How can I bring joy when I now know that we are bringing misery to thousands of innocent people?
~ Emily questioning Sera.
Hi! I'm Emily, the other seraphim, though you can call me Em! Emmy, E, whatever you want, I go by whatever. Welcome to Heaven!
~ Emily introducing herself to Charlie and Vaggi.

Emily is a major character in the adult animated musical series Hazbin Hotel.

She is a seraphim angel who is welcoming of newcomers and gets along with Charlie upon meeting her. Upon finding out about the exterminations, she shows absolute disgust with her own people and vouches for Charlie's wish to redeem Hell's citizens.

She is one of two known residents of Heaven to genuinely support Charlie's goals, the other being Sir Pentious. Likewise, when Pentious arrives in Heaven, Emily assists in making him feel welcomed while also helping Charlie and her friends in stopping the Vees from declaring war on Heaven.

She is voiced by Shoba Narayan.

What Makes Her Pure Good?[]

In General[]

  • She's one of if not the kindest and most cheerful Angel in Heaven, as she always tries to bring joy to the people of Heaven and always wants to do the right thing.
    • Although she can get slightly mad at times, as she got angry at Sera for hiding the truth of the Exterminations and seems to dislike Lute, arguing with the latter at times, none of these moments are remotely corrupting as she had every right to be upset at learning that her big sister enabled genocide and it's clear she seems to just disagree with Lute's sadism and hatred of sinners. Not to mention, she forgave Sera in season 2.
    • Ironically, most of the angels in Season 1 seemed to be bad people, with Adam and Lute committing genocide, and Sera enabling said genocide, making Emily stand out as one of the only angels to actually be a good person back in Season 1.
    • Despite the hatred and contempt the sinners of Hell showed to her, she never once showed any of them any anger or negative, not even towards Vox after he destroyed one of her wings and almost killed her, even seeming concerned at the sight of his breakdown.
  • While she was slightly insensitive to Pentious being upset about being in Heaven as the latter wanted to see his friends, this isn't corrupting as she was just excited due to Pentious being the first redeemed sinner and wanted him to have a good time in Heaven. After seeing him outright try to kill himself, she calms down and realizes that maybe she should stop showing him around now.
  • Although the Admirable Standards of the Hellaverse are incredibly high, Emily easily passes it for saving many Sinners despite most of them hating her for something she didn't even know was happening, and leading the charge to stop the Might of Lilith from destroying half the Pentagram.
    • She also has less resources than people like Charlie or Lucifer, as the former is the Princess of Hell and has an extreme amount of abilities, and the latter is the King of Hell and is one of the most powerful beings of all time.
    • Additionally, her most heroic action was done while she was injured, as she lost a wing, making her most heroic action done with less resources.

Season 1[]

  • After learning of Charlie and Vaggi's arrival to Heaven, she and Sera welcome them inside gladly. Emily then helps St. Peter give the two of them a tour of Heaven and seems extremely excited to see new visitors.
  • During the court, she constantly tries to support Charlie's idea of redemption, even though evidence of it hadn't surfaced at the time,
  • Seeing that Angel Dust had fulfilled everything on Adam's list of what gets a person into Heaven, she starts singing to Sera about how Charlie was right and that redemption could infact be possible.
    • During the same song, after learning of the exterminations happening in Hell, she was shocked and angry at Sera for enabling them, she then stood up to Heaven while calling out it's hypocrisy.
  • While Charlie and Vaggie got forcefully sent back down to Hell by Adam, Emily assured them to not give up on redemption and that she'd find a way to help them.
  • She questioned Sera about the exterminations and said she may even struggle to bring joy to the people in Heaven due to knowing that they slaughter Sinners every year.
    • She even called Sinners innocent people, even if most of them are far from it, it still shows that Emily doesn't care how bad of people they are and thinks that they shouldn't be killing anyone, even if they are demons.
  • While sitting with Sera, who she appears to have reconciled with, she sees Sir Pentious ascend to Heaven, while Sera is horrified, Emily shows nothing but joy that redemption is possible.

Season 2[]

  • When Sir Pentious is taken to the court, Emily tries to calm down all of the angels by telling them they should be trying to make things right with Hell instead of being worried.
    • Throughout the court, she constantly tries to convince Sera and Lute that Pentious never forced his way in and he was redeemed.
  • In court, she notices how stressed and guilty Sera is and repeatedly is shown to comfort her instead of being angry, holding her hand to help her calm down, being saddened at her almost lashing out at Pentious rather than angry and even embracing her big sister as she's crying, showing she's forgiven her.
  • She is overjoyed when she is allowed to show Pentious around Heaven, and gladly tries to make him have the best first day in Heaven, later singing a song showing him around Heaven.
    • Upon seeing Pentious attempt to shoot himself and start break down crying after realizing he can't leave Heaven, Emily realizes that maybe that they've shown him enough of Heaven now.
  • Upon seeing Pentious dismayed about losing his friends and Egg Boiz, she uses her powers in order to create angelic replicas of his Egg Boiz to cheer him up.
  • She makes a room for Pentious and designs it to have pictures of all of his friends back in Hell.
  • She (along with Sera and the Speaker of God) choose Abel as the next leader of the Exorcists, when felt he'd handle the situation with more fairly.
  • She uses a portal to go down to Hell so she can tell Charlie about everything going on in Heaven, such as Pentious' redemption and Heaven's lockdown, and congratulates her on the Hotel proving that redemption for Sinners is possible when Charlie was worried that it wasn't and that Pentious had died the eternal death after sacrificing himself.
  • She convinces Sera to go down to Hell to apologize to Hell for allowing the exterminations to happen with gift baskets.
    • Additionally, Emily didn't even partake, nor even know about the Exterminations, so she was only apologizing due to the good of her heart and felt guilty for things her people did.
  • When Vox and the rest of Hell reject their apology, enraged and justified that they are attempting to apologize for genocide with gift baskets, but Emily tries to convince them that they are genuinely sorry for what they did.
    • Despite Vox constantly dunking on Emily and the rest of Heaven for what they did, she still pulls Lute back when the latter attempts to attack Vox after mocking Adam's demise.
  • When Vox showed pictures to everyone he took over the years of Exorcists killing Sinners to give people more reason to hate them, it made Emily see a lot more how serious the impact was on all Sinners, horrified seeing the Exorcists army not only killing Sinners, but took sadistic joy in murdering and torturing them, seeing how scared and defenseless they were, making Emily feel even more immensely guilty than ever before, but Vox inlists fear into her.
  • She tries to convince Sera to not go to war with Hell like Lute wants to and instead make peace with them. When Sera obliges and trusts her little sister, Emily hugs and thanks her.
  • Upon being allowed to enter Hell to help Charlie and her friends make peace with Heaven, she gladly accepts and heads straight down with a portal, telling Charlie about everything that happened. Later, she is able to convince Pentious to create a device so he could get into contact with Hell while in Heaven, team up with Charlie and her friends stop Vox from destroy Heaven.
  • She distracts the Vees with some animals from Heaven, allowing Husk and Cherri to save Angel Dust, and Niffty and Baxter connect Vox's servers with Pentious' device.
  • She saves several Sinners from being killed by the Might of Lilith after Vox starts to go crazy and fire many shots everywhere, causing multiple damage and casualties, even though she's been shown nothing but hatred by the Sinners. She even saves Alastor, someone who couldn't care less about her, and ended up losing one of her wings in doing so (while she didn't know how vile he truly was, it's unlikely it would've made a difference).
  • In her most admirable action, she is the first one to try to use her powers to stop the Might of Lilith, although struggling in the process due to her injury of losing a wing. This led to several other Overlords helping in doing so, ultimately destroying the Might of Lilith once and for all and saving half the Pentagram.
  • When Sera came through the portal and burst into tears at the sight of her destroyed wing, Emily smiled at her so she wouldn't feel bad and embraced her big sister.
  • With Hell and Heaven now on better terms since she and Charlie put end of war, Emily helps deliver supplies to Hell and gives out letters from Cherri to Pentious.

Trivia[]

  • She and Mr. Wrigglers are the only Hellaverse Pure Goods so far.
    • Currently, she is also the only one who has more than one Pure Good incarnation.
  • On that note, she is curently the only Hazbin Hotel character who can even qualify to be Pure Good considering the nature of the show.
    • Although she's Pure Good now, that could change in future seasons and other characters may qualify.
