Dai, born as Dino, is the titular main protagonist of the manga/anime series Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai.
He is a boy from Dermline Island who aspires to be a hero and Brass's adoptive grandson. After meeting the hero Avan and his sidekick Popp, he and Popp are mentored by him until the Dark Lord Hadlar's return. After Avan apparently sacrifices himself to save them, Dai and Popp go on a journey to stop Hadlar and his master, the Dark King Vearn. It is later revealed that he is the long-lost son of the Dragon Knight Baran.
In Japanese, he was voiced by the late Toshiko Fujita in the 1991 anime and Atsumi Tanezaki in the 2020 anime. In English, he was voiced by Sabrina Pitre in the 2020 anime.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- He is very kind, friendly and cheerful who always cherished everything he has and cared for and protective to his friends as well.
- Despite his status as a Hero, he only used it to protect those whom he cared for and never be motivated by fame and glory just like how Nova used to have.
- He was willing to show forgiveness and compassion to few of his enemies like Hadlar, Crocodine, Hyunckel, Baran, Zamza, Hym, and even the group of fake heroes, no matter how much they've caused trouble for him and his friends. The only exception is the Dark King Vearn and it's justified due to how much atrocities he has caused and views him as a dangerous and powerful threat that needs to be stopped.
- Due to being raised in Dermline Island by his adopted grandfather Brass, he always loved to play and hanging out with other monsters who lived here, viewing them as his friends.
- He is responsible for Gome to become a living being throughout the series, as he was the one who found a single drop of Tears of God and wished for having a friend like him, which is how Gome was born. Since then, they're always close to each other and Gome never leave by his side.
- Despite Brass harshly scolding and hitting him in the head for his desire of becoming a Hero, he never showed his anger nor argued with him in return because how much he loved him for raising him throughout his whole life.
- When he first met the group of fake heroes, he gave them a friendly tour at the Dermline Island and introducing the monsters living there to them as well. After he brought Gome to them, he was horrified of seeing them attacking the monsters and tried to stop them from doing it but to no avail.
- With the help of Brass and the other monsters, he managed to save Gome from the group of fake heroes and prevents him from being sold to the King of Romos, which later changed his entire life as he was chosen as a Hero who is destined to save the world from the Dark Army and also earn him the Crown of Champions.
- Despite annoyed Brass and whiningly demanded to give the Crown of Champions back to him, he later gets over with it by the next three months.
- He initially disliked Princess Leona for underestimating teased him for his short stature and lacks any magic skills he has, but they later grow to appreciative and understanding towards each other, which they became friends after he saved her from Varon and Temjin and defeated them.
- Saving Leona from being attacked by an Evil Scorpion, but failed to stops her from being poisoned.
- Seeing that Leona is succumbed to the poison from an Evil Scorpion, this led Dai to awakened his Dragon Knight powers for the first time and used it to defeat Varon and Temjin by destroying the Killing Machine, preventing them from killing Leona and conquering the Papnica Kingdom.
- After the ritual is finished, he bids farewell to Leona when she was going to return back to Papnica Kingdom.
- When all monsters from Dermline Island were corrupted by dark magic due to Hadlar's influence, he refused to leave his adopted grandfather Brass out of concern for his well-being.
- When Avan and his student Popp arrived at the Dermline Island, he agreed to train under the former Hero so he could be prepared to face the Dark Lord Hadlar.
- Went to save Avan from being killed by Hadlar by using the Papnican Knife against the Dark Lord, which resulted of wounding his finger.
- Following Avan's "sacrifice" and Hadlar's survival from his Megante, he managed to avenge his mentor by finishing Hadlar with newly-developed Avan Strash, driving him away from Dermline Island as result.
- While they got lost in the Dark Forest, they saved a little girl from Nayla Village named Mina from the monsters.
- Despite Popp cowardly ran away leaving him behind to deal with Crocodine, he only express his sadness and disappointment instead of anger and resentment towards him as he sadly asking him why did he do it.
- Though he asked the Nayla Village head not to tell Maam and her mother about the "disappearance" of Avan, it's because he doesn't want her to become depressed and traumatized of hearing the news, meaning that he would do anything to protect Maam's feelings no matter what.
- Though he does teasing Popp for having feelings towards Maam, it is more out of playfulness rather than genuine mischief. Despite this, it's likely that he is supportive of their relationships at all.
- When Crocodine went to attack the Romos Kingdom, he isn't hesitant to rush off to the castle and save the king from the Beast King of the Dark Army.
- When Crocodine summoned the brainwashed Brass against Dai, he refused to hurt him out of fear since he's the one who's been raised him since the very beginning and warned Maam, Popp and the others not to hurt him.
- After Popp managed to freeing Brass from Zaboera's brainwashing, he managed to fight back against Crocodine and defeated him with Avan Strash, thus saving the Romos Kingdom from the Beast King once and for all. As result, he, Popp and Maam were hailed as heroes.
- After Hyunckel pretend to rescue him and his friends when they first arrived at Papnica Kingdom, he asked the Dark Swordsman if he could join with them for his help since both of them were Avan's students, but only for him to reject out of contempt towards his former master.
- When Maam is captured by Hyunckel and is taken to the Underground Palace, he and Popp devised their plan to defeat Hyunckel and save Maam by casting Zapple spell at him.
- He finally defeated Hyunckel by unleash Lightning Strash on him, thus leading him to change his ways as result. Before that, Maam was the one who made Hyunckel redeemed himself and have a change of heart by reveal the truth about his adopted father's death and later forgiving him once he was defeated.
- He, Popp and Maam were clearly horrified of seeing Hyunckel sacrificed himself of getting burned in the lava after Flazzard destroyed the Colosseum by unleashing it on them.
- While he did accidentally ignite the signal flares after he unleashed the Fire Earth Slash to destroy the rubble that blocks the entrance to the underground which almost killed himself and his friends, it's because he want him and his friends to get inside the underground to activate the signal flares and didn't knew there was a gunpowder in there, before he felt remorseful over his mistakes. However, it did get Lady Amy's attention and she took them all to see Princess Leona at the Valge Island.
- When Flazzard is attacking Leona, Apollo, Marin and the others at the Valge Tower, he jumps off to save them all from being killed by the Blizzblaze General.
- When Flazzard froze Princess Leona in an ice to prevent the heroes from escape, he tried to save her without hesitate before Mamm knocked him out for them to escape.
- Managed to convinced Matoriv to help him and his friends fight against the Dark Army to save the world from them, which led him to agree to help them and later becoming Popp's mentor, which led him to become one of the skilled Mages.
- He, Gome and Baduck went to destroy the Dark Flame Spire to deactivate Flazzard's Blizzblaze Curse Field to save Princess Leona from him before they were forced to fight against Mystvearn and Zaboera.
- After Hyunckel and Crocodine appears to save and help them, he and his friends went off to Valge Tower to save Princess Leona and defeat Flazzard. He initially thought of helping Hyunckel fought against Hadlar until Maam reminded him and Popp that their first priority is to save Leona from Flazzard.
- Through Hyunckel's guidance, he finally managed to defeat Flazzard by destroying his inner core and later Mystvearn's Ultimate Armour from the Shadow Legion, which allowed him and his friends to get back to Valge Tower to save Leona from being frozen.
- To freeing Leona from being frozen to death, he charged one of Maam's bullets with Sizzle so she could use it to unfreeze Princess Leona, which effectively saving her life as result.
- While Popp went to bring Maam to the Romos Kingdom, he and Gome expressed their disappointment at Princess Leona for mischievously waiting for Popp to be rejected by Maam.
- Went out to save Bengarna Kingdom from being attacked by Baran's dragons, which he later realized that he fell for Killvearn's trap to test out his power and strength to determine whether he's the Dragon Knight to Baran.
- While confronting Baran for the first time in the Dragon Temple, he immediately rejects his father's offer to join with him and destroy humanity together, said that he would rather die or join the people who murdered his idol hero master Avan.
- Though he lost his memories after Baran released a resonance at him, he later regained them all back after witnessing Popp's sacrifice by casting Megante on Baran and apologized to him for not believing him and his friends.
- Though he angrily did disown and denounced Baran as his father, this is clearly justified as he removed his memories by releasing resonance at him and all of the atrocities he committed as well. But when Baran release his resonance on him and tried to remove the rest of his memories, he later resists by moving his Crest onto his fist.
- When to defeat Baran by using the Dark Armour Blade to unleash Avan Strash against him, preventing him from destroying the Teran Kingdom and led him to surrender and giving some of his blood on Popp to revive him.
- Defeat Hadlar and Zaboera to prevent them from obliterating him and his friends, including Popp and Matoriv, while they're asleep.
- When Maam refused to help get the Sword of Champions for him and Popp so he could kill Baran, he assured her that he only used it to defeat Baran and prove him wrong about humanity.
- When Zamza captured eight of the best fighters inside his Bioprison and attacked the King of Romos, he went out to save them all from Zamza by defeating him.
- He and his friends showing their sympathy towards Zamza as he disintegrates away into dusts, as they understand how much he wanted his father's love despite knowing how cunning and manipulative Zaboera is.
- During the heroes' first encounter with Lon Beruk, he managed to convinced Lon Beruk to create his sword made of Orichalcum for him after he was impressed of how he managed to break Baran's Demon Dragon Blade.
- When he and Popp got the Crown of Championships from the Dermline Island, he asked the King of Romos if he could use it for his weapon, even though the King said it's already his to have.
- After finished waiting for Lon Beruk to create a sword for him, he returns back to Papnica Kingdom to save his friends from being annihilated by Mystvearn and used his sword to defeat him.
- Went to stop the Sovereign Rock Castle from destroying the Papnica Grand Chapel by destroying it with his own sword, thus saving Leona and the others where they held the world summit in here.
