I have never pledged myself to any Baron, not even my family's. I don't care about titles. I don't care about territories.
~ Gaius Chau

Gaius Chau is a major protagonist in the AMC series Into the Badlands.

He is the brother of Juliet Chau, the ruler of the Fox Territory and one of the most dangerous and cruel Barons in all of the Badlands. Despite being born into a privileged position, he despises his family for their brutality and eventually betrays them in order to join forces with the Widow, a Baron who wants to change the Badlands for the better by taking down the other Barons and ending the Cog slave trade.

He was portrayed by Lewis Tan.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

  • As a child he was raised to think that Cogs were lesser than his family, but Gaius was always repulsed by this attitude and eventually started a relationship with a Cog named Minerva.
  • During his birthday, Minerva accidentally dropped a tray of glasses, and Gaius was ordered by his father to beat her for this mistake. Gaius refused to do so, leading to his sadistic sister Juliet doing it instead. Minerva was then locked in the pig pen as a punishment, and Gaius was so disgusted by this that he decided to renounce his family completely and work to help free Cogs in the Fox Territory.
  • Gaius is eventually imprisoned after he is caught freeing Cogs and told if he returns to his family's ideals he will be set free but even after eighteen months of imprisonment he refuses.
  • After Juliet threatens to murder the Clippers who are loyal to him and a large number of innocent Cogs, he agrees to do her bidding and is sent to kill Pilgrim.
  • When the attempt on Pilgrim's life fails, Gaius ends up being captured by the Widow, who is a grown up Minerva. Gaius makes it clear to her that he is on her side and wants to help her as she desires to also put an end to the Cog slave trade.
  • He helps to stop Juliet's forces from capturing people from a war refugee camp, aiding Nathaniel Moon and Tilda in fending them off.
  • After him and the Widow rekindle their romance, Gaius agrees to help her in the war against his sister, but he makes it clear that he does not care about the Widow's title and that he's doing this because it's the right thing and out of his love for her.
  • He leads an invasion into his sister's territory and helps the Widow and Tilda break into her mansion to kill her.
  • When the Widow goes missing after her confrontation with Juliet, Gaius and Tilda begin tracking them down. They go to Gaius and Juliet's mother Ophelia and demand to know his sisters location, and while Ophelia doesn't give it up, Gaius can't bring himself to hurt his mother and instead renounces his family and leaves, at which point Tilda kills Ophelia instead.
  • Juliet is eventually killed by the Widow, and the Badlands war ends. Gaius takes over the Fox Territory, and spares the Clippers that served his sister as he wants to be a merciful ruler.
  • Pilgrim announces his conquest for the Badlands, and Gaius aids in defeating him, destroying the Meridian Chamber which gives Pilgrim his power alongside the Widow and Tilda.

Trivia[]

  • Gaius is perhaps the only example of an "assassin" character being Pure Good. This is because even though he is called an assassin in-universe, he isn't actually considered to be one since the only assassination he tried to carry out he was blackmailed into doing or else innocent people would have died.
