I may not have what it takes to last for long, but that's okay. 'Cause at least I can say that when the world goes to sh*t, I didn't let it take me down with it.
~ Dale to the group, telling them that he wouldn't see them execute Randall.

Dale Horvath is a major character in the AMC TV Series The Walking Dead, serving as a major character in Seasons 1 and 2. He serves as one of the group's moral compass, who took care of Amy and Andrea during the outbreak and was the one to guard the weapons and supplies of the group, as well as serving as a watch guard of the group most of the time.

He was portrayed by Jeffrey DeMunn.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

  • While his words to Andrea while comforting her over Amy's death imply that he became cynical after his wife's death, by the time of the show, Dale has lost of his cynicism and is nice to everyone.
  • Before the events of the show, he rescued Amy and Andrea when the city of Atlanta was overrun.
  • He watched over the group's camp through the RV to watch out for walkers or any threats that may come to the group.
  • Despite being initially reluctant, Dale decided to give Rick his tools so he could get the weapons he left behind in Atlanta after Rick told him that one of them would be for him.
    • This is the only "selfish" moment Dale has in the show, but it was because he didn't want to have his tools go to complete waste that wouldn't benefit him and the group, and he never acts in this way again after this, thinking of other people's needs over his own.
  • He tries to convince Jim to stop digging holes because he was worried about his mental health.
  • He tries to give Amy a birthday gift and even when he was unable to get anything for her, Dale still tried to find one.
  • When the group's camp got attacked by walkers, Dale helped in protecting the group's members.
  • After Amy's death, he comforted Andrea over it.
  • He was shocked when he saw Shane trying to kill Rick.
  • He comforts Jim when he decided to die in the woods and said his goodbies to him.
  • He was able to convince Andrea to not stay in the CDC when it was about to explode, and protects her when it blew up.
  • He saved Andrea from a walker by giving her a screwdriver so she could kill it.
  • He decided to lie about the van being broken after Sophia went missing, because he wanted to stop the group from arguing and so they could be able to find Sophia.
  • He told Glenn to bring T-Dog to the Greene Farm to take care of T-Dog after he got his arm severely injured and was starting to have blood poisoning and hallucinations.
  • He tried to make sure Andrea was fine because of her suicide attempt at CDC.
  • He saved T-Dog's life by stopping him from drinking infected water.
  • Alongside the other members of the group, Dale helped in saving Glenn from a walker.
  • He comforted Andrea after she accidentaly shot Daryl.
  • He put his life at risk for the group by trying to hide the guns from Shane so he won't kill every walker at the barn, and even told him that he would have to kill him to get the guns, as if Shane killed all the walkers in the barn, Hershel could kick the group out of the farm.
  • Alongside the other members of the group, Dale helped in saving Beth from her zombified mother.
  • He took care of Carl alongside Andrea after the former found out his mother was pregnant.
  • He was the only one in the group to be against killing Randall, as he believed that he was just a kid and that he didn't deserve to get killed.
  • He tried to convince the group to spare Randall's life, and even put his grudges with Shane aside in order to try to stop Randall's death. When it failed and most of the group practically agreed to kill Randall (outside of Hershel and T-Dog, who stayed neutral), Dale decided to leave the house, as he believed that the group had lost their humanity.
  • He is posthumously the reason why the group decided to spare Randall and why they kept some of their humanity, as they decided to do it to honor Dale's memory.
