You're capable of more than you know...
~ Glinda

Glinda the Good Witch of the South is the tritagonist of Disney's 2013 Oz the Great and Powerful. Glinda is the daughter of the late king of Oz, and currently rules over a peaceful kingdom of the Quadlings in Southern Oz. Glinda is not only a compassionate and benevolent witch, but also a fierce protector of her people. Though Glinda sees through Oscar's façade early on, she knows that genuine goodness lies within him.

She was portrayed by Michelle Williams, who also played Anne Weying in Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

What Makes Her Pure Good?[]

  • In general, she is a very kind, nurturing and compassionate leader to her people who is completely lacking any corrupting factors. She is also pacifistic to the extent that she forbids her people from killing, even when they're dealing with enemies who have no qualms with using lethal violence against them, and who are lead by the one who murdered her father no less.
  • After Evanora poisoned her father and framed her for the crime, forcing her into exile, she still did the best she could to protect her subjects the best she could by putting up a magical bubble barrier in the southern territory to repel anyone with evil in their hearts. She also often shared stories of the prophecy regarding how a great wizard would eventually arrive in Oz, defeat the Wicked Witch, save all of its people and take their place as the new ruler to keep their spirits up for an indefinite amount of time before Oscar arrived (though it was likely at least a few years).
  • After meeting Oscar, Finley and China Girl at a graveyard in the Forbidden Forest and clearing up the misunderstanding regarding who's truly the Wicked Witch, she gets them all to safety when Evanora subsequently sends her guards and flying baboons to kill them by first summoning a thick fog to hide them in, then once they reach a cliff as they’re running away that’s both a dead end and has a seemingly endless drop, encourages them to jump and encases them all in giant, floating bubbles.
  • Though she admits to Oscar upon arriving in her protected territory that she's aware he's not a real wizard and of all of his numerous character flaws, she still pleads that he try to help them and give her people hope, which motivates him to agree to help them take back Emerald City,
  • She stands her ground when a corrupted Theodora visits them and makes violent threats about how her and her sister's forces will massacre her people by declaring that they're a strong and united people and tries to keep her people calm when many of them start panicking in the aftermath.
  • She implores Oscar to stay when he's left feeling hopeless upon seeing what they're up against and tries to convince him that in spite of what he thinks of himself, he's capable of more than he knows and of being a good man in general. Along with China Girl's encouragement, this is one of the main factors that leads him to regaining his confidence and coming up with a plan that utilizes his talents and will help them all take back Emerald City.
  • Once the necessary preparations are complete, she plays a big part in the first phase of their plan by using her magic to create a thick fog around a field of poppies on the outskirts of Emerald City that can induce heavy sleep. Using this cover, she and her forces trick Evanora and Theodora into siccing their winged baboons on an army of pulley-rig scarecrows they created to make them think they were an army of normal people, causing many of the baboons to be knocked out and non-violently incapacitated by the poppies upon attacking them without anyone on their side getting hurt.
  • Upon being getting her wand back from China Girl and freeing herself from being executed, she confronts Evanora in the throne room, and despite the latter killing her father, she shows no anger or desire for revenge, only expressing sorrow that she'll never feel the comfort of his kindness again, as well as states she'll settle for freeing his people. She even tries to get Evanora to stand down and surrender without a fight, and only engages in a battle with her after she still attacks her and makes it clear she won't cooperate.
  • She ultimately defeats Evanora in battle by getting a hold of and destroying her amulet, which is the source of her power. She subsequently banishes her from Emerald City for the murder of her father and all her other crimes.
    • Though she does blast her out of a window before she's caught and carried away by one of her baboons, this is only in self-defense when she suddenly lunges at and tries to attack her again, and she even seems concerned when she thinks she might have sent her falling to her death.
    • Though not quite to the same extent as Oscar, she still played an almost equally pivotal part in the liberation of Emerald City, and by extension, the whole Land of Oz from Evanora's tyranny by rendering her powerless and defeating her, as well as playing the biggest part out of anyone in inspiring Oscar to be a better person and agree to help them thanks to her encouragement and belief in him. He even acknowledges this and sincerely thanks her at the end of the movie for it.
