Genya Shinazugawa to Sanemi Shinazugawa; his final words. |
Genya Shinazugawa is a major character in the 2016-2020 dark fantasy action manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and its 2019 anime adaption. He later becomes one of the three tritagonists (alongside Hotaru Haganezuka and Kotetsu) of the Swordsmith Village Arc and its third season adaption.
He was another Demon Slayer who joins at the same time as Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, and Kanao Tsuyuri, the younger brother of the Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa, as well as the protege of the Stone Hashira, Gyomei Himejima. Unlike most other demon slayers, Genya doesn't possesses a breathing style but he makes up for that with his ability to transform into a demon by devouring a demon's flesh, granting him supernatural abilities.
He is voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto in Japanese and Zeno Robinson in English.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General/Background[]
- When he was young, Genya tried to help support both his mother and his older brother Sanemi to help their family, following their abusive father's death.
- He tried to warn his younger siblings to not open the door, with the siblings believing it to be their mother.
- After finding out the actual truth of what happened, he grew remorseful for calling Sanemi "a monster" for killing their demonic mother and joined the Demon Slayer Corps to reconcile with him.
- He trained under the Stone Hashira Gyomei Himejima to better train his physical and mental abilities.
- Despite Sanemi's hostility towards him (although it was proven to be act), Genya never stopped loving his brother, even while he got aggressive with him.
- Despite the series' high admirable standards, Genya mainly stands out due to having lesser resources than the other characters in the series, since he was incapable of using a Breathing Style or the Demon Slayer Mark, and relies on consuming demonic flesh to battle against his enemies.
- It's also more noteworthy that consuming demonic flesh may have a risk of him turning into a complete demon, as he could hear the voice of Muzan Kibutsuji slightly. Despite this, he continues taking the risk to fight the demons and protect his comrades.
- While Genya was an impulsive and violent jerk, who attacked both his crow and Kanata for his impatience on wanting to gain his sword, and being hostile to Tanjiro for most of the story (due to the latter breaking his arm and seeing the boy as a rival for the Hashira rank), he quickly subverted all of those corrupting factors and is heavily remorseful for how he acted in the past.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba[]
The Swordsmith Village Arc[]
- It's revealed that sometime around before the Swordsmith Village Arc, he apologized to Kanata for attacking her, with the young girl easily forgiving him.
- He aided the Kamado siblings and later on Mitsuri in battling off Upper Four Kizuki demon Hantengu and his clones during the Swordsmith Village attack.
- He saved both Tanjiro and Nezuko from Sekido, shooting off both his and Karaku's head.
- He battled against Aizetsu, even when he was being slightly injured.
- He tried to catch and kill Obie (the main form of Hantengu), along with Nezuko.
- When Aizetsu tried to kill Tanjiro with his Blood Demon Art, Genya quickly jumped in and took the hit for Tanjiro.
- While Mitsuri hold off against Zohakuten, he and the Kamado siblings would chase after Obie, with Genya throwing a tree in a attempt to slow him down.
- When Urami started to suffocate Tanjiro to death, he quickly jumped in and saved Tanjiro by pulling apart Urami's hands.
- When he sees Nezuko being immune to the sun, he gives a smile to her and Tanjiro, congratulating the latter for getting his happy ending.
- It's thanks to his efforts that he is among the people responsible for saving the Swordsmiths from the demons.
The Hashira Training Arc[]
- During Sanemi's training section, Genya tried to once again reconcile with Sanemi, even going so far to reveal he eats demons so he could be strong enough to be like him.
- He apologized to Tanjiro for Sanemi's hostility and getting them banned from the Wind Hashira's training as a result.
- Seeing Tanjiro struggled a bit with Gyomei's training section, Genya taught the boy about the Repetitive Action technique, which Tanjiro would use in his future fight against the demons.
The Infinity Castle Arc[]
- He participated in the fight against Upper Kizuki One Kokushibo, alongside the Hashira: Gyomei, Sanemi, and Muichiro.
- He tried to shoot Kokushibo, who had Muichiro pinned on a column, trying to save the Mist Hashira.
- He consumed strands of Kokushibo's hair and the flesh of his demonic sword in order to further strengthen himself, which turned him into a complete demon as a result.
- He helped both Sanemi and Gyomei in fighting the Upper One demon by firing his bullets on the demon, weakening the demon significantly.
- Despite being cut in half by Kokushibo, he still had the mental strength to defend everyone and use his Blood Demon Art: Blood Roots, preventing Kokushibo on using his Moon Breathing and allowing both Sanemi and Gyomei to behead the demons.
- In his final moments, he stated that he didn't want Sanemi to die because he is the "nicest brother in the world", showing just how strong his love for Sanemi was, even with his elder brother's fake hostile act towards him.
- He was one of the people in the afterlife who helped Tanjiro break free of Muzan's control and corruption, while allowing Kanao to cure Tanjiro back as a human, putting an end to Muzan once and for all.
