| “ | The Demon Slayer Corps will never disappear until we eradicate all demons from this world. | „ |
| ~ Gyomei Himejima |
Gyomei Himejima (悲鳴嶼 行冥) is a major character of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba franchise.
He is a blind religious member of the Demon Slayer Corps, and is one of the nine Hashira, serving as the Stone Hashira. He's heavily stated to be the strongest demon slayer in the entire corps. He's also a trusted confidant and friend to the corps' leader, Kagaya Ubuyashiki.
He is voiced by Tomokazu Sugita in the Japanese version and Crispin Freeman in the English version.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- He had been Kagaya's trusted confidant for years and had requested several times that a Hashira serve as his bodyguard, but his requests were denied because Kagaya believed they were too valuable to be used for personal protection.
- Despite the series' high, admirable standards, Gyomei stands out primarily for his actions in rescuing Sayo from a demon (using his bare hands to crush its head until the sun came and disintegrated it) and saving the Kocho sisters, who would later join the corps (with Shinobu later playing a crucial role in defeating Muzan).
- While he is the strongest Hashira in the corps, he always remains humble and cordial with others, even praising other Hashira (such as Muichiro Tokito and Kyojuro Rengoku).
- While he is mostly serious throughout the series, he does have some comical moments to lighten the mood, such as his constantly shedding tears and his fondness for cats.
Background[]
- He first started out being a temple priest who raised and took in orphans who don't have parents.
- When Kaigaku disobeyed the temple rules and let in a demon to hide his tracks, everyone was killed by it except Sayo, who was saved by Gyomei, with the monk bashing the demon under the instinct of protecting Sayo with his fists until the sun rose and burned the demon. However, upon Sayo witnessing it and misunderstanding, people thought Gyomei "murdered" everyone and was then accused of a crime he didn't commit until Kagaya saved him.
- This tragically also led to him having a low opinion and paranoia towards the youth since then until Tanjiro came in. That being said, he never held any hatred towards the youth and is still shown to be kind to them. He also bear no grudge towards Sayo as he clearly understands that Sayo was young and traumatized for what she witnessed.
- He saved the Kocho sisters, Kanae and Shinobu, from a demon after their parents were killed. He was reluctant to take them in at first, but he inspired them and decided to allow them to become Slayers in the corps. This also led to Shinobu becoming a future key player in Muzan's defeat, which could not have happened if it wasn't for Gyomei's fortunate rescue.
- When Sanemi Shinazugawa insulted Kagaya and accused him of happily sending corps members to their deaths, Gyomei angrily warned Sanemi to not insult the master. Following the meeting, he, Kanae, and Tengen gave Sanemi a lecture for his hurtful and derogatory comments about Kagaya.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba[]
- While he did protest against Tanjiro upon breaking one of the Corps' rules regarding demons, it wasn't out of aggression or hostility, unlike how the other Hashira, minus Rengoku and Mitsuri, acted towards Tanjiro and Nezuko, even though it took a while for him to warm up to the latter.
- Has been helping Genya Shinazugawa with his training, despite knowing that the latter eats demons to gain their abilities.
- When he learned of Kyojuro's demise, he paid his respects to the fallen Flame Hashira.
- He prevented Sanemi from causing a pointless fight with Giyu, demanding the two sit down and listen to his suggestion.
- After learning about the Demon Slayer Mark, Gyomei proposed the Hashira Training, which would involve giving the corps members intense training to increase their strength and try to get the Hashira to unlock their mark.
- Gyomei knew he would likely die from the Demon Slayer Mark's curse due to his age but still chose to take steps to obtain it, showcasing his value of defeating Muzan Kibutsuji over his own life.
- He has trained Tanjiro and the rest of his trainee batches to perform intense exercises of meditating on a waterfall, carrying logs over their backs, and pushing aside boulders with more force from a nearby village. Despite how extremely intense it seemed, he never acted out of strictness but sincerely wanted them to grow stronger. A good example is when he overheard Tanjiro and Genya speaking about the chant he does.
- He then rehydrated Tanjiro by pouring water in his mouth after he was done and congratulated him for his training and past actions within the Swordsmith Village.
- After Nezuko (presumably) sacrificed her life to make sure Hantengu was defeated and Gyomei praised Tanjiro on the supposed plan, he also accepted Nezuko as a Demon Slayer after it was revealed she survived and it was Nezuko's idea in the first place.
- Upon being impressed with Tanjiro's honesty, he finally decides to open up with him once more and states to Tanjiro that he accepts him and is proud of what he has accomplished, thus subverting his low opinion towards children.
- He fought and defeated the Upper One Demon Kokushibo, alongside Sanemi, when Genya and Muichiro were down.
- When Kokushibo stated it is a pity that Gyomei will die soon due to his Demon Slayer Mark appearing and his techniques will be lost, Gyomei says that the Demon Slayers (especially Hashira) take pride from living and dying as humans.
- He paid his respects to the fallen Muichiro and closed the latter's eyes in peace.
- When Sanemi was mourning Genya after he died, Gyomei pleaded with him not to mourn yet, as they still have to defeat Muzan in order to ensure Genya and Muichiro's deaths weren't for nothing. While he interrupted him, it wasn't intentional, as he wanted to comfort Sanemi and let him know it would only allow Genya's death to be in vain.
- Despite arriving late during the final battle, he protected and saved Mitsuri Kanroji from one of Muzan's attacks.
- He, alongside Giyu, Obanai, Mitsuri, Sanemi, and the rest of their allies, fought hard to defeat Muzan Kibutsuji and put an end to his reign once and for all until daylight came by.
- During the fight, he fought his hardest to render Muzan's attacks useless, and when the sun came in, he helped his fellow slayers with restraining the latter when he was about to escape and succeeded as Muzan died.
- Upon his following death and seeing the children he raised in the afterlife, they apologized for not being able to protect him. Upon understanding this, he also apologizes for not being able to protect them as he joins them in the afterlife.
- He was one of the people in the afterlife alongside the other deceased Hashira to save Tanjiro from Muzan's corruption of him while his body was being cured by Kanao, ending Muzan's legacy and terror for good before being reincarnated for their heroic deeds.
Trivia[]
- He is one of the three Hashira in the series to be Pure Good.
- He is also the only Pure Good Hashira who prefers to be serious, never to darken the story and mood.
