~ Clopin introducing Esmeralda |
Esmeralda is the deuteragonist of Disney's 34th animated feature The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and a major character in its 2002 sequel The Hunchback of Notre Dame II.
She is a Romani street performer who fights for the liberation of her kind against Judge Claude Frollo's oppressive rule.
She was voiced by Demi Moore, while her singing voice was done by Heidi Mollenhauer.
What Makes Her Pure Good?[]
- While the movie teaches the audience that people should be judged by their behavior and not their appearances, Esmeralda is every bit as good as she appears.
- When Quasimodo accidentally crashed into her tent at the Feast of Fools, instead of being angry at him, she instead helped him up.
- After Quasimodo was being tortured by the townspeople for his deformity (which she accidentally revealed), she saves him and stands up for him.
- She also does this because his torture is partially her fault, as she was the one who brought him onto the stage.
- While Frollo believes that she's a gypsy witch who is tempting him to sin, the movie establishes this isn't really the case.
- When she is trapped at Notre Dame, at the suggestion of the Archdeacon, she sings a prayer asking for the liberation of her people, showing she truly cares for them.
- Though she's initially distrustful towards Captain Phoebus, she later saves him from being killed by Frollo's soldiers and helps heal him after escaping from Notre Dame.
- She intervenes when Clopin tries to kill Quasimodo and Phoebus at the Court of Miracles.
- When Frollo has her sentenced to be burned at the stake and her gives an ultimatum to be his mistress or die, she spits in his face. While this may be offensive, it is justified due to what Frollo did to her.
- While she decides that Captain Phoebus is her ideal husband, she and Quasimodo have a brotherly and sisterly relationship.
Trivia[]
- Her counterpart from Victor Hugo's original novel does not qualify due to the fact that Esmeralda is just as disgusted by Quasimodo's appearance as everyone else, and opts to help him out not because of sympathy, but because of pity. Unlike the Disney version, who genuinely helps Quasimodo out of the kindness of her heart, the novel version of Esmeralda differs for having a more grey and dubious morality. Additionally, the novel version was a damsel-in-distress for the majority of the plot and didn't do much in terms of heroism, thus failing to meet her story's admirable standards to Quasimodo, who rescues her on multiple occasions.
