Hershel Greene is a major protagonist in the AMC TV Series The Walking Dead, appearing in Seasons 2, 3, and 4 as a major character. He was the owner of the Greene Farm and the father of Beth and Maggie Greene, who met the Atlanta group after his ranch hand Otis accidentally shot Carl. He was also one of the members of the Prison Council alongside Glenn, Sasha, Daryl, and Michonne, and was murdered by the Governor during the latter's attack on the prison.
He was portrayed by the late Scott Wilson.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- Despite the series nature of moral ambiguity among the vast majority of the characters in not only the TV Series but the franchise as well over the hardships of the difficult decisions on the characters throughout it, Hershel manages to make himself clear cut on maintaining his incorruptible status, regardless of the stories difficulty in making it so.
- Is one of the most kind and supportive characters in Rick's group, as he always thinks of other people's lives more than his own.
- While he had several corrupting factors in Season 2, as he was bossy, arrogant, and even delusional, by the time of Season 3, Hershel lost all of his corrupting qualities, becoming far kinder than he was before.
- Even though he's loyal to Rick, he still is not above questioning his methods and refuses to partake in his morally questionable acts.
Past[]
- He decided to stop drinking to make sure he would be a better father to his children than his was.
- He became a veterinarian because of how much he loved animals and wanted to take care of them.
Season 2[]
- He took care of Carl Grimes after he was accidentaly shot by his ranch hand Otis.
- He comforted Rick and told him that he would do his best to save Carl's life.
- After Otis died while he and Shane went to get medicine to save Carl, he comforted Otis' wife Patricia.
- He honored Otis by making a funeral for him, and thanked him for what Otis did for him and Carl and appreatiated his selfessness.
- He refused to allow Rick to go on a mission as he lost too much blood while taking taking care of Carl.
- He took care of Daryl's injuries after he was shot by Andrea.
- Alongside the other members of the group, he helped in saving Beth from her zombified mother.
- He helped in saving Randall despite the latter trying to kill him, Rick, and Glenn.
- Even though he didn't like what Shane did, he still forgave him and allowed him to stay in the farm.
- He took care of Beth after she tried to commit suicide.
- While he stayed neutral about Randall's fate, this was because he was unsure what were the best decisions at that time and trusted Rick to do what was right, and after Rick decided to spare him, Hershel was okay with keeping Randall alive and allowing him to stay in the farm for the winter.
- He told Rick to leave with Carl while he stayed to find the rest of the group in order to keep Carl safe.
Season 3[]
- He took care of Lori when she was pregnant, and told her to not let her fear control her.
- After Judith was born and Lori died, he took care of the former and comforted Carl over the latter's death.
- He went to comfort Rick after Lori died and he went insane.
- He took care of Michonne's gunshot wound after she went to the prison.
- When Tyreese's group came to the prison, Hershel took care of Ben's wounds.
- After Glenn and Maggie came back from Woodburry, Hershel took care of the former's injuries.
- He tried to convince Rick to allow Tyreese's group to stay in the prison.
- He convinced Glenn to stop his plan to go to Woodburry to assassinate the Governor with Michonne.
- He was able to convince Rick to stay and take care of the group after the Governor attacked the prison, and while he did yell at Rick, this was understandable as Rick was about to leave the group when they needed him the most.
- He stopped a fight between Martinez and Daryl.
- He bonded with Milton despite them barely knowing each other and Milton being on the Governor's side.
- He refused to join Rick in his plan to give Michonne to the Governor.
- He tried to stop Rick when he thought he was going to sell Michonne to the Governor.
- He welcomed the Woodburry refugees when they came to the prison.
Season 4[]
- He tried to convince Rick to stop going out on runs and instead spend time with Carl, as Hershel believed that Carl needed to be taught by his father, since Carl once killed a soldier of Woodburry who was surrendering.
- He told Rick to have a gun every time he leaves the prison so he could be safe from walkers and other threats.
- He comforted Rick over what happened with Clara.
- After Rick had a fight with Tyreese, Hershel took care of Rick's wounds, and told him to not give up on the group.
- He made a map to an animal hospital facility so the group would be able to get supplies to save the prison from the flu.
- He went out of the prison to get elderberries to help the people that were infected by a flu in the prison.
- He took care of the people infected by the flu in the prison.
- He tried to comfort Caleb when he lost hope about his chances of survival.
- He revived Sasha when she passed out.
- He saved Lizzie when she was about to get killed by a walker, and decided to kill the walkers that were in the prison in the place where the children wouldn't be able to see him so they wouldn't see any violence.
- He used a breathing tube to save Glenn's life.
- He tried to stop the Governor's attack on the prison and gave him a chance to change, although the Governor refused.
- In his final moments, he was happy that there could be a chance for peace between the people in the prison and the Governor's group, although the Governor refused his chances of peace and redemption and killed Hershel.
