Guy is the titular main protagonist of 20th Century Studios' 2021 sci-fi action comedy film Free Guy. He's an NPC of an in-universe game Free City, who began to have an advanced AI that gave him sentience.
He was portrayed by Ryan Reynolds.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- Guy is upbeat, optimistic and friendly to everyone, even people who try to kill him.
- Though he does kill several players, every instance was either in defense of himself or others or was done to someone who deserved it. Not to mention, players respawn upon death, thus he doesn't actually kill anyone.
- He also seems to derive anxiety from holding a weapon to a person's face.
- While he is an artificial intelligence, it's delved into that his programming is advanced enough to where he possesses human-level intelligence and free will, he experiences character development as well as a heating-up period, and a major theme of the movie is that he's in control of his own life, proving that Guy clearly has a moral agency.
Free Guy[]
- While he does kill a robber, it was an accident, and he is visibly shocked. Not to mention, it was done partially in self-defense.
- When Millie tells him to level up, Guy does so by helping and protecting his fellow NPCs rather than killing innocent people, as the game intended.
- He becomes an inspiration to many people, and makes players view NPCs as more than just characters in the background.
- He tries to convince his best friend, Buddy, that there could be more to life than what they know.
- In the process, he non lethally subdues a robber, and tells the NPC woman he was with that she can and should be with a good person.
- He saves Millie when she is ambushed during her heist.
- He didn't know that he was about to tell an offensive joke from trolls to Millie, as he later ditches it.
- Although he exhibits jerk behavior to three NPCs and goes on a nihilistic rant, this heating-up moment was an understandable reaction, given the context of him learning that he's not a real person. This further proves that he has a moral agency as he has human reaction to outside information.
- Upon Buddy inspiring him, Guy uses the former's connections to get into Revenjamin Buttons' base and obtains the evidence Millie was after.
- He rallies the NPCs of Free City and convinces them to take control of their destinies, forming a plan to defeat Antwan.
- When Dude tries to kill him, Guy is able to reform him by forcing the sunglasses on him.
- Even after Millie and Buddy are kicked from the game, Guy continues sprinting across the bridge and makes it to the original build of Free Life, proving that the game was built on stolen code and saving Free City.
- He is shown to be friendly to Dude when the latter reforms, showing that Guy does not hold grudges.
- He is rejoiced to see that Buddy survived.
- Overall, it's thanks to Guy that everyone is living a better life in the Life Itself game where no one has to kill each other and the NPC's can live life how they want.
Trivia[]
- He is currently the only character portrayed by Ryan Reynolds to qualify as Pure Good.
