The things I do for love.
~ Courage's catchphrase.

Courage is the titular main protagonist of Cartoon Network's animated TV series of the same name. He is the pet dog to Muriel Bagge and Eustace Bagge. He is shown to always to go out of his way to save Muriel whenever she is in danger.

He was voiced by Marty Grabstein.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

  • He is shown to protect Muriel in every episode (barring the few episodes that don't involve supernatural phenomena), being far more concerned for her safety than his own.
  • He is willing to go out of his way to protect Eustace as well, despite the latter's hatred of Courage and habit of routinely scaring, kicking, and strangling Courage.
  • He saved multiple people in the town of Nowhere multiple times like saving multiple people from a bombing of a submarine in "Katz Under the Sea".
  • He is shown to stick up for others who get bullied. The most notable example was in the episode "The Hunchback of Nowhere", where he supported the Hunchback who was getting bullied by Eustace.
  • Compared to his many fears and anxiety, Courage is the bravest character in the series, as he has to get over his fears to the biggest extent.
  • In "Magic Tree of Nowhere", he plants seeds Eustace throw out, which grew a tree that has the ability to grant any wish or desire - a new oven for Muriel, a real construction vehicle for Courage, and even showing them both a movie, Eustace became jealous as he wanted to cut it down, Courage does all he could to protect the tree. When Eustace finally chopped it, Courage runs up to the top of a boulder and screams in anguish. He comes back to the fallen tree and starts crying, but the tree comes back to life one last time to tell him that the actual cure for Muriel is composed of the flowers from its branches mixed with pure hornets honey. With those final words, the tree dies. After salvaging the flowers and honey, Courage gets the cure to Muriel, whose head returns to normal. Sometime later, a flower is shown to be growing from the stump of the old tree, revealing that the tree will return someday in the future, while Muriel pats Courage on the head. As for Eustace, as Punishment for cutting down the tree in jealously and spite, he got his head engorged like he wish on Muriel earlier.
  • With the exception of Katz, Courage is always willing to forgive his enemies as soon as he does not deem them as threatening anymore. The most known example was in the episode "The Mask", where he held no grudge for Kitty's physical violence toward him, as he realized what her friend had been through. Even in the brief moment where he did judge her harshly, he was more afraid for Muriel's well-being than for his own.
  • In the Straight Outta Nowhere: Scooby-Doo! Meets Courage The Cowardly Dog movie, Courage becomes very brave and fights Katz (only inside of the giant cicada) and he was never scared of him, as he did his best to defeat the Giant Cicada especially he wanted to protect Scooby-Doo and his friends.
  • While he appears to be a jerk to some characters, he mistakenly thought the characters were the antagonists/villains and even so he did try to help them and/or show remorse for it while he only gets mad at villains or people who endangers his owners and even so he is always willing to forgive his enemies.

Trivia[]

  • Courage appears to be the only Pure Good Character of the series.
