~ Dewey to Gale during another Ghostface massacre in Scream 2. |
Sheriff Dwight "Dewey" Riley is the deuteragonist of the Scream franchise.
He is the retired sheriff of the police force in Woodsboro, California that previously led many investigations against the Ghostface killers that appeared after the death of Maureen Prescott, working alongside Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers to solve the mysteries and deduce the culprits. He led a successful career despite having many near death experiences up until his death in 2022, after endangering his own life to finish off Amber Freeman to give Samanth and Tara Carpenter a chance to escape, leading to Sidney and Gale personally going after Amber, the accomplice of Richie Kirsch, to avenge Dewey's death.
He was portrayed by David Arquette.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
Scream (1996)[]
- After hearing about the death of Casey Becker and Steve Orth, he made it his goal to catch the killer no matter what.
- When Sidney made a 911 call after being attacked by Ghostface, Dewey was the first one to arrive on the scene to aid her, arresting Billy Loomis after Sidney suspected him (which later turned out to be correct).
- He allowed Sidney to sleep at his house with his sister Tatum after her attack so she can be safe in case Ghostface attacked her again.
- He acted as an escort for Sidney and Tatum to protect them in case Ghostface came after them.
- He correctly deduces that Neil Prescott's cellular could have been cloned when the threatening call was made towards Sidney.
- After seeing Neil's car being run off the road and into the forest near Stu Macher's house, he believed Neil must be intending to kill people at Stu's party and runs towards it to save as many people as he can.
- He attempted to respond to Sidney's screams of help even after Ghostface stabbed him in the back, fainting from blood loss in the process.
Scream 2[]
- He travelled to Windsor College after hearing about the murders of two college students, wanting to catch the killer yet again.
- He warned Sidney to be suspicious of anyone she knows as they could be killers wanting to follow in Billy Loomis's footsteps and repeat what happened in the first film, before telling her he will stick around to protect her in case she does get targeted by a Ghostface killer.
- He ran to Sidney's aid after learning that she was being attacked by Ghostface, scaring the killer away in the process after noticing Dewey.
- He worked with Randy Meeks to try and figure out who the culprit is by going through their group of suspects, correctly deducing that Gale wasn't one of the killers in the process.
- After Randy got a call from Ghostface, he and Gale both tried to find them by looking at many strangers on campus to see if they are currently on their phones and talking to Randy.
- He teamed up with Gale to find the killer after Randy's death, coming to her aid when she was attacked by Ghostface and gave Gale a warning to run after he was stabbed to near death by Ghostface.
Scream 3[]
- He successfully deduced that the Ghostface was killing people in the order of the Stab 3 script, acknowledging that Jennifer Jolie is the next victim so her bodyguard, Steven Stone can keep an extra eye on her.
- He protected the remaining Stab 3 cast members and Gale after Steven was murdered by Ghostface, telling them to run outside after correctly suspecting the messages Ghostface is sending them through the fax machine is a trap.
- He saved Gale's life by shooting Ghostface before he could sneak up and stab her from behind.
- He took notes of Randy's horror movie rules to survival in case they are needed later.
- He came to Sidney's aid after she screamed for help when Ghostface attacked her and nearly drove her insane, before comforting her by telling her that he believes what she told him and doesn't see her as crazy.
- He attempted to save Jennifer after noticing someone was hiding behind the one-way mirrors in Roman Bridger's house.
- He attempted to save Gale after she was attacked by Ghostface, only failing because his gun had run out of ammunition.
- He broke free from his bindings after Ghostface chased after Sidney and took Mark Kincaid's gun from him in order to save Sidney from Ghostface, revealed to be Roman.
- He warned the others that Roman might come back to life for one last scare and could possibly not be dead, paying attention to Randy's rules, before finishing Roman off for good after he attempted to kill Sidney, himself, Gale and Kincaid by killing him with a headshot.
Scream 4[]
- He led an investigation to find the latest Ghostface killer after being informed that two teenagers had been stabbed and killed the night before.
- He gave 24-hour protection to Sidney and her family in order to keep them safe while he investigates.
- He saved Gale's life again when Ghostface attempted to stab her to death after seeing Ghostface sneak up on her through cameras in her car.
- He sent a group of officers to Kirby Reed's house after being called by Sidney to tell him that Ghostface is nearby.
- He rushed to Sidney's hospital room to save her from Jill Roberts after Gale realized that Jill was Ghostface, distracting Jill long enough to give Gale and Judy Hicks time to arrive and come to Sid's aid.
Scream (2022)[]
- He told Samantha Carpenter the rules to surviving the horror movie she is in to help her, and her friends survive the Ghostface killer that is after her and her sister, during which he correctly guessed Richie as one of the killers.
- He called Sidney to let her know about the new Ghostface killings so she can be prepared for them.
- He went to protect Sam's little sister, Tara Carpenter's group of friends from Ghostface after being convinced to by Sidney.
- He investigated who the Ghostface killer could be after the death of Judy and her son, Wes.
- He saved Tara from Ghostface after Sam stalls for time as they head up an elevator.
- He went back to assure Ghostface's death by shooting them in the head, only to end up dying after being momentarily distracted by a call from Gale, ultimately giving his life up to protect the others from harm.
- While he did have a brief jerk moment where he was annoyed with Sam and Richie by telling them to go away, this was merely a heating-up period as they caused him to spill coffee on him, likely making him more aggressive, and he appears to feel bad about it later.
Trivia[]
- He is the only Scream hero to be Pure Good, since every other character in the franchise has several moments of being mischievous, reckless, and above all, foul-mouthed.
