Alphonse Elric, also known as Al and the Armored Alchemist, is the deuteragonist of the anime/manga series Fullmetal Alchemist. He is the son of Van Hohenheim and Trisha Elric, and the younger brother of Edward Elric.
Before the start of the series his soul is contained in a suit of armor due to him losing his body in a failed human alchemy transmutation, in an attempt to get their deceased mother back. This story revolves Ed and Al as they journey around the world in search of the Philosopher's Stone to restore their bodies back.
He is voiced by Rie Kugimiya in the Japanese version of both anime series, by Aaron Dismuke in the English version of the 2003 series, and by Maxey Whitehead in the English version of Brotherhood.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
He doesn't hold any animosity towards Ed for convincing him to try and resurrect their mother through human transmutation even though it caused him to lose his body, instead choosing to place responsibility on himself for going along with the plan.
After the transmutation failed, he carried his brother to the Rockbells' house for emergency surgery and begged Pinako to save his brother.
Helped Edward expose the priest Cornello as a fraud and reveals the priest's plan to the people of Reoole to fool them.
When he gets allowed into Halling's inn after he and his brother get kicked out due to Edward's status as a State Alchemist, Al, instead of utilizing the opportunity solely for his own gain, decides to use it to get some food to share with Edward, who had been locked out of the establishment in the cold weather.
Liberated the town of Youswell from the clutches of Yoki.
Thwarted a train hijacking.
He stops Ed from beating Tucker even though he's equally furious at him for turning his daughter into a chimera.
When Edward exchanges his life to Scar in order to spare him, he berates his brother over giving up his life so easily to Scar and stresses the importance of staying alive no matter what.
Upon learning that the Philosopher's Stone was created from human life, both he and Ed choose not to use its power in order to get their bodies back.
While he was mad at Edward for his existence being a lie, it was mainly a ploy by Barry the Chopper and once Winry reveals that Edward blames himself for loosing Al's body he is horrified by his own faithlessness, and reconciles with Edward.

Despite Barry having psychologically toyed with him and causing his inner conflict, he was still willing to work with him.
Protects Hawkeye from Lust's vicious attacks, refusing to leave her and rejects the idea of letting someone close to him die while he has a chance to save him.
Condemns Scar for murdering the Tuckers, and when Scar replies on how alchemy has turned Nina into a chimera never to regain her humanity. He wracked with guilt by his inaction in the face of his and Edward's inability to revert Nina back to her normal.
Protests against Winry's attempts to shoot Scar.
Prevents Scar from attacking Winry and Edward any further, and before he chases after him, he scolds Ed for being reckless and demands him that he should get Winry to safety.
Scar comments to him that his metal body is a product of alchemy and wonders how he can defend and put his trust into a practise that has cursed him. He responds saying that though his metal body can be a hinderance at times, it is not the same thing as a curse; pitying himself that if he doesn't use his body he would be denying his brother's sacrifice for him since he is the one who kept him alive this allows him to keep moving forward despite all the tragedies.
Picks up Xiao Mei, mistaking her as a black and white cat, and takes care of her while she's away from Mei Chang.

Dr Marcoh informs him that Edward is missing after the mineshaft Baschool collapsed, instead of rushing to look for him he decides to stay with the group and press on with investigating the nation wide Transmutation Circle. Since he believes it is what Edward would have done.
Unlike his older brother, even after Hohenheim left them at such a young age, when he firsts meet him he doesn't hesitate on calling him his 'Dad', instantly forgiving him for abandoning their family.
Helps reconstruct the city of Reole.
Makes a plan with Hohenheim to use himself as bait to worm out Pride then trap him in an earthen dome, by Hohenheim, since he doesn't require any oxygen he will be safe. He planned to trap him until the Promised Day passed.
While imprisoned with Pride, he talks with him, getting Pride to open up about his mother and how she loved him.
Tries to escape from Pride's grasp by destroying his own legs, creates a dust cloud and attempts to escape with a severely wounded Heinkel.
Heinkel tries to convinces him to retreat without himself, he refuses this allows Heinkel to give Al the Philosopher's Stone and use it against Kimblee and Pride.
Lets himself be captured by Pride, so that Marcoh and Yoki could use the stone to heal Heinkel.
At his Gate, when his Truth asks him if he wants to return to how he was before, but seeing how weak and malnourished it was, he decides to return in his suit of armor so he can fight properly to protect his loved ones after realizing there was no way he could fight with his original form.
When Father creates a gigantic explosion Al throws himself in front of May to protect her, this leaves him in ruins, with both his legs gone and his seal slightly cracked.
Made a quick and difficult decision on transmuting his own soul with May's help, in order to restore his older brother's arm and give him a winning chance against Father.
When his armor came back from Central, he decided to have it melted down and be made into auto mail parts to help anyone else it could as a sign of respect.
He acts as Ed's moral compass, stopping him whenever he acts rashly and constantly tempering his anger.
Unlike his older brother, Alphonse lacks the corrupting qualities such as his temper, arrogance, and conceit, remaining much humbler and more supportive in comparison and only interested in helping the people he cared about.
