~ Echo to Hunter. |
CT-1409 (nicknamed “Echo”) is a supporting character in the 2008-2020 animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and one of the three tritagonists (alongside Tech and Crosshair) of its 2021 spin-off/sequel Disney+ series Star Wars: The Bad Batch.
He is a soldier of the 501st Legion, the last surviving member of Domino Squad, later a member of the Clone Force 99.
He is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, who also voices Captain Rex and Fives in the same series.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- Despite being a cyborg, he has clear moral agency since he chooses to do what is right no matter what. Not to mention, he was already good before his transformation into a cyborg, unlike his evil counterpart, General Grievous who willingly chooses to walk the path of evil.
- Although he initially quarrelled with the rest of his Domino Squad members, he eventually was able to get along and become good friends with them.
- While he did do mercenary work under Cid, this was just to get a new life after defecting from the Imperial Army, and he no longer worked with her after she betrayed them to the Empire.
- Although he hated Separatists for all they have done, he subverts it after rescuing Separatist senator Avi Singh and his droid GS-8 and realizing that not all Separatists are bad. This is also justified considering Wat Tambor is part of the Separatists and he ruined his life.
- While he did join Clone Force 99 after the Battle of Anaxes, unlike the other members, he never truly reveled in their knack for disobeying orders and enjoyment in completing missions and only joined just because he thought he was different from the other clones.
- Although he does wish Clone Force 99 would stay in Rex’s resistance network, he is never excessively upset about it and accepts that they choose a different path from him.
The Clone Wars[]
- Along with Fives, Hevy, Rex and Cody, they defend the Rishi Moon outpost from Separatists.
- He was assigned again to defend Kamino where he gave a speech of encouragement alongside Fives to the cadets there and defends Tipoca City from Separatist forces. Due to his bravery, he was promoted to an ARC Trooper.
- He goes on a mission to Lola Sayu to rescue Jedi Master Even Piell and Admiral Tarkin from the Citadel warden Osi Sobeck.
- He tried to defend their escape shuttle from a commando droid that was trying to destroy it with a laser turret, but failed as the shuttle exploded and he gets missing in action.
- Although Wat Tambor captures him and turns him into a cyborg where he used Rex's battle strategy algorithm against his will, he was not even aware of what he was doing and immediately defects after Rex, Anakin and Clone Force 99 find and rescue him.
- After returning to action, he plays a big part in the Republic's victory in the Battle of Anaxes by tricking Admiral Trench into sending all of his droids into one place and using his cybernetic arm to shut them all down simulatenously using an electromagnetic pulse. Due to this, he saved the whole planet of Anaxes.
- He joins Clone Force 99 only because he's no longer a regular clone, due to his cybernetic enhancements which could be useful for them in combat and special situations.
- Along with the rest of Clone Force 99, he helps the Wookiees defend Kashyyyk. (Deleted scene)
The Bad Batch[]
Season 1[]
- When Order 66 was executed during the Battle of Kaller, He along with the rest of Clone Force 99 (with the exception of Crosshair), refused to obey due to their genetic mutations (along with his cybernetic enhancements) makes them immune and eventually defected from the new Galactic Empire that replaced the Galactic Republic.
- Although he did fight some clones in the mess hall, it was out of self-defense.
- After stopping at Saleucami and being told by fellow clone trooper Cut Lawquane about the chips, he and Tech steal chain codes so that he and his family can book a transport off-world.
- On Pantora under Hunter's orders, he disguises himself as a protocol droid so that they can borrow the droids from a civilian to modify their ship so that they can't be seen by the Empire.
- He then tells them of a Jedi informant named Cid for information on the bounty hunter that captured Omega, Fennec Shand, and they rescue Jabba's rancor Muchi to do so.
- Along with the rest of Clone Force 99, he tries to steal a Separatist tactical droid head for battle intel, but then get into conflicts with Trace and Rafa Martez before making peace with them.
- With the help of Rex, he removes his chip.
- Even though it's disabled thanks to his cybernetic enhancements from the Separatists, this is necessary for the chip if it gets enabled again.
- Along with the rest of Clone Force 99, he saves Senator Avi Singh and his protocol droid GS-8 and puts his differences aside with them.
- Alongside the rest of Clone Force 99, he gave Cham Syndulla and his family supplies and rescues them after Crosshair framed them.
- Alongside the rest of Clone Force 99, they reclaimed Cid's parlor from Roland Durand.
- He also rescued a clone commando named Gregor, but then he had to save Hunter from Crosshair when he fell off the ship.
- He and the rest of Clone Force 99 teamed up with Crosshair to escape the wreckage even though he still refused to rejoin them.
Season 2[]
- He and the rest of Clone Force 99 go on a mission to get gold from Count Dooku's treasure chest on Serenno in hopes of getting a better life, but they fail when Captain Wilco and his forces ambushed them. And when Omega was clinging onto the gold, Echo told her to leave it, not because he wanted to make their lives worse, but because it was too dangerous for Omega.
- He and Clone Force 99 save Gungi, a Wookiee who also happens to be a Jedi youngling, and subsequently defend Kashyyyk from Trandoshans.
- After Clone Force 99 was called back into action to help Rex, Riyo Chuchi and Bail Organa expose Vice Admiral Rampart for destroying Kamino, Echo decides to leave the group to help Rex rescue other clones, including Captain Howzer from the Imperial Science Division, although he promises to occasionally return to support them in other missions.
- He ends up helping Clone Force 99 to inform them on Pabu that the Science Division captured many clones with Crosshair being one of them and they go on a mission to go rescue him, which ended up with the death of Tech.
- When Dr. Royce Hemlock captures Omega thanks to Cid's betrayal, Echo vows to not stop searching for Omega until she is found.
Season 3[]
- When he hears that Crosshair redeemed himself, he gave him a second chance to prove that he changed. He also stopped a quarrel between him and Hunter. After the mission, he forgave Crosshair and welcomed him back to Clone Force 99.
- Along with Gregor, he comes to Clone Force 99, Rex and Howzer's rescue after they talked Wolffe down from capturing Omega.
- Although he did treat Rampart as a butt-monkey like the other members of Clone Force 99, it is warranted due to destroying Tipoca City.
- He gave Clone Force 99 and Rampart disguises to get into Mount Tantiss.
- He disguises as a Stormtrooper and tries to find the location of Omega, but when he encounters Emerie Karr, he reveals himself and convinces her to turn against the Empire.
- He and Omega freed all of the clones trapped on Mount Tantiss, as well as Rampart and Nala Se, while also playing a huge role in defeating Dr. Hemlock. After this, he leaves on his ship to relocate the clones they freed and convinces Emerie to join his and Rex's clone rebellion.
Trivia[]
- He is the first Pure Good from the Star Wars franchise to be cybernetically modified and is one of three clone troopers in Star Wars to be Pure Good, alongside Captain Rex and Fives. Interestingly enough, all of them are from the same unit, the 501st Legion.
- In the Legends universe, Echo's story followed roughly the same path until the Citadel event where although Echo survived and became a cyborg in the Canon continuity, he did not survive in the Legends version.
