He was a born leader, charismatic, strong, handsome, the best at everything, swordfighting, wrestling, insults, chess-playing, the lot.
~ Excelinor the Witch describing Hiccup II

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock II is the posthumous overarching protagonist of the How to Train Your Dragon novels. He was the son of Grimbeard the Ghastly and was also a runt, resulting in his abandonment and adoption by a dragon family. He was a preacher for peace between dragonkind and mankind and his death directly lead to the entirety of the novels.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

  • Hiccup II was one of the three sons of Grimbeard the Ghastly, who abandoned him on a mountainside due to seeing him as unfit and useless. Hiccup was then found by Grimler dragons who took him in as one of their own and trained him in the ways of their kind. He eventually grew to have a strong enough bond with the dragons for them to trust him with their lives, which caused him to become Grimbeard's favorite son upon their reunion.
  • After reuniting with his father, he shows no ill will towards him for abandoning him and openly works to build a better relationship with him, showing his forgiving nature.
  • In an attempt to show Grimbeard the truth about dragons and end his father's brutal campaign against dragonkind, he organized a peaceful dragon protest. However Hiccup's brother Thugheart who had grown jealous of his father's newfound favoritism, lied to Grimbeard about the Dragons having violent and murderous intentions towards their tribe, which led him to lead an attack.
  • Hiccup was killed upon his arrival by his own father, his death left a bloodstain on the throne that remained for generations. In spite of this, in his dying moments, he concinced his Dragon Blood Brother Furious to not kill Grimbeard, showing he still had care for his father.
  • However by this point, Grimbeard realized he was tricked and realizing the truth of Hiccup II's intentions caused Grimbeard to be overwhelmed by grief, banishing Thugheart and dissolving the Kingdom of the Wilderwest, and as such Hiccup posthumously succeeded in his goal of redeeming his father and ending his hunting spree, saving the lives of thousands of Dragons across the world.
  • Hiccup II's death is what then became the direct cause of the rest of the franchise. His death sparked the end of the Kingdom of the Wilderwest, and caused his father to hide the King's Lost Things throughout the Barbaric Archipelago so that one day, a man worthy of the title could become the new King of the Wilderwest and bring about an era of peace.
  • At some point before his demise, Hiccup wrote a book titled "A Hero's Guide to Deadly Dragons" which was later found by Hiccup III, causing him to realize that Stoick had lied when he said that Horrendous Haddocks don't write books.
  • The book helped III learn a lot more about dragons, which saved his life several times. Later during Hiccup III's imprisonment on Berserk, Excellinor told him Hiccup II's life story, which inspired Hiccup III for the remaining novels in his goal to save dragons from the greed of mankind.
  • His words and ideals were used by Hiccup III to reach out to Furious and convince him to redeem himself in honor of his late Dragon Blood Brother.
  • Despite not being actively present in the franchise (as he has long since died during the time period it takes place in), he's portrayed as a generally kind hearted individual and noble leader with a fascination for Dragons and who wished to establish peace within the archipielago.
  • While he doesn't stand out as much as I does, he's still able to pass the standard because of his influence on the world. It was because of his ideals that Grimbeard redeemed himself and put a stop to his mass pillaging and killing of dragons across the world and he also serves as a vital source of inspiration for III throughout all his acts in the novels, especially regarding his value as a runt and that being a "Hiccup" doesn't mean being weak.
