This article is for the version of Gandalf from the mainstream continuity. You may be looking for more info on his Peter Jackson counterpart.

All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.
~ Gandalf to Frodo.
You cannot pass, I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. You cannot pass. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass.
~ Gandalf to the Durin's Bane
This, then, is my counsel, we have not the Ring. In wisdom or great folly it has been sent away to be destroyed, lest it destroy us. Without it we cannot by force defeat Sauron's force. But we must at all costs keep his Eye from his true peril… We must call out his hidden strength, so that he shall empty his land… We must make ourselves the bait, though his jaws should close on us… We must walk open-eyed into that trap, with courage, but small hope for ourselves. For, my lords, it may well prove that we ourselves shall perish utterly in a black battle far from the living lands; so that even if Barad-dûr be thrown down, we shall not live to see a new age. But this, I deem, is our duty.
~ Gandalf's plan to defeat Sauron once and for all.

Gandalf is the main protagonist of the Middle-Earth legendarium by J.R.R. Tolkien. He is the chief protagonist of the highly acclaimed epic fantasy novels, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, the final protagonist of The Silmarillion, and the main protagonist of The History of Middle-Earth. He is a wise and elderly wizard and one of the Ainur, primordial spirits that entered Arda when it was first created, and who assists Frodo in destroying the One Ring.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

  • When entering Middle-Earth as one of the five wizards, he chose to take on the form of an elderly man as a sign of humility.
  • Spent many centuries as a traveler in Middle-Earth and served as a mentor for the elves and other inhabitants.
  • Helped the Dwarves of Erebor retake their homeland.
  • He called Bard the Bowman out for trying to buy gold with the blood of dwarves. (Bard the Bowman expected the dwarves to surrender instead of fighting)
  • Warned the Dwarves of Erebor, the Men of Laketown and the Elves of the Woodland Realm of the oncoming Orc armies. He also tried to convinced them to also work together to take them down.
  • Battled against said Orc armies in the Battle of the Five Armies.
  • Spent many centuries gathering information on Sauron and the One Ring to prepare for his return to power and stop it.
  • Upon seeing the mystical nature of Bilbo's ring and his unusual attachment to it, after Bilbo accuses Gandalf of wanting to take it for himself, Gandalf compassionately hugs Bilbo and convinces him to relinquish the ring.
  • When offered to hold the ring by Frodo, Gandalf refused to give in to the temptation of using the ring despite the power it would give him and what he could do with it, knowing it would corrupt him and not wanting to take the risk. He even stated that he's more afraid of what he could do to the ring than the other way around, which makes him even more conscientious and self-aware.
  • Accompanies Frodo in his quest to destroy the One Ring.
  • When Frodo states it was a pity Bilbo didn't kill Gollum when he had the chance, Gandalf reprimands him, remarking how pity is what led Bilbo not to kill him, expressing sympathy and pity for Gollum's descent into madness due to the ring's influence and inspiring Frodo to be more sympathetic towards his enemies.
  • Sacrifices himself by fighting Durin's Bane alone in order to give the rest of the Fellowship time to escape Moria.
  • Freed Théoden from the control of Gríma and Saruman.
  • Saved the people of Rohan by arriving with Eomer and reinforcements to turn the tide of the battle against the Uruk-hai at Helm's Deep.
  • When he found out that Sauron was going to attack Minas Tirith, he went to Minas Tirith to warn them and have them call for help.
  • After Denethor refused to call for help, he had Pippin light the Beacons to call for help and help save the people of Minas Tirith.
  • Took charge in the battle of Minas Tirth and therefore led and participated in the battle against the armies of Mordor to protect the city.
  • Participated in the battle of the Black Gates, giving Frodo and Sam more time to destroy the Ring and save Middle-Earth.
  • Saved Frodo and Sam from the fiery slopes of Mount Doom.

Trivia[]

  • According to Tolkien, had Gandalf chosen to take the One Ring, he would have been far worse than Sauron, likely meaning he would've become Pure Evil as well, though thankfully Gandalf refused to take any chances and thus remained Pure Good which is why Frodo was almost morally scaled to the criteria as he took the huge burden upon himself so that Gandalf would be preserved as a Pure Good.
