Barley Lightfoot is the deuteragonist of Onward. Unlike his young brother Ian, Barley was lucky that their father Wilden lived long enough to know him and he even kept memories of him in his head.
He is voiced by Chris Pratt, who also voices Emmet Brickowski in The Lego Movie film series and Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- Although he has many moments of mischief, such as getting jelly on Ian's shirt and getting a string loose out of it, he subverts it towards the end.
- After his father's death, he promised not to be afraid of anything anymore.
- During Ian's childhood, he spent good times with him, giving him several good memories.
- He likes the past because although the present is safer, in ancient times, there were many wonders, so he wanted to keep the past alive for future generations to learn about.
- He stopped the construction crew from tearing down an old fountain because he saw that by destroying it, people were destroying the past.
- He told Colt that because he is a centaur, he can use his own speed instead of a van (which he did in the end).
- He later tried to tell the Sprites that they can fly, and they found it out after the chase.
- Upon discovering that his father could be revived for a day, he tried to revive him on his own.
- When Ian couldn't keep control, Barley tried to help him finish the spell, and had Ian listened to him, he likely would have been able to finish the spell properly.
- Despite wanting to be magic himself, he did not show any jealousy towards Ian for his gift and instead helped him to master his sorcery.
- It was his idea that they should look for another Phoenix Gem, which allowed them to finish the spell to see their father.
- During the adventure, he acted as a mentor to Ian, teaching him how to use magic.
- Upon meeting Corey, he showed respect for her.
- During the conversation with Corey, Barley tried to calm Ian down, fearing he would irritate her.
- It can also be seen that this adventure led to Corey becoming a heroine and reminded her of her past adventurous self.
- As Ian uses the Levitation spell to stop the remains of Manticore's Tavern from falling on his father, Barley comes to save him before he lets go.
- Although they didn't get the map because it was burned to ashes during Corey's rampage, Barley did at least get a kid's menu as a clue, which allowed them to resume the quest.
- He intended to take the longer route, but they took the shortest because Ian said it would take less time. Ian later changed his mind and went for the longer one, which later proved to be the right one.
- He used his small size to get into the van and unlock it to escape the fairies.
- He helped teach Ian to drive while they were running away from the fairies.
- When Ian didn't trust the Trust Bridge spell (and the spell only works if the person has trust), he tied a rope to it in case it fails, and as soon as the first attempt failed, he said to have more confidence that he would get it.
- As soon as the rope wore off, he tried to lie to Ian that he was still holding on and tried to convince him not to look back, knowing he would fall if he found out. Then, when Ian insisted he needed the rope, Barley reassured him that he didn't and that he was good enough on his own.
- It's also worth noting that Barley started shedding tears once the rope came undone, showing how worried he was over losing Ian.
- When Colt showed up to force them back home, Barley showed him he needed to restore Wilden's second half and attempted to convince him to allow the two siblings to resume their quest.
- Despite loving his van, he was still willing to sacrifice it so the cops wouldn't stop them from finding the Phoenix Gem.
- While fleeing the Gelatinous Cube, Barley did a very risky thing by throwing himself into the spikes for Ian to later use to escape.
- Unlike Ian, who decided to give up just because they came back to town, Barley didn't give up and attempted to find out where the Phoenix Gem was hiding, successfully retrieving it from the fountain he saved from being destroyed earlier.
- As soon as Ian started to lose control of the Visitation spell, Barley helped him so the spell could be finished.
- When the dragon was about to attack them, Barley offered to hold the dragon off so Ian could get the chance to speak to their father.
- After saying goodbye, he told Ian that their father was proud of him and embraced his younger brother on their father's behalf.
- He is without a doubt one of Pixar's bravest heroes (if not the bravest), because that adventure was very dangerous, but that didn't stop him from finding the Phoenix Gem, as well as doing extremely risky things for others, especially Ian.
