“ | Picture a wave in the ocean. You can see it, measure it, the height, the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through. It's there, you can see it, it's wave. And then it crashes on the shore and it's gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be for a little while. | „ |
~ Chidi discussing existentialism with Eleanor |
Chidi Anagonye was one of the two deuteragonists (along with Michael) of The Good Place. During his time alive, he was a moral philosophy professor with a crippling indecisiveness that made others miserable, eventually leading to his own death. In the afterlife, he would be paired up with the death row lawyer, Eleanor Shellstrop, as soulmates. However, Eleanor reveals to Chidi that she was actually selfish con salesperson who sold fake medicine to the sick and the elderly. This forces Chidi to hide Eleanor's secret and teach her to become a better person.
He was portrayed by William Jackson Harper.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- Though he initially rejected Eleanor Shellstrop's pleas for help keeping her secret from Michael to not be damned for eternity, because of his belief that Eleanor is too selfish to improve her ways, Chidi Anagonye eventually helps teaching Eleanor to be a good person.
- His lessons to Eleanor turn out to be a success as Eleanor develops remorse for the inhabitants of the Good Place as her presence is causing chaos sequences.
- When Eleanor finally reveals her secret to Michael and is about to be taken to the Bad Place, Chidi stops Michael and convinces him to let Eleanor stay because she has improved as a person.
- During the feud between Eleanor and "real" Eleanor, Chidi aids in defending Eleanor on her behalf.
- In all 802 reboots of neighborhood, he always helped Eleanor learn to be a better person when he was asked to by Eleanor.
- Agrees to aid Michael in tricking a strike into believing that they are successful and are torturing the humans efficiently.
- Teaches Michael ethics, which would end up reforming Michael and turning him into a good person and later, a hero.
- In the alternate timeline where the four humans survived, he starts up a joint-study thesis to study near-death experiences and their effects on humans, which would involve Eleanor and the two other humans: Tahani Al-Jamil and Jason Mendoza. He would also teach them ethics during the study.
- When Eleanor has a mental breakdown because he disbands the joint-study, he comforts her and agrees for them to meet up annually.
- Breaks up with Simone so she wouldn't learn about the afterlife and be doomed to damnation.
- Stops Eleanor from having an identity crisis while in Janet's void and becomes engaged with her.
- Proposes doing a experiment to Gen on the ability for humans to improve in a similar fashion to Michael's experiment after Michael finds out that no human has gone to the Good Place in over 500 years because life has gotten very complicated.
- Erases his memories of Simone, which would also mean erasing all memories following his death, in order to not threaten the experiment through not being able to teach Simone ethics without his feelings getting in the way.
- Unknowingly becomes a subject for the experiment after one of the "subjects" is discovered to be a demon. He would improve himself during the experiment and contribute to Gen making the rightful ruling that the afterlife system is screwed up.
- After getting all his memories back, devises a new afterlife system and proposes it to Gen and Shawn, which they would ultimately accept, saving the entire human race from damnation.
- Eons later when he is ready to end his existence, stays with Eleanor even if it meant being miserable, in order to make her happy.
- Eleanor would later realize she was being selfish, remembering Chidi's lesson on contractualism, and allow him to end his existence.
- Of the four humans, he was the only human to start out as genuinely good, only being damned for the well-intended flaw of being massively indecisive because of his belief that every question has one answer.
- He would learn throughout The Good Place to be rid of his indecisiveness and any of his other corrupting qualities, only being hindered by constantly having his memories wiped. After he obtained all his memories back, he had no indecisiveness.
