Tobio Tenma, better known as Atom, is the deuteragonist of the science fiction manga and anime series Pluto. He's a robot created by Professor Tenma, modeled after his late son, who's widely considered one of the best AI in the world. He's the series' reimagining of Osamu Tezuka's character, Astro Boy.
He's voiced by Yoko Hikasa, who also voiced Kyoko Kirigiri in Danganronpa. In the english dub, he is voiced by Laura Stahl.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- While he is an artificial intelligence, it is shown countless times in the story that the robots in this universe possess somewhat of a conscience of their own due to how advanced they are. Atom himself is also stated to be an extremely advanced AI who can replicate humans almost perfectly and shows numerous times that he possesses full moral agency and chooses to do good out of his own volition.
- While his creator, Professor Tenma, initially disowns him due to him lacking all the flaws his deceased son had, which could potentially mean that he's programmed to be good, Atom still exhibits knowledge of right from wrong and showcases full awareness of his actions. Regardless, any potential moral agency issue he had was subverted after his revival, where he gained a "perfect AI" and is noted by Brau-1589 that he now "has the heart human being".
- During the 39th Central Asian War, Atom participated as an embassador for world peace.
- After reading Gesicht's memory card, Atom excuses himself to the bathroom and sheds tears for him, showcasing that, despite being a robot, he possesses full emotional empathy.
- He helps the Europol in their search for the Pluto killer, by analyzing the crime scene and finding important details that were crucial in the investigation.
- After Goji slips past the Europol's security in Professor Ochanomizu's house, Atom immediately rushes there to save him after receiving a distressed signal from the robot dog of professor's grandson, Takashi.
- Despite knowing the risk and being aware that it was all a ploy to get him killed by Pluto, Atom rushes into the house of Professor Ochanomizu's family to save them from Pluto's tornado, sacrificing himself in the process.
- Although he became hateful and filled with anger upon being revived by Professor Tenma using Gesicht's memory card, Atom very quickly manages to process all this hatred and goes back to his normal self, now with stabilized emotions.
- He helps redeem the misanthropic, homicidal robot Brau-1589, making him change his mind about humanity and leading to him saving it by killing Dr. Roosevelt.
- Before his fight with Pluto, he pays a visit to Gesicht's widow, Helena, in order to comfort her by saying Gesicht was thinking about her to the very end. While he lied to her by saying Gesicht never recovered his deleted memories, he did so in order to preserve the image she had of him. Regardless, Helena does pick up the fact that he was lying to her and isn't bothered by his decision as she trusted him enough to realize that he would have a good reason to do so.
- Although he almost kills Pluto in a fit of rage during their final fight, Atom eventually comes back to his senses and spares his life, helping his original personality, Sahad, regain control of his programming, resulting in his redemption.
- He dives into the volcano to stop Bora's anti-proton bomb from going off with full knowledge that his body could not handle the heat for much long, meaning he was willing to die to save humanity.
- After Sahad sacrifices himself to destroy Bora, Atom mourns for him, despite all the deaths he had caused as Pluto, all the while honoring all of his fallen comrades in the process.
- While Pluto is technically an Astro Boy story which was written with the supervision and blessing of Osamu Tezuka's family, it is set in a completely original and separate continuity, meaning he does not have to compete with the admirable standards of the rest of the franchise.
Trivia[]
- Atom, alongside Epsilon, are the only characters from Pluto to be Pure Good.
- Atom is currently the only version of Astro Boy to be Pure Good.
- Although we never actually see what was the favor Atom asked Brau prior to the final fight, with his immediate action suggesting that he had asked him to kill Dr. Roosevelt, this is never confirmed and the nature of his request is left ambiguous. Aditionally, Dr. Roosevelt himself is Pure Evil and was a dangerous force that needed to be destroyed due to his genocidal tendencies.
