Asuna Yuuki is the deuteragonist of the Sword Art Online franchise.
She is Kirito's girlfriend, fiancé, and in-game wife. She is an incredibly fast rapier user (earning her the nickname "Lightning Flash") and was the second-in-command of the top guild in SAO, the Knights of the Blood Oath.
She is voiced by Haruka Tomatsu in Japanese, and Cherami Leigh in English, who also voices Lucy Heartfilia in Fairy Tail and Kudelia Aina Bernstein in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans.
What Makes Her Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- Asuna is very kind and helpful, very emotion-based and unable to abandon someone in trouble, hating those who victimize the weak. When she sees some rogue players in SAO trying to steal "tax money" from some kids, she doesn't hesitate in teaching them a lesson.
- Initially, Asuna used to be a little bit too prideful, rude, and arrogant in addition to falling slightly short of the admirable standards, but very much grows out of it as of the Alicization arc, with her more active role from there onwards. Though she might a bit brash when mentioning her love life, most of these situations are played for laughs or are shown as understandable.
- She has unconditional kindness and love towards young children, as shown by her interactions with the charges of the orphanage, Silica, Yuuki and of course, her "daughter" Yui. She serves as a mom to the Heroes of Aincrad, always looking out for her younger friends and showing concern for their wellbeing. Asuna is so motherly that she is practically the ideal of the warm, kind, gentle and loving mother in contemporary Light Novel and Anime, who cares for and nurtures the emotional wellbeing of her daughter Yui while taking into account how her nature as a Mental Health A.I. affects her.
Aincrad and Progressive[]
- Was involved in the operation to eliminate the Laughing Coffin guild in SAO through the raid on their headquarters, to put an end to the hundreds of murders they committed there.
- Makes a heroic sacrifice as she jumps in the way of a blade meant for Kirito, in the final battle of the Aincrad arc, and she dies smiling to him after that. Although she survives it, she had no way of knowing that.
- While her mother expects her to marry a man wealthy enough so she can have the stability necessary to have a career of her own without financial risks, Asuna on her part, does want a career of her own, but be with the man she loves, showing she primarily cares about love and honor.
- Convinces her mother to let go of her insecurities in a talk.
Fairy Dance[]
- After being kidnapped by Nobuyuki Sugou, goes to investigate his illegal experimentations, playing a role in his arrest.
- Gives Kirito and Yui the access card to free herself, and allowing them to defeat Sugou.
Phantom Bullet and Calibur[]
- Arranges Seijirou to meet her in ALO to explain the purpose of Kirito's adventure in GGO.
- Resolves to look for Kirito at the hospital believing she was unable to protect him.
- Supports the heroes on a journey to look for Excalibur in ALfheim Online.
Mother's Rosario and Sister's Prayer[]
- Accepts Yuuki Konno and her guild members, the Sleeping Knights' offers to place their names on the Monument of Swordsmen.
- Her absolute refusal to let Yuuki just fade away hearing of her terminal illness is one of her kindest non-romantic acts, with her repeatedly going completely out of her way to make Yuuki's last few months as amazing as possible and then going on to more or less dedicate her own life to Yuuki's memory.
- Befriended Yuuki Konno and helped her with her fights in SAO and ALO.
- After Yuuki died, she respectfully attended her memorial service.
Ordinal Scale[]
- While Asuna had to initially leave behind Klein after fighting a few initial bosses, it was mainly due to them being able to take on them without his assistance, also helped that she still displays a good amount of concern for him when he was hospitalised.
- Sacrifices her life to push Silica out of range from a lethal boss attack, all while she would eventually know that her memories would be collected, risking brain damage.
- Together with the SAO survivors, defeats the 100th floor boss to stop the mass extraction of the SAO survivors' memories at the stadium.
Alicization and Moon Cradle[]
- When Johnny Black attacked Kirito and her with poison, she tried her best to protect herself and Kirito before the latter got stabbed.
- Despite being angry with Kikuoka regarding taking Kirito away despite objections from his family, she decided to let it go after Kikuoka explained to her and Rinko Kojiro why such a move was necessary. She decided to stay on the Ocean Turtle to watch over Kirito and his health progress.
- Forgives Rinko despite her involvement in enabling the Sword Art Online accident with Akihiko Kayaba.
- Logs into the Underworld to escort Alice and rescue Kirito, before going on to fend off the invading Dark Knights and decoy army, overloading her fluctlight to terraform the battlefield.
- Accepts Ishkan's offer to fight with him and the Pugilists by building a bridge for them.
- Confronts Vassago, distracting him long enough for Kirito to restore his own fluctlight, awaken from his coma and defeat him for good.
- Escorts Alice to the World's End Altar to safety back to the real world, while Kirito fights off Gabriel Miller, preventing him from stalking and abducting Alice for his own nefarious purposes.
- After sending Alice back to the real world, Asuna chooses to stay in the Underworld for 200 years knowing that Kirito wouldn't make it to the World's End Altar before the time acceleration, and that he would be stuck in UW for that amount of time as a result, before eventually leaving the simulation with him.
Trivia[]
- She was initially approved as Near Pure Good with the prevention that she initially failed the standard to other characters. However, she was proposed and approved for Pure Good with the Alicization arc granting her a more active role in the story which increased her admirability enough for her to qualify.
- She, Alice, and Yuuki are the only Sword Art Online PG heroes as of now.
