Guru is a major character in the Namek Saga of Dragon Ball Z. He was the father of almost all the Namekians and their leader upon his death. He was also the creator of the Namekian Dragon Balls. He passed away from old age and giving his title as the leader of the Namekians to his eldest son, Moori.
He was voiced by the late Junpei Takiguchi, Masaharu Satō and Yasunori Masutani in the Japanese version, and by Robert O. Smith, Christopher R. Sabat and Bill Jenkins in the English version.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- Being the only survivor of the climatic catastrophe of Planet Namek, he dedicated his life to repopulating his planet, engendering 109 children and creating a pacifistic society. He was also a good father to them as evidenced by how much they love him.
- He created Porunga, an Eternal Dragon capable to grant any wish, for noble intentions, and his Namekian Dragon Balls were protected by the Namekians to prevent their use for evil.
- During the Frieza Saga, he decides to trust in the Dragon Team, and he draws out the dormant power of Gohan and Krillin, significantly increasing their power and giving them the strength they needed to survive their later encounters with Frieza and his soldiers. He later uses the same technique with Dende, allowing him to reach Porunga's position sooner and unlocking his healing abilities, which would help Gohan, Piccolo and Krillin survive the battle with Frieza.
- Thanks to the Namekian Dragon Balls Guru created, Dende is able to revive Piccolo, which subsequently revives Kami and reactivates the Earth's Dragon Balls. This allows Mr. Popo to revive everyone killed by Frieza and his soldiers on Namek.
- When Namek is about to explode, he communicates to Dende that he must use the last wish to have Porunga teleport everyone to Earth with the exception of Frieza and Goku (the last one at his own request), which Dende does successfully.
- In the moments before his death, he transfers the possession of the Namekian Dragon Balls to his son, Moori, so that they could continue to be used.
- He loves his children above all, to the extent that the first time he died was from a broken heart after seeing most of his children killed by Frieza's soldiers.
- He is very kind to everyone, since he welcomes Krillin and Gohan when he first meets them and is even genuinely affable to Frieza during their brief meeting. The only time when he was shown to be angry is when Nail disobeyed his order of assisting the Dragon Team (only to protect Guru from Frieza) and even then he took it very calmly.
- Despite the high standards of the series and having to compete with those of similar resources such as Kami and Dende, Guru still stands out with his resources and limited screen time. It is thanks to him that the Namekian Dragon Balls were created, which would be used to save all of the Namekians and others on Namek from dying in the planet's explosion. What's more, his decision to make Moori the new Grand Elder allows the Namekian Dragon Balls to remain in use, where they would be used later on to resurrect the people of Earth and all of Goku and Vegeta's friends who were killed by Majin Buu and later give Goku the energy he needed to kill Kid Buu and save the universe from his wrath.
Trivia[]
- While the canon version of Guru is Pure Good, his well-known TFS counterpart, Super Kami Guru, is Inconsistently Heinous due to the parody nature of the series, where he is depicted as a far more sinister, selfish, inconsiderate individual.
- Guru, Kami and Dende are the only three Namekians in the Dragon Ball series to be Pure Good.
- Ironically, all three of them are responsible for creating a set of Dragon Balls.
