Bernard is the male protagonist of Disney's 23rd full-length animated feature film The Rescuers and its sequel The Rescuers Down Under.
He was voiced by the late Bob Newhart.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- He (and Bianca) rescued Penny from Madame Medusa. They traveled a long way to Devil's Bayou to rescue her.
- He (and Bianca) rescued Cody from Percival C. McLeach. They traveled a long way to Australia to rescue him. In addition, they indirectly saved Marahute from McLeach.
- He saved Bianca when she fell overboard.
- He (and Bianca) helped Penny find the Devil's Eye, risking their lives in the process.
- He (and Bianca) used a lasso to make Medusa trip in order to help Penny escape.
- He (and Bianca) tried to warn Cody of the danger he still was in.
- He replaced Marahute's eggs with rocks that look like the eggs to prevent Joanna from eating them.
- He controlled a razorback to set off and find the Bushwacker to help his friends.
- He saved Cody from McLeach and the crocodiles despite the fact that he is a coward. He removed the keys to stop McLeach from controlling the crane Cody was tied to. He then threw the keys to Jake and Bianca. He stopped McLeach from cutting the rope Cody was tied up with by tricking Joanna into climbing up onto the latter. At first, McLeach is able to maintain his balance, but Bernard uses one finger to push them both into the river. This caused the crocodiles to turn their attention to them. After the rope Cody was tied up with snaps and Cody falls into the river, Bernard goes after him, and holds him with the rope using a branch for long enough before Jake and Bianca free Marahute to help them.
- He (and Bianca) forgave Jake, as shown when he befriended him.

- Bernard is one of the three The Rescuers heroes to be Pure Good, the other two being Bianca and Cody.
