Atreyu is the child hero of the 1984 fantasy film The Neverending Story. He is sent on a quest to save Fantasia from the Nothing by finding a cure for the Childlike Empress.
He was played by Noah Hathaway.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- He accepts the task to find a cure for the Empress and save Fantasia without fear, agreeing to leave his weapons behind.
- He searches all over Fantasia for a cure with his horse Artax, not giving up even though he has no success.
- He desperately tries to save Artax from the swamp, emotionally telling him that he loves him, and mourns Artax's death.
- He doesn't lose heart after Artax dies, managing to reach Morla and get the information he needs from her.
- He bravely faces the Great Stone Gateway, managing to make it through just in time.
- He keeps his composure when he sees his "true self" in the magic mirror.
- He consoles the Rock Biter over the loss of his friends, saying that it's his own fault for not finding a cure.
- He bravely confronts Gmork, and tries to understand his motives, and fights and kills him upon realizing he's a threat to Fantasia and can't be reasoned with.
- Despite thinking he failed in his mission, his quest allows Fantasia to get in touch with a human child, Bastian, which results in Fantasia being saved from the Nothing.
- He befriends Bastian in the sequel, and tries to help him when Bastian is corrupted by Xayide. Despite being temporarily killed by Bastian, Atreyu forgives him and tells Bastian that his mother would be proud of him for redeeming himself.
