Pure Good Wiki

I am. But there I am known by another name. This was the very reason you were brought to Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little, you may know me better there.
~ Aslan hinting at who he really is.

Aslan is the overarching protagonist of The Chronicles of Narnia series.

He is an extremely powerful and magical lion and the Creator, Guardian and True King of Narnia and has done his best to protect it and make it flourish over the centuries. He has succeeded in helping and saving many people to rule Narnia and helped it be the wonderful country that it was. Eventually he destroyed the old Narnia and brought all his believers, including the 7 friends of Narnia (not including Susan) to live in his country forever.

He was voiced by Liam Neeson (who also played Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars and Jean Valjean in Les Miserables (1998)) in the Disney live-action versions, and by Stephen Torne in the 1979 animated film.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

In General[]

  • He has always existed as the very concept of Righteousness throughout Narnia. Despite being made out of goodness, however, there is no indication that he has moral agency issues and doesn't consciously choose to be on the good side of his own accord.
  • He has been protecting innumerable countries, worlds, realms, and dimensions for an extremely long time.
  • He is always wholly faithful to the Emperor Beyond the Sea.

The Magician's Nephew[]

  • He created Narnia with the intent to protect it and let it live in peace and joy.
  • Helped Digory see the error of his ways about waking up Jadis the White Witch when he went to ask him for an apple to cure his mother.
  • Sent Digory to get an apple from the garden in the Westen Wild to make a tree that the White Witch would stay away from.
  • Gave Digory an apple from that tree, which he used to heal his mother and make into the wardrobe that the Pevensie siblings went into.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe[]

  • It's heavily implied he briefly manifested his presence into Faun Tumnus' fireplace on purpose to sternly warn him not to give up Lucy Pevensie to the White Witch, with good results.
  • In the 1979 version, it was he who gave Lucy a cordial derived from fire flowers and a reverse dagger, Susan a supernatural horn, and Peter a mighty sword, in lieu of Father Christmas doing this. These gifts would help them enormously and prevent them from being completely defenseless against the White Witch.
  • Selflessly offered himself to be killed in Edmund's place when the White Witch staked a claim on Edmund because of his treachery.
    • This says even more about him in the 1979 adaptation, where there's no indication the Turkish delight was cursed to control Edmund against his wishes and Aslan sacrificed himself for him anyway.
  • Let Susan and Lucy follow him to comfort him and let them ride on him to save the people in the Witch's house.
  • Brought life back into the dozens of people the White Which turned to stone and defeated the White Witch and her Army.
  • While transfiguring Jadis' body into smoke in the 1979 adaptation and mauling her with his paws in the 2005 film adaptation were both brutal ways to kill her, it was to stop Jadis for good and bring peace and she absolutely deserved it.
    • Although he did not come to Narnia's rescue sooner and you could argue he callously left Jadis to do whatever she wanted to its people so he could be a comforting boon at the last minute when people were most vulnerable, this is an askew perception of Aslan's actions because he had thousands of other regions, worlds, and dimensions to protect from dark forces that were every bit as malevolent as Jadis if not worse, and Narnia didn't have the four kings and queens yet anyway.
  • Provided the Narnians with a feast after the battle with the White Witch and turned the people who had been turned to stone at Beruna back while Lucy cured the others with a cordial.
  • Crowned the Pevensie Siblings in Cair Paravel to reign for many years to keep the peace.

The Horse and His Boy[]

  • Pushed the boat Cor/Shasta was in to the right place for Arsheesh to pick him up.
  • Pretended to be a wild lion to push Shasta and Aravis together so they could travel together.
  • Comforted Shasta as a cat and frightened the Jackels away from where he was sleeping.
  • Scared Bree and Hwin enough for them out outrun Rabadash's army and reach the Hermit of the Southern March.
  • Scratched Aravis in the back so she could see what pain she inflicted on her stepmother's slave because she escaped.
  • Explained to Shasta that he was the Lion that protected him the entire time.
    • And also kept on the side of the cliff so Shasta could make it safely into Narnia.
  • Explained to Bree that he was actually a lion and he was mistaken and helped him see the error of his ways.
  • Helped Aravis see what she had done after explaining why she had scratched her.
  • Gave Rabadash a chance at redemption before turning him into a donkey and a chance to live a normal life if he left Narnia and Archenland alone.

Prince Caspian[]

  • Had Lucy talk with him when she found him and told her how to get down to where they needed to be.
  • Tested Peter, Susan, and Edmund to see if they believed in him by slowly revealing himself and seeing if they would trust Lucy.
  • Helped Lucy realize she was in the wrong when she thought the others wouldn't comply and was angry with them.
  • Helped Susan see the error of her ways and helped her trust in him again.
  • Helped Trumpkin see who he really was and let him trust him.
  • Paraded merrily around Beruna bringing joy to many people.
  • Let a girl named Gwendolyn join their party after Aslan turned the classroom she was in into a bunch of plants.
  • Let a teacher who was teaching very rude boys arithmetic join them & turned presumably turned the boys into pigs.
  • Turned a man who was beating a boy into a tree.
  • Feasted the Narnians after the parade like procession.
  • Gave the Telmarines who didn't want to live in Narnia a new home on an island in the Pacific and explained Caspian's lineage to everyone and him.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader[]

  • Turned Eustace back into a boy after he did what he said.
  • Saved the people on the Dawn Treader from the Dark Island by destroying it and leading them out as an albatross.
  • Told Lucy and Edmund why they had really come to Narnia and helped them realize what they needed to do in their own world.

The Silver Chair[]

  • Brought Eustace and Jill to Narnia in order to find Prince Rillian.
  • Told Jill what she had to do and realize the error of her ways.
  • Told Jill in a dream when she was asleep to get back on the path of following the signs while she was at Harfang.
  • Showed he was protecting them by bringing Rillian's shield back into color with the red lion imprinted on it.

The Last Battle[]

  • Told Caspian to turn back and that he would find his son returned.
  • Came to take Jill and Eustace and told them they had done what he asked.
  • Resurrected Caspian by having Eustace prick his pad with an enormous thorn in a thicket.
  • Finally let Caspian see a glimpse of our world.
  • Helped the situation back at Experiment House by letting Caspian, Jill, and Eustace scare the boys and led to Experiment House becoming a much nicer place.
  • Transported the 7 friends of Narnia (temporarily minus Eustace and Jill since they came to Narnia first) to his country after the train crash happened.
  • Didn't let Susan in because she wasn't there, and presumably did that so she could have more time to think and grow closer to him.
  • Gave the Narnians a chance to trust him and go into his country when they went up to the door of the stable before he destroyed Narnia.
  • Explained to Emeth that the way he was looking for Tash led him to really be looking for Him.
  • Came down the cliffs after all the people who came in at the door, including the 7 friends of Narnia, and presumably explained to Puzzle what he had done to make him see what he was involved in and told him he was forgiven right after.
  • Although he destroyed Narnia, it's only because he had to.
  • Explained to the 7 friends of Narnia that they died in the train crash and let them stay with him along with all the other Narnians and inhabitants forever.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only Chronicles of Narnia character to be considered Pure Good, and fittingly so given how he is the completely righteous figure of the series.
