In English, she is voiced by Mandy Moore in Kingdom Hearts, Mena Suvari in Kingdom Hearts II and Advent Children, Briana White and Capri Oliver in Final Fantasy VII Remake as an adult and a youth respectively, and Andrea Bowen in all other speaking roles.

What makes her Pure Good?[]

  • Along with Tifa, in a game where most of the heroes are flawed and morally grey at worst, Aerith is the only other character who is outright selfless and lacks antiheroic qualities.
  • Aerith cares for nature as she grows flowers in a church and her home.
  • She helped Cloud to reunite with her friends.
  • While she is aware of Tifa being Cloud's love interest, rather than being envious, she and Cloud save Tifa from Don Corneo and his goons. It also proved that she does not obsessively love Cloud, as well as gets along with Tifa.
  • Encouraged a doubtful Wedge to keep trying and moving forward.
  • She rescued Marlene, Betty, and the rest of Sector 7 before the area's destruction, the former leading to Shinra holding her hostage. She also helps Betty reunite with her father.
    • When she finds Marlene in the bar trying to get to safety, they are captured by Tseng and Shinra, upon which she makes a deal with Tseng where she allows herself to be captured by Shinra in exchange for Marlene getting safety taken to her adoptive mother Elmyra Gainsborough's house in the Sector 5 slums.
  • She refused to be corrupted by Professor Hojo. She also calmed an enraged Red XIII before attacking the team.
  • In the Remake, she helped Cloud and his team to fight against Sephiroth.
  • After her death at the hands of Sephiroth, her lifestream prevented his meteor from destroying the planet.
  • While Tifa is Pure Good for trying to save the planet despite her (initial) misguidance, Aerith stands out for her kindness to children, love of nature, selflessness, and fighting when necessary.
  • When Tseng was almost stabbed and killed by Sephiroth, she reveals to Tseng that she never hated him.
  • She forgave Cait Sith for his betrayal.
