NOTE: This page is only for the version of Benjamin in the 1954 animated film, as other versions of the character were not voted Pure Good.

Benjamin is the main protagonist of the 1954 animated film Animal Farm, based on the George Orwell book. He is a donkey who takes part in a farm's uprising against their cruel master Mr. Jones, and is dismayed when the selfish pig Napoleon seizes power for himself and becomes a tyrant. In contrast to his book counterpart, this version of Benjamin is much nicer and leads an uprising to overthrow Napoleon at the end.

He was voiced by the late Maurice Denham, who also voiced every other character in the same film.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

  • He's a loyal friend to Boxer the workhorse and always looks out for him.
  • He agrees with Old Major that all animals are equal and is upset by his death.
  • He supports the rebellion and helps drive away Mr. Jones.
  • Though he doesn't like humans due to their cruelty to animals, he only attacks them in self-defense and doesn't express any particular hatred of them.
  • He defends Snowball in battle, taking down two humans after Snowball is wounded.
  • Though he's skeptical of Snowball's plans at first, he comes to support his plan for a windmill to save work, and is visibly upset when Napoleon assassinates Snowball and seizes power.
  • He helps discover that the pigs are violating the Seven Commandments by sleeping in beds.
  • He's concerned at the toll Boxer's workload is taking on him, and becomes one of the hardest workers on the farm, staying out with Boxer long after dark in order to support him.
  • He defends Boxer when the humans launch another attack, and tends Boxer's wound after the battle.
  • He gets help for Boxer when a load falls on him, and comforts Boxer while he's hurt.
  • He discovers the pigs are selling Boxer to the glue factory and chases after the van, frantically warning Boxer about what's happening. He keeps chasing the van until he's exhausted, and is devastated at his friend's death.
  • He sees through Squealer's lies about Boxer and nearly starts an uprising, which is only quelled because the dogs frighten the animals into submission.
  • Upon realizing the pigs have become just like the humans, he leads a rebellion against them, calling on other farms for help, and they overthrow Napoleon and the pigs, saving not just Animal Farm but other farms from falling under their control.

Trivia[]

  • The original novel version of Benjamin doesn't qualify for lacking the single biggest Goodness Zone of rebelling against Napoleon.
