~ Ali Abdul to Seong Gi-hun after the first game.

Ali Abdul (Korean: 알리 압둘), also referred to as Player 199, is a major character in the first season of the South Korean Netflix drama TV series Squid Game. Ali is a migrant worker from Pakistan that came to South Korea with his wife and child, and later joined the Squid Game to win the prize money for his family. During the games, Ali joins Seong Gi-hun and Cho Sang-woo's team.

He was portrayed by Anupam Tripathi.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

  • Unlike many others in the Squid Game, Ali was not invited to join because of a debt, but because he was poor due to reasons that weren't his fault.
  • He saves Seong Gi-hun in the first game (Red Light, Green Light), even before the two of them knew each other, risking his life as the doll easily could have caught and killed them.
  • Voted to end the Squid Games with no hesitation, not wanting more people to die.
  • Although he caused his boss to crush his fingers with a crusher, it is worth noting that this was accidental, with Ali being horrified at the result and his employer also refused to pay the money he needed for his wife and his 1 year old child.
    • Ali also tried to remain civil with his boss even after the latter attacked him, begging him not to swear at him and never hitting him back.
  • Gave the money he stole from his boss to his wife, so that she and their child could get back to Pakistan safely.
  • Chose to go back to the Squid Game and risk his own life to help his family. While he did return knowing death would be the consequence of losing, he had no knowledge some games (such as Tug-of-War) would involve actually killing other players.
  • He is shown to be polite and humble, repeatedly thanking Cho Sang-woo for giving him money for the bus, allowing him to use his phone and buying food for him.
  • He is honest and never lied to anyone in the series, even admitting to his team that he doesn't know the Korean children's games.
  • He constantly shows concern for other members of his team and is always happy and relieved when they survive the games.
  • During the night fight after the second game, he saves Gi-hun again with the help of Sang-woo, defending him from Player 413 and then from Player 113. Ali also helps his group to defend Sae-byeok from Deok-su's team, forcing them back with a large piece of the bed when they start to overpower his team.
  • Helps to look for Il-nam as he's missing in the nighttime riot and is relieved to see he's okay afterwards.
  • Invited Player 276 to join his team before the third game due to him being from Pakistan too.
  • Used his strength to help his team win the Tug-of-War game, pulling Gi-hun back from falling over the edge when they take three steps forward as part of Sang-woo's plan. Like the rest of his team, he takes no joy in having to pull the other players to their deaths.
  • Despite somewhat playfully mocking Han Mi-nyeo after the third game, this is to point out that she wasn't telling the truth about trusting Sang-woo with his plan during the Tug-of-War. And even then, the scene is played somewhat for laughs.
    • When Mi-nyeo starts insulting him, he doesn't argue back with her. Instead, he just looks away sadly.
  • Helped his team set up a barricade to protect themselves in case Deok-su's team tried to start another riot.
  • After the Tug-of-War game, he keeps night watch with Sang-woo to alert their team if Deok-su tries anymore attacks while also giving the corn he received for dinner to Sang-woo in gratitude for saving his life during the third game.
  • Despite becoming close friends with Sang-woo during the games and being happy when Sang-woo asks to play with him in the fourth game, Ali is considerate and initially hesitates to accept the offer because he sees that Gi-hun was about to ask Sang-woo to be his partner. Knowing about Sang-woo and Gi-hun's very close relationship, Ali only accepts Sang-woo's offer when Gi-hun says that it is okay because he will look for someone else to be his game partner.
  • Being horrified over having to play marbles with Sang-woo, he asks a masked soldier to play the Marbles game with a different contestant, because he doesn't want to cause his friend's death.
  • Even when Sang-woo got violent, starting to grab and yell at him, Ali never retaliated or got hostile towards Sang-woo despite being the stronger man.
  • Despite him not being willing to sacrifice himself for Sang-woo in the Marbles game (like Ji-yeong did for Sae-byeok), it is understandable as Ali tells Sang-woo that he also has a family waiting for him to return. He is visibly upset as he tells Sang-woo this, crying and apologizing to him.
  • He is trusting and naïve, to the point that he believes when Sang-woo says that there is a way for them both survive the Marbles game. He even gives his marble pouch to Sang-woo, before heading off to check on the other teams as part of the plan so that him and Sang-woo can both pass the game. This ultimately is a trick, causing Ali's downfall. However, he doesn't show anger after being betrayed. He only demonstrates distraughtness and sadness when he is about to die and his death is played for sympathy.
  • He has none of the corrupting factors that the other characters have. In the end, Ali was simply too kind and pure to survive the Squid Games.

Trivia[]

  • So far, he is the only Squid Game character who's considered Pure Good.
  • Initially he was considered to be Near Pure Good, given that he caused his boss's fingers to be crushed and mocked Han Mi-nyeo, but then was approved PG due to both of his bad actions being unintentional. Not to mention, these were also both justifiable since his boss refused to pay him the money he deserved and Mi-nyeo was far from honest.
