“ | More low-income people are killed during the Purge then anyone else. The money generated from the Purge lines the pockets of the NRA and insurance companies. Any government system that relies on violence to answer its problems must be rebooted. It is time to call upon the better angels of our nature. | „ |
~ Charlie, expressing her views on the Purge and her desire to end it. |
Charlie Roan is the deuteragonist of The Purge: Election Year. She is a senator for the U.S. government that disagrees with the idea of the Purge and wants it abolished, running a campaign against it so that when she became elected as the next president of the United States, she would be able to finally end it, which marked her for death on Purge night by the NFFA. Despite the many near death experiences the characters run into, Charlie ultimately survives the night and wins the election against rival Edwidge Owens, leading to the end of the Purge for 8 years up until the events of The Forever Purge and after that, forever.
She was portrayed by Elizabeth Mitchell.
What Makes Her Pure Good?[]
- After having her family murdered in front of her by a Purger 18 years before the events of Election Year, she decided to dedicate her life towards becoming a successful politician so that she would be able to eventually become president of the United States and ultimately bring an end to the Purge.
- She risks her life going up against the NFFA in a presidential campaign against Edwidge Owens in order to complete her goal, being willing to go as far as to not stay in a safe-house on Purge Night so that she will not lose any voters, opting to stay at her home despite this being significantly more dangerous.
- She helps Leo fight off a group of Purgers when they are attacked before the two of them are overpowered by their sheer numbers.
- She takes Marcos's advice of getting Florida on her side during the election, which would later prove to be very valuable.
- She gets Leo first-aid after he is shot at by a sniper despite Leo's stubbornness about not needing it.
- She prepares to help Joe and Marcos defend the shop from Purgers attempting to break it, with it not being necessary due to their friend Laney Rucker arriving and killing all the Purgers at the front entrance.
- After arriving at Dante Bishop's base, she finds out about his plan to kill Owens in order to assure she wins the election and she attempts to convince him to not go through with it as she believes she can win without resorting to murder and because she believes it will turn Owens into a martyr and impact her chances of making a positive change to America.
- When Dante attempts to go through with his assassination of Owens after his men capture him, she successfully convinces Dante to not go through with it on the condition that she better win the election.
- Upon seeing Owens had kidnapped a group of people he intended to use for sacrificial purposes, she is disgusted with him and proclaims she will beat the shit out of him on election day in anger.
- She then helps the rest of the group free the hostages while they are busy with other goals.
- After surviving the night, it is revealed that Charlie has won the election against Owens and that her first goal as president will be making an executive decision towards ending the Purge, managing to end it for 8 years and after the events of The Forever Purge, forever after the NFFA brought it back and caused America to become destabilized, with the other governments being fed up of the NFFA and stripping them of their power, subsequently re-installing Roan's policy to end the Purge indefinitely this time and working with the Anti-NFFA Resistance, making Roan responsible for saving millions of lives, giving everyone closure from their bad experiences with the Purge and preventing the NFFA's genocidal goals towards the homeless and lower class people.
- Unlike several other heroes in the series, Roan lacks any corrupting qualities such as lethality and being anti-heroic, actively being against killing regardless if it is righteous or not, treating everyone respectfully and managing to bring out the best in others by convincing Dante to not go through with the assassination and Joe sacrificing himself for her so that she could ultimately bring an end to the Purge.
