Genya Shinazugawa to Sanemi Shinazugawa; his final words.

Genya Shinazugawa is a major character in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba franchise.

He was another Demon Slayer who joined at the same time as Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, and Kanao Tsuyuri, the younger brother of the Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa, as well as the protege of the Stone Hashira, Gyomei Himejima.

Unlike most other demon slayers, Genya doesn't possess a breathing style, but he makes up for that with his ability to transform into a demon by devouring a demon's flesh, granting him supernatural abilities.

He is voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto in Japanese and Zeno Robinson in English.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

In General/Background[]

  • When he was young, Genya tried to help support both his mother and his older brother Sanemi to help their family, following their abusive father's death.
  • He tried to warn his younger siblings to not open the door, with the siblings believing it to be their mother.
  • After finding out the actual truth of what happened, he grew remorseful for calling Sanemi "a monster" for killing their demonic mother and joined the Demon Slayer Corps to reconcile with him.
  • He trained under the Stone Hashira Gyomei Himejima to better train his physical and mental abilities, even revealing his ability to consume demons to gain their abilities.
  • Genya continued to love his brother despite Sanemi's animosity toward him (which turned out to be an act), even when the latter became aggressive with him.
  • Even though the series has high admirable standards, Genya stands out primarily because he has fewer resources than the other characters. Unlike most other characters, he is unable to use a Breathing style or the Demon Slayer Mark, and instead fights his enemies by eating demonic flesh to gain their abilities.
    • Even more interesting is the possibility that eating demonic flesh could make him a full-fledged demon because he might be able to hear Muzan Kibutsuji's voice a little. He nevertheless keeps taking the chance in order to battle the demons and defend his comrades.
  • Although Genya started off as a violent and impetuous jerk who attacked both his crow and Kanata because he was impatient and wanted his sword, and was antagonistic toward Tanjiro for the majority of the story (because the latter broke his arm and saw the boy as a rival for the Hashira rank), he swiftly subverted all of those negative aspects and is deeply remorseful for his previous actions and his impulsive behavior.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba[]

The Swordsmith Village Arc[]

  • It is revealed that he apologized to Kanata for attacking her at some point prior to the Swordsmith Village Arc, with the young girl happily accepting his apology.
  • He aided the Kamado siblings and later on Mitsuri in battling off Upper Four Kizuki demon Hantengu and his clones during the Swordsmith Village attack.
    • He saved both Tanjiro and Nezuko from Sekido, shooting off both his and Karaku's head.
    • He battled against Aizetsu, even when he was being slightly injured.
    • He tried to catch and kill Obie (the main form of Hantengu), along with Nezuko.
    • When Aizetsu tried to kill Tanjiro with his Blood Demon Art, Genya quickly jumped in and took the hit for Tanjiro.
    • While Mitsuri held off against Zohakuten, he and the Kamado siblings would chase after Obie, with Genya throwing a tree in an attempt to slow him down.
    • When Urami started to suffocate Tanjiro to death, he quickly jumped in and saved Tanjiro by pulling apart Urami's hands.
  • When he sees Nezuko being immune to the sun, he gives a smile to her and Tanjiro, congratulating the latter for getting his happy ending.
  • It's thanks to his efforts that he is among the people responsible for saving the Swordsmiths from the demons.

The Hashira Training Arc[]

  • Genya attempted to make amends with Sanemi once more during his training session, even going so far as to admit that he consumes demons in order to become as strong as him.
  • He apologized to Tanjiro for Sanemi's hostility and got them banned from the Wind Hashira's training as a result.
  • Seeing Tanjiro struggle a bit with Gyomei's training section, Genya taught the boy about the Repetitive Action technique, which Tanjiro would use in his future fight against the demons.

The Infinity Castle Arc[]

  • He participated in the fight against Upper Kizuki One Kokushibo, alongside the Hashira: Gyomei, Sanemi, and Muichiro.
    • He tried to shoot Kokushibo, who had Muichiro pinned on a column, trying to save the Mist Hashira.
    • He consumed strands of Kokushibo's hair and the flesh of his demonic sword in order to further strengthen himself, which turned him into a complete demon as a result.
    • He helped both Sanemi and Gyomei in fighting the Upper One demon by firing his bullets on the demon, weakening the demon significantly.
    • Despite being cut in half by Kokushibo, he maintained the mental fortitude to defend everyone and use his Blood Demon Art: Blood Roots, preventing Kokushibo from using his Moon Breathing and allowing Sanemi and Gyomei to behead the demons.
  • After Kokushibo's defeat, despite being on the brink of death, Genya rejected Gyomei's help and urged him to quickly help Muichiro, even though he most likely knew Muichiro was already dead at that point.
  • In his final moments, he expressed his love for Sanemi despite his older brother's fake hostile behavior toward him, saying that he did not want Sanemi to die because he is the "nicest brother in the world."
  • He was one of the people in the afterlife who helped Tanjiro break free of Muzan's control and corruption while allowing Kanao to cure Tanjiro back as a human, putting an end to Muzan once and for all and saving Tanjiro.
