David "Dave" Stulter is the titular main protagonist of The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
He was portrayed by Canadian actor Jay Baruchel, who also voiced Hiccup in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- When he leaves the campus with Becky in the rain, he keeps her dry with his umbrella at the expense of getting soaked himself.
- He saves Becky’s radio show after lightning strikes the antenna on top of the radio station by using his expertise with technology to get their transmitter working again since he could see how important it is to her.
- Despite initially being reluctant to get involved, he agrees to at least help Balthazar get the Grimhold back and goes with him to Chinatown where the former had tracked it.
- With some help from Balthazar, he defeats Sun Lok, one of Morgana’s followers who was released from the Grimhold, as well as the dragon he brought to life, turning it back into a float and freeing the men who were trapped inside.
- Despite doing what he agreed to do, he decides to keep learning magic from Balthazar and becomes his apprentice.
- When Becky gets mugged while they’re in the subway station and has her grandmother’s bracelet stolen, he bravely confronts the mugger, knocks him out by levitating a garbage can and hitting him with it, and leaves him to get arrested while he returns Becky’s stuff to her.
- Despite just having had a falling out with Balthazar out of a combination of feeling overwhelmed by his responsibilities and like he isn’t capable of being the Prime Merlinean after a cleaning spell goes wrong, he saves his life from Horvath by stopping several knives in midair that he attempted to impale him with.
- Despite Horvath forcing him to give back the Grimhold as well as give up his ring, which is the source of his magic, to save Becky, and Balthazar telling him to stay out of the confrontation with Morgana since he hasn’t awakened as the Prime Merlinean and can’t use magic without his ring yet, he still decides to follow him and risk his life to foil Morgana and Horvath.
- After Becky decides to get involved, he instructs her to climb up to one of the satellite dishes and knock it out of place to disrupt Morgana’s Rising spell, which succeeds and prevents her from raising an army of the undead.
- He saves Balthazar from Horvath again by coming up with the idea to attach a tesla coil to the former’s car and uses it to disarm him of his staff when he arrives on the scene.
- When Balthazar absorbs Morgana’s soul from Veronica’s body to free her and asks to be sealed in the Grimhold, he refuses and insists on there being another way.
- When Morgana escapes from his body and tries to incinerate the three of them with a fire spell, he bravely tries to shield them without his ring and succeeds, having awakened as the Prime Merlinean.
- Despite initially being overwhelmed and almost killed by her, he defeats Morgana by using a plasma bolt to activate some nearby tesla coils and has them zap her by connecting to the nearby lamp posts and power lines, then unleashes a furious volley of bolts to destroy her, saving humanity from the threat she posed.
- He revives Balathazar after he was hit and killed by one of her plasma bolts by using his own to restart his heart, allowing him and Veronica to finally be reunited.
