This article pertains to a Pure Good with more than one version who is Pure Good!

We do not have to depend on slave and dragon labor. We are Vikings. We can stand on our own two feet. We don't have to stand by and let history just happen to us. We can take charge of our own fortune; we can improve our own futures and stop this war before it starts. Free the dragons!
~ Hiccup declaring his vision of peace after winning the trials to become King
I promise by this Mark upon my forehead, that I will strive throughout my life to build a new world, a better world, a world worthy of both our species. Not our species as they are, but as they could be.
~ Hiccup rebrands the Slavemark as the Dragonmark

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is the main protagonist of the How to Train Your Dragon novels written by Cresinda Cowell which regard a medieval world populated by Vikings that have learned to ride and train dragons. The Novels would later inspire the well known film franchise by DreamWorks.

He is the son of Stoick the Vast and the heir of the Hairy Hooligan tribe who is often looked down upon for not being as physically strong as most Vikings. He's often bullied by his cousin Snotlout who spent his time trying to kill him to take the throne.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

In General[]

  • Much like his DreamWorks version, Hiccup is a kind and noble individual who wishes to probe himself to his father and tribe with an altruistic desire to help others, both human and dragon, wiling to see the good in everyone and being regarded by others as the chosen one who will unite the archipielago in lasting peace.
  • While he is more lethal than his other versions, he has only ever killed dragons in self-defense, and only after it was made clear that said dragons were acting out of desire to kill instead of survival instincts (e.j: The Green Death).
  • Hiccup himself is the one who sets up the admirable standard, which is much lower than the films, with only Camicazi, Fishlegs, Snotlout and a few others acting as heroic characters, not to mention Hiccup is directly responsible for most of the other vikings' heroic deeds.
  • While he does have to compete with his namesakes, Hiccup stands out for being the one that finally established lasting peace in the Archipielago and making a utopia for dragons and vikings as well as beggining the slow separation of the two species to ensure peace for future generations.

Background[]

  • Hiccup has always been a kind individual, even as a child when a huge storm left him and several other vikings lost at sea, he gained the confidence to lead when all the adults got seasick, using his navigational skills to lead them all back home safely even though they'd all refused to help him when he himself got seasick.
  • Despite being abused, ignored and outcasted by pretty much everyone in his tribe, being branded as "Hiccup the Useless", he never held a grudge against the vikings who mistreated him and honsetly sought to prove himself as a valuable warrior, in line with his ideology that all lives are equal.

Novels[]

  • During his initiation into the Hairy Hooligan Tribe, while he and the rest of Gobber's class were sent to choose their Dragons in the Wild Dragon Cliff, after Fishlegs accidentally woke up all the dragons from their slumber, Hiccup gives Fishlegs his own dragon and makes time for all the others to flee as he goes back for his own dragon: Toothless.
  • Hiccup then spends months training Toothless in a more kind manner than the other vikings, learning Dragonese just to speak to him instead of mindlessly yelling like the others.
  • When Toothless became jealous of Snotlout's dragon Fireworm and initiated a fight between the dragons that would get the entire class of boys banished from Berk. Hiccup argued against his father for this, stating that the laws were more important than his son, but to no avail.
  • However the night before the boys were to leave in exile. the Green Death and the Purple Death arrived on the island, with Hiccup going to meet them as he was the only one who could speak Dragonese, and discovering their intentions to eat everyone, leading him to hatch a plan where he and the banished boys trick the two dragons into fighting each other, causing the death of the dragons and the safety of the vikings, and as a result, the banished were accepted back into the tribe.
  • When Alvin sieges the Hooligans after their trip to Skullios and states that he most kill and eat the heir as per Outcast believes (which at this point is believed to be Snotlout), Hiccup accepts his role as the heir for the first time to ensure the safety of his people and his cousin, even though he's been trying to kill him for a while.
  • Later when the ship sinks and he and Alvin find themselves sucked down to a cavern with Grimbeard's treasure, he manages to fight Alvin head on until a Strangulator dragon eats him.
  • He then takes out the dragon in self-defense and, deciding that the world is not ready for Grimbeard's treasure, has Toothless seal the cavern shut forever to ensure no more greedy vikings or pirates wage wars for it.
  • When he and Fishlegs get lost at sea and Fishlegs incidentally boards a Roman ship led by Alvin, Hiccup goes on to rescue him and the two escape while rescuing a dragon named Ziggerastica, though Toothless is captured. Alvin then sieges Berk and takes Hiccup and Fishlegs (unsure of who's the heir) and locks them up with Camicazi, the heir to the Bog Burglars, tricking the two tribes into war.
  • He then asks Ziggerastica for the favor that the dragon owed, saving himself and the other kids from being eaten by Sharkworms and then asking the nanodragons to help him fly, pretending to be Thor so the Romans do as he says, succesfully making them release all the captured dragons and humans, cast out Alvin and prevent a war between two tribes.
  • When Fishlegs gets sick with Vorpentitis and begins dying, Hiccup and Camicazi head to the leand of America agaisnt Stoick's orders and convince One-Eye to take them there as a cure would benefit dragons and humans alike.
  • Arriving on Hysteria, Hiccup tries to reach a peaceful resolution with Norbert but upon being locked up and saved by Toothless and Camicazi, they steal the vegetable needed for the cure, with Hiccup fighting the Hysterians off and convincing Norbert to leave them by pulling an arrow out of the frozen potato, which in ancient prophecy means Hiccup is destined to rule all viking lands and bring peace.
    • It was later revealed that Hiccup himself was the one who had the sickness, not Fishlegs, meaning he did all this for his friend while slowly dying.
  • He saved the archipielago from being consumed by a volcanic explosion, taking back the Firestone taken by Stoick to the volcano which would allow the birth of the Great Fire Dragon which would eat all the Lava and prevent it from flowing out into civilization, as well as redeeming Humongously Hotshot in the process by exposing Alvin's lies to him and helping the misguided viking become a hero again.
  • Upon discovering the Northern Wanderers as slaves in Norbert's ship, he promises to free them, using dragonnip to make the whole crew fall asleep and sneak out with the Wanderers, later in exchange to allow himself and Camicazi return home, Hiccup agreed to let the Wanderers brand him with the Slavemark, forcing him to wear his helmet forever to hide it.
  • Once it was discovered that Fishlegs was sending love letters to Princess Tantrum, and was given a death sentence as a commoner writing love letters to a heir was unacceptable, Hiccup took the blame and prepared to go on a quest to earn her hand.
  • When an angry Fishlegs went to Berserker Island to complete the quest himself, Hiccup still followed to make sure his friend survived. When he becomes a prisioner there, he is willing to put aside his differences with Alvin for the two of them to work together, only to be locked in with a Witch, who she then tricks into healing Toothless who was become sick for eating a magnet and several metal items.
  • After being told of Hiccup II by the witch, who is revealed to be Alvin's mother, Hiccup escapes and finds Camicazi, releasing her as well using the Hysterian key that Toothless ate which can open any lock.
  • Upon encountering his blood brother Furious, he frees him from his imprisonment in Berserker Island in exchange for lasting peace, however he's then betrayed as Furious gives him one year of peace before he assembles a Dragon Army and comes back to destroy all of humanity.

Dragon War[]

  • When Excellinor returns and reveals the prophecy for the future King of the Wilderwest for them to arise and defeat Furious' coming dragon army, and fix the world which appears to have been cursed with rabid dragons and active storms, Hiccup who already has almost all of the things the King had in the prophecy, sets out for the remainder three to defeat Furious.
  • He finds Hiccup I's dragon Wodensfang guarding his crown, who then gives him the location of the Dragon Jewel which he can use to unite all tribes.
  • Hiccup then returns and wins the competition to become King, defeating even Alvin and Stoick in the process before declaring to the viking tribes that he wishes to end slavery of both dragons and humans.
  • When at the last minute, Snotlout reveals his Slavemark, resulting in Hiccup being banished and Stoick taken out, he sets out by himself with no support other than three dragons to find the Dragon Jewel so he can defeat Alvin who was become the new King, end the Dragon War between Alvin, the vikings and Furious' dragon army and finally bring peace.
  • He convinces his mother Valhallarama to redeem herself and rally all the slaves and slavers as one against Alvin under Hiccup, who has obtained the Dragon Jewel from the mirror labyrinth after defeating a the Merciless dragon in the Ambersand and freeing Fishlegs, reuniting him with the three-headed dragon that his mother wanted to take care of him.
  • He rebrands the Slavemark into the Dragonmark as a sign of union and freedom, giving back freedom to millions of slave and establishing a bright future of equality for mankind.
  • After finding Snotlout dying and surrounded by Furious' dragons, Hiccup convinces the others to save him, leading to Snotlout reedeming himself and joining Hiccup's rebellion, later changing clothes with him to provide a diversion for Hiccup, in which Snotlout is killed while allowing his cousin to get away, a sacrifice Hiccup would remember even decades later.
  • After arriving at Tommorrow with his companions, he enters Grimbeard's castle just as Alvin is about to become King of the Wilderwest and upon regaining his memories, he convinces the Druid Guardians to make him king instead, calling off the war and preparing to fight Furious himself to ensure the safety of all vikings.
  • After fighting Furious without the Dragon Jewel's power as it was revealed as a fake, being nearly defeated, he remembers Furious' speech and realizes that the necklace Fishlegs gave him once belonged to Grimbeard, cracking it open to find the real Dragon Jewel which he uses to establish an agreement with Furious before throwing the Jewel into the sea so no one would abuse it's power.
  • When Alvin attacks Furious, breaking the agreement and leading to all out war between vikings and dragons, Hiccup calms Furious down, leading to him redeeming himself and saving Hiccup from being killed by Excellinor, taking a hit from the poisoned Stormblade and leaving Luna in charge of the Dragon Army as a peace offering to Hiccup before going out to die at sea.

Epilogue[]

  • Afterwards, he succeded in founding a harmonious kingdom in Tomorrow where dragons and humans coexisted, with Hiccup having vikings use more and more domestic animals to no longer rely on dragons as part of his plan for a back-up peace treaty which stated that: "If human nature didn't change quickly enough to ensure the dragons' safety after Hiccup's death, the entire population of dragons would go into hibernation, hidden deep under the sea."
  • As he grew old, Hiccup also had the bards plant the idea that dragons never existed and were just myths to ensure that this peace would last long after his death.

Trivia[]

  • While Hiccup III clearly served as the inspiration for the film version, said counterpart has much more similarities with Hiccup I's storyline in the novels.
  • Every official version of Hiccup Haddock is considered Pure Good.
