Arnold Phillip Shortman is the titular main protagonist of the 1996 Nickelodeon animated television series Hey Arnold!.
He is voiced by J.D. Daniels (original pilot), Lane Toran (season 1), Phillip Van Dyke (seasons 2–3), Spencer Klein (season 4; 17/20 episodes in season 5; The Movie), Rusty Flood (as a baby/toddler in "Parents Day" and "Helga on the Couch"), Alex D. Linz ("April Fools Day" and "The Journal"), Mason Vale Cotton (Jungle Movie), and Zane VanWicklyn (Nickelodeon Extreme Tennis and Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway).
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- Arnold is a very friendly, compassionate, and pacifistic kid who always sees the best in people no matter how unkind they are, and he regularly goes out of his way to change people's lives for the better.
- Even as a small child, Arnold had been shown to be good-natured and compassionate, showing acts of kindness to classmate Helga, such as sharing his umbrella while they were in the rain.
- He helped Stoop Kid leave the stoop.
- He allowed Dino Spumoni to reunite with his old partner Don.
- He took it upon himself to re-unite his neighbor Mr. Hyunh with his long-lost daughter Mai for Christmas.
- He had Pigeon Man escape the cage of his old rooftop habitat.
- He helped Coach Wittenberg go back to being coach.
- He never tries to take revenge on Helga, despite her bullying him a lot.
- He felt remorse for participating in the hazing of Mr. Simmons.
- He felt guilty for using Timberly to get to Lila, as he apologizes later to both of them.
- He saved the neighborhood from Scheck.
- He exposed Scheck's true nature to the rest of the citizens of his neighborhood, even both Mayor Dixie and the construction workers.
- He felt remorse for trusting Lasombra.
- He rejected joining Lasombra.
- He prevented Lasombra from killing Eduardo.
- He cured the Green-Eyed People from a weird sleep sickness that contaminated their city, including his parents Miles and Stella.

- Arnold is the first character from Nickelodeon to be Pure Good.
- Throughout the entire series and up to The Jungle Movie, Arnold has been a true hero in his own neighborhood by helping and reasoning with his friends and loved ones in solving their problems they've been facing and other things as well, which he is very similar to Samurai Jack.
