| “ | I was so afraid of becoming my dad, mostly because I thought I never could. How do you become someone that great, that brave, that selfless? I guess you could only try. A chief protects his own. We're going back. | „ |

| “ | You're right, bud, it's time. I was so busy fighting for a world that I wanted, I didn't stop and think about what you needed. You've looked after us long enough, time to look after yourselves. | „ |

| “ | There were dragons when I was a boy. There were great, grim, sky dragons that nested on the cliff-tops like gigantic, scary birds. Little brown, scuttling dragons that hunted down the mice and rats in well-organized packs. Preposterously huge sea dragons that were 20 times as big as the big blue whale. Some say that the dragons retreated back into the seas leaving not a bone, nor a fang, for men to remember them by. Others say they were nothing but folktales, to begin with… uh, I'm okay with that. Legend says that when the ground quakes, or lava spews from the earth, it’s the dragons, letting us know they’re still here, waiting for us to figure out how to get along. Yes, the world believes the dragons are gone, if they ever existed at all. But we Berkians, we know otherwise. And we’ll guard this secret until the time comes when dragons can return in peace. | „ |
| ~ Hiccup regarding the Dragons' depart to the Hidden World |
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is one of the two titular main protagonists (alongside Toothless) of DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon franchise.
Though initially wanting to be a Viking who slew dragons, after sparing a Night Fury and bonding with the dragon, he realized dragons were not dangerous creatures and became determined to have humans coexist with dragons. After the death of his father, he became the chief of Berk and protected his village from any foes that threatened his home. He is also the ancestor of Tom Kullersen.
He is voiced by Jay Baruchel, who also portrayed Dave Stutler in The Sorcerer's Apprentice. In the Korean dub of How to Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge, he’s voiced by Shin Yong-woo, who also voiced Kagaya Ubuyashiki in the television version of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- He wants humans and dragons to coexist.
- He is fiercely protective of his family, friends, and tribe.
- He always uses diplomacy as a first resort, and only uses violence when absolutely necessary.
- While he has his moments of wrath, it's always for justified reasons.
- While he and the dragon riders kill most of their enemies (berserker tribe, Dragons Hunters, Warlords army), like by blasting them with blasts of their dragons or sinking their ships or throwing dragons flyers from their singetails which causes them to die from drowning, he only does it to save the dragons or other people and out of self defence, and also is willing to spare them if they retreat or surrender which makes him righteous lethal.
How to Train Your Dragon[]
- Growing up, Hiccup was filled with anger for being a laughing stock to his peers, resulting in him vowing to get revenge once he became chief. But his father reminded him that a leader doesn't seek revenge, and makes decisions best for the tribe, no matter how painful those decisions might be. Hiccup chose to let go of his anger and became humble to even Snotlout who often makes fun of him.
- At the start of the film, he just wanted to help and be accepted as a true Viking of his village. He was also tired of being disrespected and looked down on by everyone, including his own father. He only wanted to kill a dragon because it would earn him respect from everyone.
- He later leaves his home secretly to find the downed Night Fury and after finding it incapacitated and preparing to kill it, he realizes he can't bring himself to and choses to set him free, in spite of knowing it could attack or kill him, though the dragon let him go after a menacing roar.
- The encounter caused Hiccup to realize he didn't really want to kill dragons, though his father had decided to put him in the Trial of Flame to fight Dragons, which he tried to shoot down but ultimately couldn't.
- In Dragon training, he remained relatively amicable towards the other teens despite their clear animosity towards him, especially Astrid and Snotlout.
- After being almost killed by a Gronkle and saved by Gobber with the warning that dragons always shoot to kill, He returned to the cove and found the Night Fury, realizing he had shot out one of his fins and left it incapacitated and unable to fly.
- He decided to find the Night Fury again, naming it Toothless, studying him and attempting to bond with the dragon. After some time and challenges, Hiccup managed to successfully gain the dragon's trust.
- He helped Toothless by crafting him a prosthetic tail, allowing him to fly again, while also feeding him and keeping him healthy while he was hurt.
- He didn't mean to lie to everyone or his father in regards to his dragon training tactics. He just never told everyone what really happened while the villagers told his father their side. He was going to confess to his father but after realizing that his father was really proud of him, he just didn't tell him.
- He attempted to reason with Astrid when she discovered his secret and get her to see that dragons weren't horrible creatures.
- Upon learning of the dragons’ nest, Hiccup chose to keep it a secret in order to defend Toothless.
- When forced to kill Hookfang in front of the village to prove his worth, Hiccup refused to kill the dragon and instead attempted to place his hand on the dragon to show all the Vikings that dragons weren't inherently violent, and he would have succeeded if Stoick didn’t act impulsively and end up riling the dragon up.
- When Toothless nearly killed Stoick, Hiccup stopped him at the last second and saved his father's life. Then, when Toothless was bound and locked up, Hiccup pleaded with his father to not hurt his dragon, willing to take any punishment but asks that Toothless not be harmed. He then tries to explain the reason of why the dragons are attacking the village but this causes Stoick to realize he's been to the nest and demand it's location, with Hiccup saying only a dragon can find the island.
- Realizing what Stoick is going to make toothless find the nest, he tries to stop him but Stoick throws him back and selfishly disowns him, but the latter immediatly regretted that.
- He saved the lives of all the Vikings who were about to be killed by the Red Death.
- He forgave his father for all the years of mistreatment and neglect he endured.
- He single-handedly fought against the Red Death with Toothless and successfully killed it, saving the lives of the Vikings and freeing all the dragons who were forced to serve the queen dragon.
- Though he did kill the Red Death, it was only done to save the lives of the Vikings and Toothless. Plus the Red Death was a heartless dragon who cared for nothing but herself and Hiccup never bragged about killing her when he mentioned her.
- He successfully brought an era of change to Berk, changing his father and everyone else on Berk by getting them to accept dragons.
Legend of the Boneknapper[]
- While at first no one believed Gobber about the Boneknapper, Hiccup convinced the other to go with him. The only reason why Hiccup stopped believing Gobber was because Gobber’s ridiculous stories and lack of details about all of his encounters with the Boneknapper that involved a dead frozen Viking punching him in the face, encountering a Hammerhead Whale and Yak, and being saved by Thor himself. When the Boneknapper turned out to be real, Hiccup realized the Boneknapper was after Gobber's belt buckle because it had a bone piece that prevents it from using its Thundering Roar. As a result, he beckoned Gobber to give the Boneknapper its bone to save his skin, which led to Gobber befriending the dragon.
Dragons: Riders of Berk[]
- He remained humble to both his friends and enemies, which resulted in most of them redeeming themselves and helping him fight greater foes and earn his respect.
- In the episode Thawfest, while Hiccup does show an unlikable and hyper-competitive side with Snotlout, this was due to all of the bullying and cheating Hiccup put up with from him with in the past. Plus, Hiccup shreds this factor later on and lets Snotlout win, returning to his humble self.
- He helped Toothless defeat his arch-nemesis and told Toothless to spare the Whispering Death, despite the dragon almost killing him several times.
Dragons: Defenders of Berk[]
- While he did trap a Skrill in ice glaciers, this was due to having no choice due to the other choice being to have Dagur (who was his enemy at the time) take him. When he encountered the Skrill again, he let it go.
- While he did recklessly get the other Vikings endangered to find a lost treasure, this was due to the fact he mistakenly believed that Stoick still does not accept him (as the picture had him more muscular and Mulch indirectly made it worse by saying the portrait is how a chief's son should look like and Stoick seems to like him better that way), which causes him to lead the other Vikings on a potentially dangerous treasure hunt to prove himself.
- While he, Snotlout, and the twins did leave Thor's metal statue at Mildews' house, he did this because his father wanted it put on the highest part of Berk (which unsurprisingly, the highest point on the island, from the other teens' perspective, is located in the same spot as Mildews' house). Also Hiccup was the only one who didn't want to leave it with Mildew due to the fact Mildew had tried to exile Toothless. Plus from what happened it seems that Snotlout and the Twins dropped it there because Toothless couldn't lift things by himself.
- Although he temporarily kicked Snotlout out of the academy for disobeying orders, this was justified as Snotlout's recklessness almost got Astrid killed and he didn't even apologize for his behavior. Plus Hiccup (and the other riders) had to put up with Snotlout's unbearable behavior all the time which got them into trouble (Fishlegs, the Twins, and Astrid were equally disgusted by Snotlout's ego as it almost killed them). Hiccup made it clear that while he didn't want to expel Snotlout from the academy forever, he doesn't want to lose the respect of his teammates (a thing that the twins point out he runs the risk of doing). After realizing Alvin and Stoick had this problem when they were young, Hiccup later allowed Snotlout back into the academy.
- He only locked Hookfang in his pen to prevent the twins from taking ownership of him since Snotlout broke the rules again which almost got himself and Hookfang killed, as well as indirectly leading the Screaming Death into coming back. Hiccup was going to work something out with Snotlout until he realized he learned his lesson to tone his ego down. In addition he also apologized to Hookfang about locking him in his pen.
- He reunited the Screaming Death with its mother, allowing them to live in peace.
Dragons: Race to the Edge[]
- Despite being betrayed by Heather, Hiccup, along with Fishlegs still trusted and treated her as a friend.
- Despite not wanting to help the Gronckles get their sacred home back at first (due to the Catastrophic Quaken being big and scary, they would of likely been killed if they tried to fight it), Hiccup encourage Fishlegs to find another way instead of fighting the dragon (due to Snotlout training him to fight and Snotlout's ideas always end in disaster). In addition he and Astrid also went to save Snotlout and Fishlegs before the Catastrophic Quaken almost killed them and befriended it.
- He helped a Thunderdrum named Earspliter reunite with his child called Lil Lullaby who was in the Death Song's trap. Earsplitter happily reunited with his child and Hiccup suggested the two find a new home even though Thunderdrums can't hear.
- While the dragon riders repeatedly mention how "obsessed" Hiccup has become with beating Viggo, Hiccup never acts darker, out of character, or any more "obsessed" with this villain than he has with any others; there's nothing out of character, excessive, or unjustifiable about the level of determination he shows or effort he puts into fighting him. Making this more of a determination than a corrupting factor.
- Even if this was a corrupting factor, it was understandable at the very least due to everything Viggo has done, and even then, he never wanted Viggo to die in their final fight.
- He freed dragons from Viggo's business thus allowing them to live like equals instead of weapons.
- He felt remorse over losing Berk's gold and causing his people to have a financial crisis and eventually starve to death.
- He also saves dragons from other dragons such as when he saved a Scauldron from being eaten by a Submaripper, and later on he, along with Fishlegs and the gang, saved a Seashocker from a pod of Scaldrons.
- Although he did punch Snotlout in the face, this was only because Snotlout constantly provoked Hiccup into punching him, and unknown to Hiccup, it was well-intended as Snotlout was trying to help Hiccup get rid of Barf and Belch in his own way. Also, Hiccup didn't expect to actually hurt Snotlout.
- While he did let Krogan fall, this was due to Krogan attempting to buy Toothless at a dragon auction so he can be used as a slave for his master Drago. Krogan did survive and jumped to evade being captured by the Dragon Riders.
- He stopped his father Stoick from killing enemies out of rage and saving their lives to also help redeem them in a way.
- He helped redeem enemies like his former bully Dagur the Deranged, Mildew, Alvin the Treacherous, and Viggo Grimborn, despite them all trying to kill him or capture him to help control dragons. While he did have a hard time trusting them at first, this was for good reason as they normally betrayed him.
- After curing Astrid with the saliva of a Buffalord, Hiccup and the other Riders gave the boat's crew a Viking funeral to honor the fallen crew, but also to incinerate their bodies and prevent the plague called Scourge of Odin from spreading even further.
- While he was infuriated with Johann, this was justified as Hiccup suspected for months that Johann was a traitor and it turns out Hiccup was right.
- When the Frozen Skrill is taken back to the glacier, the Riders prepare to put it into a crevasse and seal it in. But when Hiccup saw the fear and sadness in its eyes, he recognizes that trapping the Skrill was no different than what the Hunters had done and decides set it free instead of freezing it up like last time. After a bowing to Hiccup and Toothless as a sign of gratitude, the Frozen Skrill flies off into the sky, enjoying it's freedom for the first time.
- Unlike the others (including Fishlegs) who express their lack of care to rescue Snotlout who got caught up in the violent thunderstorm, Hiccup expresses worry over Snotlout's safety and orders the Riders to begin their search for him.
- Despite initially being mad at him for his betrayal, Hiccup still tried to reason with Johann before the latter was frozen in ice. He also showed a bit of sadness and remorse, implying that he still cares or has some regret for the way things turned out between him and Johann.
How to Train Your Dragon 2[]
- When hearing of Drago Bludvist, his hatred of dragons, and the way he killed the previous chiefs who refused to join him, Hiccup still wanted to reason with Drago and end things peacefully.
- When learning his mother was alive and had stayed away from him for more than twenty years, Hiccup forgave her and understood why she chose to leave.
- As Drago attacked the dragon's nest, killing many dragons and having Valka's Bewilderbeast killed, Hiccup still spoke to Drago, not being offended by Drago's insults and trying to get him to see what dragons could be and the coexistence of the two species on Berk. He also felt sympathy toward Drago's backstory and despite the fact he was far, far past his excuse, he stilled tried to reason with him.
- Despite angrily pushing Toothless away after the latter killed Stoick while under the Bewilderbeast's control, it was understandable as his father was just killed but still foolish as he saw Drago posses Toothless with his own eyes, and even then he quickly understands right after pushing him away that it wasn't actually Toothless' fault as he wasn't in control of his actions, which makes him feel even worse, especially after not listening to his dad about Drago being a monster. He also immediately tries to run after Toothless and save him when Drago captures him but can't due to all the soldiers. Feeling immense guilt for blindly pushing him away when it was Drago's fault his dad is dead.
- He successfully broke Toothless free of the Alpha's control, forgiving him for killing Stoick and understanding it wasn't his fault.
- Even after having killed his father and terrorized his home, Hiccup still gave Drago the chance to surrender and to end things peacefully, and reluctantly agreed to have him eliminated and his Bewilderbeast defeated.
- Even though he had some corrupting qualities like being rebellious to his dad and his action of trying to reason with Drago which caused Stoick’s death, as well as preferring to be by himself and isolating himself from Berk, he matured out of these by the next movie by knowing better after encountering Grimmel and placing more care for his people after becoming chief.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World[]
- He defended Berk and its people from Grimmel the Grisly.
- When rescuing the dragons with his friends at the start of the film, he reassured one of the guards, whom he had accidentally scared after being mistaken for a demon, that he and his friends were just humans, although said guard didn't believe him.
- He tried to befriend the Light Fury despite the harsh treatment she gave him and also freed her from Grimmel's control. He also told her to save Toothless and ends up making peace with her after she saved him.
- While he was in Grimmel's trap, he tried to reason with Grimmel, but realized Grimmel was irredeemable like Drago.
- He tried to come up with a plan for Grimmel's Deathgrippers and give out his idea to Toothless, even though the latter was already about to electrocute them to death.
- He attempted to sacrifice himself when Grimmel dragged him down with him so the Light Fury can save Toothless, and though Grimmel was technically killed by Hiccup from a certain point of view, Hiccup only did it to save Toothless and the Light Fury as he was given no other choice at that point. Unknown to him, Hiccup actually avenged all the Night Furies and Toothless' family.
- He sent all the dragons in existence to the Hidden World to avoid attracting bigger threats for both Berk and the dragons themselves.
How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming[]
- In spite of the growing disdain towards dragons since they retreated to the Hidden World, he helped organize a historical play about how he and Toothless saved dragonkind, while adapting the play to have Stoick the Vast find Toothless, so that more people could remember his father's contributions to the Viking world.
- He and Astrid brought their children Zephyr and Nuffink Haddock to the Hidden World to reunite them with Toothless, the Light Fury and their Night Light children.
- Overall, his actions have allowed the Vikings and their descendants to remember the contributions dragons have brought to them, leading to the Kullersens spearheading the rediscovery of Dragons when a fissure opened another entrance to the Hidden World.
Dragons: The Nine Realms[]
- He builds a cage for Jörmungandr in the Dark Realm before Jormungandr destroys anything else including the dragons in the Hidden World.
- He manages to lure Jörmungandr into the cage and trapped it by using Valka's staff, making sure it can't hurt any other dragons or destroy the realms in the Hidden World.
- 1,300 years later, Tom Kullersen, the descendant of Hiccup and Astrid, reintroduced dragons to the modern world as friends and allies. But later, the dragons decided to hide from the humans again after the Hidden World was nearly destroyed by Dr. Wilma Sledkin and Jörmungandr, which was (indirectly) freed by Leonard "Buzzsaw" Burne before his redemption. After the events of Ragnarok Part 2, with Jörmungandr locked back up, Thunder became King of the Nine Realms, ICARIS shut down permanently, and the Dragons returned to the Hidden World. Knowing the world can't be trusted to know about the dragons existence yet, the Dragon Club dissolved but the riders all still keep in touch while their dragons also keep in touch with each other as well. Presumably someday the Dragons will return once the world is ready to trust them.
Trivia[]
- Hiccup is one of the Pure Good heroes that fought the most Pure Evil villains, having fought against five.
- Hiccup is technically considered the heroic/good version of Grimmel, serving as an example of what Grimmel could have become if he had desired to protect dragons rather than hunt them down.
- Likewise, Grimmel is an example of what Hiccup could have turned out to be. If he had killed Toothless instead of sparing him when they first met, he could have gone down the path of Pure Evil instead of Pure Good.
- Hiccup is technically considered the heroic/good version of Grimmel, serving as an example of what Grimmel could have become if he had desired to protect dragons rather than hunt them down.
- Every Official Version of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock is Pure Good.
