What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- He's an honorable soldier who cares about protecting his men.
- He tries to refuse the order to attack the Ant Hill which he knows will be a suicide mission, only relenting because he doesn't want to be taken away from his men.
- He repeatedly tries to take the Ant Hill and rally his men, leading them in the front and trying to advance despite the shells exploding around him.
- He defends his men when General Mireau scapegoats them, insisting they weren't cowards, and resists Mireau's demands to court-martial a hundred of them, and is able to get the number reduced to just three. He also insists that he be allowed to defend them at the trial.
- He does an admirable job in defending his men and points out holes in the prosecution's case, noting the court-martial is corrupt and won't allow the men to properly defend themselves.
- Upon learning Mireau ordered his own troops to be fired upon, he goes to General Broulard and tries to use this fact to halt the executions.
- He succeeds in exposing Mireau's corruption and getting him dismissed, then righteously tells off Broulard for offering him Mireau's job when he allowed the wrongful executions to go forward.
