“ | I know it wasn't a very long time, but... I'm so blessed to have made a friend like you... I wish it would have been different. It would've been great to have grown up in this country, gone to your school... I never wanted to make you cry. Oh, Issei. I'm sorry. Goodbye... | „ |
~ Asia's final words to Issei Hyoudou before her initial death. |
Asia Argento is one of the main characters of the 2008 light novel series High School DxD along with its 2010-2018 manga adaptation and 2012 anime adaptation. She was a girl abandoned by her parents at a convent and raised by the church. After they discovered her Sacred Gear, Twilight Healing, they believed it to be a miracle and she acted as a healer for the church until she was caught having healed a devil (who was later revealed to be Diodora Astaroth, who was trying to capture her and make her his devil servant for his own twisted fantasies), after which she was excommunicated for witchcraft. Exiled, she was forced to live under the protection and service of the fallen angels until her master, Raynare, killed her for her rare Sacred Gear.
Before that, she had formed a close friendship with a devil named Issei Hyoudou, who attempted to rescue her and defeated her fallen angel master. His master, Rias Gremory, would then revive her, reincarnating her into a devil servant alongside Issei, whom she would live alongside from then on. Despite now being a devil and being unable to pray or read the Bible for a while, she maintains her faith and pure heart.
She is voiced in Japanese by Azumi Asakura and voiced in English by Chloe Daniels in seasons 1-3 of the anime and Leah Clark in season 4 onward.
What Makes Her Pure Good?[]
- She does not discriminate against beings whom the Church, at the time, would have shunned, such as devils, going so far as to say she was blessed by God to be friends with one. Even after being excommunicated by the Church, she goes on to help the devil Issei Hyoudou and heal him.
- She embodies the Judeo-Christian value of "The Golden Rule," largely treating others with love and kindness, only showing disdain to evil people who seek to do harm to her, Issei, or her other friends, such as Raynare, Diodora Astaroth, or Freed Sellzen.
- She still had a good heart despite formerly working for a wicked, heartless fallen angel like Raynare and endures working alongside the violent and abusive Freed Sellzen.
- She maintains her faith in God despite becoming a devil and later learning from Kokabiel that God as a being had been killed in her world centuries prior. She continues to try and pray and learn from the scriptures despite it hurting her until Michael dispelled that curse on her and Xenovia Quarta, another believer who was wrongly excommunicated by the church and became a devil under Rias' protection.
- She devotes her life to serving others, including and especially devils like Issei, Rias, and the rest of the Occult Research Club to the point she has little-to-no offensive capability. Even though she has moments of jealousy towards Rias and the other women in the group for their own romantic relationships with Issei, she still loves Issei and her friends with all her heart and will lay down her life to protect them.
- She volunteered herself and sacrificed much of her clothes to help Issei perfect his, albeit twisted, Dress Break technique.
- She defends Issei when Diodora tried to take her away from Rias' family of devils, slapping him when he insulted Issei as a "filthy dragon" and endures Diodora's kidnapping and torture of her for Issei's sake.
- At one point, when Issei is believed to have been killed, she resists the urge to take her own life because she knows her doing so, even if it would mean reuniting with him, would sadden Issei.
- When Issei struggles to be open with his romantic feelings towards Rias, it is Asia who helps him confront his trauma related to Raynare's murder of both of them that caused this anxiety, taking the initiative to help comfort Issei and helping Akeno and Koneko to do the same and understand the trauma he was facing with her.
- Compared to the other devils in the series, many of whom make little hesitation attempting to jump on Issei's bones at the drop of a hat and harbor malicious feelings against certain characters and groups, she has much purer motivations and philosophies and seeks to help anyone in need.
Trivia[]
- She is the only character from the High School DxD to qualify as Pure Good, which is impressive considering the series is known for having a cast who, for the most part, is overly perverted, violent, or possess other corrupting qualities that disqualify them from being considered.
