Carl Fredricksen, also known as Mr. Fredricksen, is the main protagonist of Disney/Pixar's Up franchise.
He is an elderly man who became grumpy and excluded after his wife's death, feeling guilty for not being able to live with her all the adventures they planned to live. After he travels to Paradise Falls, where they intended to go, in a flying house suspended with balloons, accidentally bringing a kid with himself, he would live an adventure, and realize the life with his wife wasn't wasted as he thought.
He was voiced by the late Ed Asner, and by Jeremy Leary as a kid.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
Up[]
- At first, he acts like a jerk for most of the story, especially towards Russell. But then after learning about Russell's personal life when they had a good talk that one heavy rainy night, he manages to shed his negative corrupting traits by the end of the movie after positively having finally getting over his own loss of his wife by accepting her final message and keeping in touch with her as a saved soul despite her tragic death that pessimistically sadden him.
- He loved his wife Ellie deeply and was devastated by her death. His main motivation throughout the film consists of him traveling to Paradise Falls with their house as a means of accomplishing their childhood dream.
- He was horrified upon realizing he'd unintentionally injured a construction worker during an argument while he was being overly defensive for his mailbox.
- He attempts to protect Russell from Kevin before learning she wasn't malicious and became a friend along the way.
- After looking at the memories of him spending time with Ellie over the years that he made a promise with her, she moves her house to Paradise Falls and sees the letter that said "thanks for the adventure now go have a new one" that encouraged him to move on with his life, he decides to let go of the past, so he'll have his future.
- He managed to rescue Russell, but he didn't want to put or join him this mission because he doesn't want out Russell in danger during the mission, he wanted him to be safe, so he put him in his house while he and Dug went back to find Kevin inside of Muntz's airship.
- Sacrificed his house to save Russell, Kevin, and Dug from Muntz.
- When Russell apologizes to Carl about his house, he says, "it's just a house" and he finally moves on from it since he'll just always keep Ellie in his heart instead of just the house. Unknown to him however, the house manages to successfully land back on the cliff of Paradise Falls, successfully fulfills Ellie's dream wish.
- He and Russell managed to help Kevin reunite her babies into the wild.
- He manages to be there for Russell at his Wilderness Explorer's Graduation and rewards him with Ellie's grape soda cap.
- In the ending credits, he spends time with Russell and treats him as the son that he never had, taking him place to place and having new adventures in the Shady Oaks Retirement Village like Father and Son, taking Russell in fishing on lake, to Zoo where he works and camping so he is telling Russell's friends scare story on campfire.
Dug Days[]
- He became Dug's good dog owner and aswell his best friend, as gives him treats and shows more love and attention to him, he even never loses his temper and unleashes his jerkishness with him at all throughout the series at all.
- He builds a dog door for Dug as a little entrance for the house.
- After Dug accidentally destroys his house (due to the loud fireworks have scared him) while they are both trying to have an enjoyable moment watching them from the backyard, Carl helpfully gives him earmuffs to block the noise out instead of irritably yelling him.
Carl's Date[]
- It's revealed that he had helped reform all of Muntz's dogs and found them new homes where they would be happy with Alpha (now Beta) stating how much he loves his new home to Dug over the phone.
- Though Carl showed reluctance over going out with Ms. Meyer and even regretted saying yes it after he hung up the phone, it wasn't really for any jerkish reason, since he just felt nervous about it, especially given the fact that his wife, Ellie passed. Plus, Carl later accepts it as he remembers Ellie's last wish for him to start a new adventure.
Trivia[]
- Originally, Carl was "Near Pure Good" as he allowed Kevin to be captured by Muntz, and later lashed out at Russell and called Dug a "bad dog". However fortunately after he reads Ellie's final message that comforts him and before the film's climax, it was decided that he made up for his actions heroically; He sacrificing his house to rescue Kevin but fortunately the house indirectly landed back to Paradise Falls thus successfully fulfils Ellie's wish, attending Russell's Senior Explorer ceremony during his father's absence, and purely subverting his jerkish attitude towards Dug until the events of Dug Days. Thus subsequently approved as "Pure Good" because Dug Days happened.
