Son Gohan, also known by his hero alias the Great Saiyaman, is one of the main characters of the Dragon Ball franchise.
He is the oldest son of Son Goku and Chi-Chi, the older brother of Goten, the husband of Videl and the father of Pan. Unlike his father, Gohan does not show much interest in fighting and instead wants to live a peaceful life as a scholar. That being said, he is willing to fight to protect those who he cares about.
He is voiced by Masako Nozawa in Japanese, Brad Swaile in the Ocean Group dub, and Kyle Herbert in the Funimation dub in English, who also voiced Kaito Momota from Danganronpa.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- He is extremely polite to people he encounters, even animals.
- He has the ability to ride the Nimbus Cloud, something that can only be used by someone with a pure heart with no selfish desires.
- He despises violence against all will and unlike his father Goku, he does not like to fight, and the only reason he ever does is when he's given no choice, or his loved ones are being threatened.
- When he fights his opponents, he often shows respect and admiration towards his enemies, even bowing to them in respect (the only exception is when it comes to his hated enemies like Cell, Frieza, and Super Buu).
- While he had some moments of arrogance, such as during his fights with Cell and Super Buu, he later subverts this thanks to Piccolo's training.
Dragon Ball Z[]
Saiyan Saga[]
- He stopped his uncle Raditz from torturing and killing Goku.
- He helped Piccolo become a much kinder person and was able to fully redeem him.
- He aided Goku in his fight with Vegeta and stopped his rampage.
Namek Saga[]
- He saved Dende from being killed by Dodoria.
- He teamed up with Vegeta to face off against the Ginyu Force.
- He and Krillin saved Vegeta from being murdered by Recoome.
- He saved Bulma from falling to her death on Planet Namek.
- When he sensed that Goku was having trouble during his battle with Frieza, instead of leaving Namek with Bulma, he chose to stay behind to stall Frieza in the hopes of preventing him from escaping before the planet blew up even though he was no match for Frieza and would have almost certainly sacrificed his life doing so had Goku not revealed he was okay and urged him to leave.
Garlic Jr. Saga[]
- In the anime-exclusive Garlic Jr. Saga, he bravely fought Garlic Jr. and his henchmen alongside Piccolo and Krillin after the former escaped the Dead Zone and infected the world's population with the Black Water Mist. He even played the biggest part in defeating them by taking out all of his henchmen and later destroying the Makyo Star per Piccolo's suggestion, which caused Garlic Jr. to lose his power and get sucked into the Dead Zone again, which he reopened in an attempt to trap the heroes in there.
Cell Saga[]
- He saved Piccolo from Dr. Gero.
- During his fight with Cell, he tried to settle things in a peaceful way, and despite knowing how evil Cell is, he didn't want to have to kill him nor he didn't want to fight him for the sake of the challenge like his father would. He only gave up on settling things peacefully with Cell when he continued on with his heinous acts, such as killing Android 16, which was the last straw for Gohan.
- And the reason why Gohan stopped holding back and killed Cell was because as mentioned by Android 16, who is also Pure Good, Cell can't be reasoned with at all and insists Gohan to unleash his true power instead of restraining himself altogether.
- He saved the other Z-Fighters from the Cell Jrs. after they were brutally beaten by them and took the Senzu Beans from Cell so they could be passed safely to the others.
- Despite being sadistic after turning Super Saiyan 2, it was only due to the power high, and he subverted it after Goku sacrificed himself to save the Earth.
- He defeated Cell for good during the Kamehameha Wave struggle, also saving the entire solar system as a result.
Majin Buu Saga[]
- He acts like a father figure towards his younger brother Goten for the first years of his life and trains him to become stronger.
- As the Great Saiyaman, he saved several citizens by stopping several burglars.
- He challenged Dabura and tried to destroy Majin Buu before he could be awoken from his slumber.
- He fought Super Buu to avenge humanity as well as his friends.
Dragon Ball Super[]
- He participates in the Super Saiyan God Ritual and uses his energy to turn Goku into a Super Saiyan God, which in turn allows Goku to save Earth from Beerus.
- He tells Goten to stay away from Frieza for his safety.
- After realizing he has become weak, Gohan asked Piccolo to train him so that he could fight threats like Frieza again.
- When Barry Kahn (under Watagash's influence) kidnapped Pan to spite Gohan for foiling his plans to impress Videl, Gohan defeated him and rescued Pan from him.
Tournament of Power Saga[]
- After training with Piccolo, Gohan managed to be humbler so that it won't be used against him in the Tournament of Power.
- He participated in the Tournament of Power to save his universe from being wiped out from existence.
- Despite Frieza saving him from Jimizu, he was still horrified at the torture the latter went through and tried to stop Frieza when he thought he was going to kill him.
- Teamed up with Frieza to eliminate Frost.
- He helped Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, Android 17 and 18 to defeat Agnilasa.
- He mainly teamed up with 17 and also saved him from being eliminated lots of times.
- He saved Frieza when Dypso was trying to eliminate him.
- He sacrificed himself to have Frieza eliminate Dyspo from the tournament.
- Gave Vegeta a Senzu Bean after his fight with Jiren.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero[]
- He saved his daughter Pan from the Red Ribbon Army and defeated Cell Max, thus saving the world once more.
- He helped reform Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 as they defected from Red Ribbon Army.
