“ | In my book, experience outranks everything. | „ |
~ Rex's catchphrase, also his most famous quote. |
“ | I used to believe that being a good soldier meant doing everything they told you; that's how they engineered us. But we're not droids. We're not programmed. You have to learn to make your own decisions. | „ |
~ Rex on how the clones were used in the war. |
Clone Captain CT-7567 (nicknamed "Rex") is a major character in the epic space opera franchise Star Wars.
He is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, who also voiced Echo and Fives in the same series.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
Star Wars: The Clone Wars[]
- He fought in the Clone Wars and is very loyal to both his friends and his men, constantly looking out for them and ensuring their safety.
- Though he did kill people during the Clone Wars, it is part of the rules of war, and he never kills unless absolutely necessary, placing a value on life.
- He outed Slick as a traitor to the Republic, preventing him from causing anymore trouble.
- When Ventress Force-Chokes him, demanding to know where Skywalker is, Rex refuses to talk even though his life was on the line.
- He didn't snitch on Cut Lawquane despite him being a deserter, letting him stay with his wife and children.
- He kept the relationship between Anakin and Padmé Amidala a secret from the Jedi Council out of loyalty to his general.
- In the Umbara arc, Rex attempted to stand up to Krell's orders when they're forced to retreat and states his duty to protect his men, doing his best to reason with General Krell and ensure the lives of his men are protected.
- Rex tries to take the blame for Fives and Jesse's insubordination, then defied Krell when he wanted them executed.
- He warned the 501st and 212th legions about them shooting at each other before all of the troopers got killed.
- He led a coup to arrest Krell for treason against the Republic, and when Dogma retaliates against them and prepares to fire due to believing them all to be traitors, Rex reasons with him and exclaims that they're not droids, and they have to learn to make their own decisions, which convinces Dogma to drop his weapon.
- Even when forced to execute Krell to prevent him from leaking intelligence and to protect the safety of his men and the Republic, Rex still hesitated, which is remarkable considering how many of his men were killed by him.
- Despite Dogma being taken into custody following Krell's death, Rex quietly nodded at him as a sign of gratitude and respect for finally overcoming his blind loyalty to Krell and executing the traitorous general.
- After the Republic conquered Umbara, Rex questions what the point of this attack was and the point of the war in general, becoming more considerate of the lives lost in the conflict.
- When Ahsoka was found guilty of bombing a Jedi Temple and killing many clone troopers, Rex refused to believe she was guilty of those crimes and worked alongside Anakin to prove her innocence.
- When Fives discovered the truth about Order 66, but was framed by Palpatine into thinking he attempted to kill the Chancellor, Rex attempted to peacefully reason with Fives, and when he was fatally shot, he held Fives in his arms as he died and comforted him, honoring his death by recording exactly what Fives had claimed.
- His recording, albeit classified and subjected to obscurity by the Kaminoans, would later help Ahsoka uncover the inhibitor chip inside Rex's head that forced him to attack her during Order 66, allowing her to remove it to save his life.
- He only killed Keeper Agruss as it was the only way to save the latter's slaves he was about to kill and Obi-Wan could not do it due to the codes of the Jedi.
- Alongside Anakin, Cody, and Clone Force 99, aka the Bad Batch, he led a rescue mission for Echo.
- He only punched Crosshair and threatened to make Wrecker smaller because they didn't like regs.
- Unlike the other clones who turned on the Jedi during Order 66, Rex showed some restraint towards Ahsoka before attacking her.
- He showed extreme anguish over being forced to kill his own men when they were under the control of their programming and Order 66.
- Through a loophole, he attempted to reason with Jesse and his men by explaining to them that Ahsoka was no longer a Jedi in an effort to spare her from Order 66, which proved futile when Jesse demoted him from Commander back down to Captain and ordered for his execution as well.
- Following the crash of their Venator-class cruiser, the Tribunal, he and Ahsoka made a memorial for Jesse and all the other clones that died in the crash, respectfully laid them to rest, and silently mourned them.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch[]
- After finding them through Trace and Rafa Martez, he helped the Bad Batch remove their Inhibitor Chips.
- Even though Echo’s chip is disabled by the Separatists, this is necessary in case it gets enabled again like Wrecker’s.
- He stopped a brainwashed Wrecker from executing Omega.
- He tasked Clone Force 99 to save Gregor on Daro while he likely goes on his own missions to rescue clones.
- He saved Senator Riyo Chuchi's life when she was being hunted by a clone assassin known as Clone X while helping her to expose Vice Admiral Rampart for the destruction of Tipoca City on Kamino.
- He stunned Clone X instead of killing him to divulge information from him about Rampart's crimes, and was surprised to learn the assassin was also a fellow clone, who then chose to commit suicide before Rex and Chuchi could gather information.
- Along with Chuchi and Echo, he established an underground network that rescues other clone troopers from the Empire's custody, successfully freeing Captain Howzer and two of his men when they were being transferred from an Imperial prison on Balmorra to Mount Tantiss, a secret facility operated by the Imperial Science Division on the planet Weyland.
- Unlike Captain Howzer, he did not react with any hostility towards Crosshair after knowing he rejoined his former squad. Although he was never aware of any of the heinous things he did, this doesn’t nullify this action.
- He talks Wolffe out of capturing Omega. Whether or not this happened immediately or gradually, he redeemed Wolffe because he is shown with him and Gregor on Seelos.
- After Clone Force 99 freed all of the clones on Mount Tantiss, defeated Dr. Royce Hemlock’s forces and killed him, he works with Hunter to relocate the Force-sensitive children.
Star Wars Rebels[]
- When he first met the Ghost crew and their leader Kanan Jarrus, a survivor of Order 66, Rex ordered Wolffe and Gregor not to attack them, despite Kanan's initial mistrust of clones due to the fact his master, Depa Billaba, was betrayed and gunned down by one of them.
- He overcame his hatred for droids by working together with Kalani, a military droid that once worked for the Separatists.
- He talked Saw Gerrera into not destroying the queen Geonosian egg guarded by Klik-Klak, the last surviving Geonosian whose species was enslaved and almost entirely exterminated by the Empire.
- He helps stop Thrawn from destroying Lothal by raising the planetary shields, subsequently allowing Ezra to liberate his Homeworld.
- He continues to help Hera and the other rebels fight back against the Empire until the Battle of Endor.
Trivia[]
- He is one of three clone troopers in Star Wars to be Pure Good, alongside Fives and Echo. Interestingly enough, all of them are from the same unit, the 501st Legion.
- Commander Rex's admirable standard is only within confounds of T-Canon involving G-Canon and the Disney continuity, due to numerous contradictions Star Wars The Clone Wars has with it, plus he originates from T-Canon continuity.
