Aya Asagiri is the central protagonist of the franchise, Magical Girl Site/Mahou Shoujo Site, and is the main protagonist of its 2018 anime adaption.
Asagiri is a shy and heavily introverted girl who was incessantly and brutally bullied at school, by Sarina Shizukume and her allies (Erika Kaijima, Shota Arai and Ai Kawano), and beaten and tortured by her adoptive and sadistic brother, Kaname Asagiri, at home. One day, she received a message from a mysterious website, the titular Magical Girl Site, and received a magical gun-shaped stick from an administrator, who chose her to be obtained magical superpowers and it would make her a Magical Girl. Following this, Asagiri joins forces with the other Magical Girls to save the world and humanity from Tempest, a catastrophic apocalypse orchestrated by the Magical Girls' administrators.
Aya Asagiri is voiced by Yūko Ōno in the anime adaption, who also voices Yuzu from Konohana Kitan, and voices Flayn and Sara from the Fire Emblem series (all in japanese dub).
What Makes Her Pure Good?[]
In general[]
- Unlike most of the Magical Girls, she never made usage of her magical stick nor did she become a Magical Girl for either pragmatic and self-serving reasons or to seek vengeance. Instead, she became one for the sake of saving the world and humanity out of genuine altruism, and her motives from becoming a Magical Girl eventually evolve into protecting her loved ones and friends and, ultimately, spreading happiness across those who suffered from tragedy.
- Despite Asagiri's blatant disregard for her own life due to her depression and being tormented throughout her livelihood, even going as far as constantly thinking about comitting suicide, she refuses to force such mentality onto those around her and retains an unnaturally kindhearted and soft-spoken disposition, as she is shown to tolerate her abusive brother's (Kaname Asagiri) abuse to protect him from their father and holds responsibility for other people's pain to not let them suffer through it.
- Even though Asagiri holds a huge self-doubt since she constantly blames herself for whatever she cannot control, even blaming herself rather than her bullies from being bullied, she does not hesitate to protect the ones and friends she loves and cares about the most, even if it means to almost sacrifice her own life.
- While she seems to only have a few comedic moments compared to the other Magical Girls (sans potentially Tsuyuno Yatsumura) and is taken a bit too serious by the narrative due to her depressive demeanor and tragic livelihood, she does not darken the mood at all, as her tragic life is very sympathetic and her interactions are played with genuinely positive energy thanks to her lighthearted and sweet nature, especially when it comes to her friendship with Nijimi.
- It is also very plausible that her dark moments are because of either her interactions with her abusive brother and her bullies (for example, Sarina and Erika), because of her tragic life affecting her or that she is aware of Sarina and her brother coming after Asagiri and her friends, and because of such moments coming from the dark nature of Magical Girl Site rather than from the characters themselves, including Asagiri.
Her actions[]
- While she did cause the death of Erika and Shota by using her gun-proportioned stick to shoot them, this was an accident as she did not know the effect of the stick. Furthermore, she only made usage of it for self-defense when the two were attempting to sexually assault her.
- When Sarina was about to inflict harm on her out of revenge for the death of Erika and Shota, Tsuyuno saved her by stopping time. Tsuyuno then wanted to kill Sarina, but Aya asked her not to, despite what Sarina did to her. This is supplemented in the anime, where Yatsumura chose to not kill her due to Aya requesting her not to.
- Later on, Aya told Tsuyuno the reason she and Sarina were opposing each other was because she never thanked her when Sarina would defend her from bullies back and due to her introverted and soft-spoken disposition, claiming that if she had thanked her, perhaps unfortunate circumstances like this would not happen.
- During her battle with Sarina (who strived for vengeance against Aya and Tsuyuno), Aya did her best to protect Tsuyuno, despite her own cowardice and fear.
- When Tsuyuno's apartment was about to collapse due to the battle, Aya made usage of her magical stick to teleport Sarina away, saving her life from getting crushed by the collapsing apartment.
- When she learns that Tsuyuno was about to die, Aya decided to take her to the beach with her friends to give her happiness.
- Although she did not tell her friends that Kaname had stolen Nijimi's stick and even killed someone with it, it was because she was afraid that her friends would have killed him. Kiyoharu (who read Aya's corresponding thoughts with her stick) understood her and decided to behave like herself without her fellow Magical Girls knowing. Furthermore, when her friends learned it, all of them understood Aya's decision.
- Aya, feeling remorseful for that decision, decided to give her blood to heal Kiyoharu in return.
- She saved her family from the administrator, even including Kaname and her father (despite their torment towards her).
- While she did take Kaname's life force so that whatever usage of a stick would kill him, given that Kaname is dangerous and even killed Nijimi, it was a wise decision to be sure he will no longer be a huge threat, and at the end, she gives his life back.
- When it is possible, she tries to save the person inside the administrator with her stick. This includes Tsuyuno.
- In order to prevent the king from annihilating the planet in the new timeline, she prevented all of the tragic events that occurred to all of the Magical Girls, which would lead them to obtain a magic stick from happening.
- In her most admirable actions, Asagiri created a new timeline where the suffering and tragedy within herself and the other Magical Girls has been eliminated and true happiness is found at last, where not only the tragedy and suffering within the other Magical Girls, including herself, have been cleansed and the events of the Magical Girl Site have never occurred (along with the family dynamics having been improved), but this has also led to his brother (Kaname) and Sarina greatly subverting their abusiveness since the former's father is no longer abusive and the latter no longer goes through a history of traumatic manipulation, the loss of her friends and being bullied.
- She convinced Ichi to assist her in reconstructing the Earth and to become its core.
