~ Amalthea breaking down in tears after being transformed into a human being |
The Unicorn, better known as her human name Lady Amalthea, is the protagonist of the book The Last Unicorn, and the 1982 English-language Japanese film based on it. She is an Irish unicorn who aims to find the other unicorns, who are rumored to have disappeared.
She was voiced by Mia Farrow.
What Makes Her Pure Good?[]
- Despite being a unicorn before turning into a human, she begins to have a clear moral agency throughout the story as the more she spends as a human, the more human her psyche becomes. Thus, she starts to feel emotions unicorns cannot understand, or cannot feel, such as remorse, love and anger. And she starts to see humans in a different light, and becomes a more humble creature.
- When the other unicorns go missing, she goes across Ireland to find out what happened to them, with her friends Molly and Schmendrick.
- Although she lets the harpy at Fortuna's freakshow go, despite her being a dangerous beast, it is only because she is more concerned about animal cruelty.
- She falls in love with Prince Lir, and although she considers abandoning her quest in favor of mortal love, it is only because of her new human emotions so while it can be a little selfish thing, it is understandable.
- Enraged that Prince Lir gets killed by the Red Bull for defending her, she turns on the Bull and forces him into the sea. This causes the release of the missing hundreds of unicorns and the death of King Haggard.
- She revives Lir before leaving him and saying goodbye.
- When Lir apologizes to her for burdening her with regret and the taint of mortality (which could make her unable to properly rejoin her kind) she disagrees about the importance of his actions, saying that they had helped restore unicorns to the world and made her experience regret and love.
