Dende is a supporting character from the Dragon Ball franchise. He was a child from Planet Namek. He helped Gohan and Krillin use the Dragon Balls, and was sent to Earth along with the rest of his revived race. Later when Earth needed a new guardian, he was chosen, and helped create the new set of Dragon Balls made from the old ones. Since he's been Earth's guardian.
He is one of the late Namekian Elder Guru's sons.
He was voiced in the original Japanese version by Tomiko Suzuki. In the FUNimation dub he is voiced by Laura Bailey as a child, and by Justin Cook as an adult.
In Dragon Ball DAIMA as a mini, he was voiced by Emi Lo in English.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- Despite Dragon Ball's high admirable standards, Dende stands out due to his fewer resources and low power level, providing critical assistance to the Dragon Team with his abilities and the Dragon Balls he recreated.
- He lacks corrupting factors, proving himself to be incredibly kind and respectful to others, even his former enemies, and never displays hatred towards his foes.
Dragon Ball Z[]
- He joins Gohan and Krillin in collecting the Namekian Dragon Balls to help bring back their friends and to keep Frieza from gaining immortality.
- He summons Porunga for Gohan and Krillin and grants their wish to bring back Piccolo and teleport him to Namek to help them fight Frieza.
- He heals Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo during the fight with Frieza, saving their lives multiple times.
- He heals Vegeta despite the Saiyan slaughtering his people.
- Dende uses Porunga to teleport everyone except for Goku and Frieza from Namek to Earth so that they won't be in danger during the fight, also ensuring that Frieza couldn't wish for immortality.
- He has Porunga revive Namek and teleport the Namekians there after Frieza previously destroyed it.
- He agrees to become the new guardian of Earth and upgrades Shenron to enhance his power and allow him to grant more wishes. As a result, all of the people killed by Cell were resurrected.
- After Gohan's battle with Cell, Dende heals him.
- During the battle with Kid Buu, Dende suggests using the Namekian Dragon Balls to assist in the battle. This would cause Kibito Kai to teleport both himself and Dende to Namek and have Moori summon Porunga to grant their wishes.
- Under Vegeta's orders, Dende has Porunga restore Earth and revive his friends and the people of Earth after Majin Buu had killed them.
- During Goku's struggle with Kid Buu, Dende has Porunga restore his energy, which helps him defeat Buu and save the universe.
Dragon Ball Daima[]
- When Goma and Degusu arrive to the Lookout and ask about the Dragon Balls, Dende senses their sinister intentions and refuses to assist them.
- After Gomah is defeated, Dende tells Neva he will encourage the Namekians on New Namek to return to the Demon Realm, which Neva deeply appreciates.
Dragon Ball Super[]
- When Piccolo is killed by Frieza and teleported to the Lookout, Dende breaks out in tears for the fallen Namekian.
- Dende recreates and adjusts the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to assist Goku and Vegeta in preparation for the Universe 6 Tournament.
- When Vegeta destroys the Hyperbolic Time Chamber in rage after his loss to Goku Black, Dende does not scold him for this and only wishes him luck in his fight against Goku Black.
- In preparation for the Tournament of Power, Dende assists Goku in locating Android 17 to recruit him.
- Dende informs Goku about Uub, the reincarnation of Majin Buu, encouraging Goku to train him once he is old enough.
- Dende senses something is wrong on New Namek, warning Piccolo about the peril on the Namekian planet. After being fully informed by Jaco and Bulma about the situation, he assists Jaco in recruiting members to the Galactic Patrol to fight against Moro.
- Dende warns Piccolo about the Marcereni Gang's allegiance to Moro, allowing Piccolo to shoot down the ship and apprehend the criminals before they escape.
- During the battle with Moro, Dende chooses to go into battle and heal the injured fighters. Despite being warned of the risks, Dende replies that it's his duty as Guardian of Earth to protect it regardless of the risk.
- When Moro puts up a barrier to prevent Dende from healing the others, Dende cries and berates himself for failing to look after Earth and its denizens.
- After Whis creates a hole in the barrier to move the injured Z Fighters, Dende heals Goku while Merus fights Moro, allowing Goku to fight against Moro and awaken Perfected Ultra Instinct.
- When the Red Ribbon Army creates new androids, Piccolo requests Dende to unlock his potential. While incapable of doing it himself, he upgrades Shenron to allow the dragon to unlock dormant potential. The power granted to Piccolo would be pivotal in defeating Cell Max.
Trivia[]
- Kami, Guru and Dende are the only three Namekians in the Dragon Ball series to be Pure Good.
- Ironically, all three of them are responsible for creating a set of Dragon Balls.
