Cotton is the real hero. I wish I could know him more deeply. People like Scott Riley are fading away. People like Cotton Weary are here to stay
~ Sidney eulogize Cotton

Cotton Weary is a major character in Friends I Don't Have franchise, serving as an unseen supporting false antagonist in The Wake and as the deuteragonist in University Of lies. He was Maureen Prescott's close male friend, who was the main suspect in her murder. He sat in prison for a whole year before it was revealed that Tatum Riley and Stu Macher framed him. He was released following Tatum and Stu's death, and later tried to atone the sin he never committed both for himself and to make peace with Maureen's legacy, including her daughter Sidney.

He was portrayed by Brian Thomas Smith.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

  • Unlike the canon Cotton, this version never cared about the Diane Sawyer's interview. All he wanted was to mend the fences with Sidney, who mistook him for her mother's murderer and was partly guilty at him being imprisoned, out of sheer kindness. It's unknown if he held any animosity towards Neil for cheating on Maureen, but his forgiving nature makes it clear that at the very least he would feel no satisfaction to see Neil's dead body even if he did.
  • His friendship with Maureen was real and unconditional. He never wanted from her anything specific and hugged her in a strictly friendly way without any secret intention.
  • While he did want to kill Scott Riley as part of avenging Maureen, he wanted to do so less for his own sake and more for fixing the situation.
  • Took an active part at defeating Scott. He could've run away at any given second, but he chose to stick with Sidney even when he was mortally wounded, including removing Scott's heavy body off her.
  • Took the machete meant for Sidney. In his death, he inspired Sidney to make sure that he would never be forgotten and gave her the strengths to avoid her agoraphobic phase she had in the canon Scream 3, which means his sacrifice helped her keeping her faith in mankind.

Trivia[]

  • Cotton is the first Pure Good in Friends I Don't Have franchise who falls under adaptational heroism, followed by Roman Bridger. He's also the first Pure Good in the main universe.
  • His picture is taken from IMDB.
