~ Hubie's catchphrase |
Hubie is the main protagonist of 1990s animated film The Pebble and the Penguin. He's an Adelie Penguin with red winter hat and yellow scarf around his neck. He has deep feelings for Marina and spends the film trying to find the perfect pebble for her. He also faces against his rival Drake, who also wants to be Marina's mate via a pebble to give to her.
He was voiced by Martin Short.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- While he was originally meek and rather cowardly, he later developed into a much more independent individual who was able to protect both himself and others.
- When Rocko tried to deal with the Killer Whales, Hubie tried to stop him from doing so even if it meant getting eaten by the killer whales and was devastated when he believed that Rocko had been killed in the attack.
- Unlike Drake, he has a genuine relationship with and feels for Marina.
- He doesn't hesitate to stand up for himself in spite of his timid nature. Such as when Drake threatened him to give him the pebble that was supposed to be for Marina, and he refused and finally stood up to Drake near the end of the film where he calls him a "Big Bully" after all that he put him and the other characters through.
- Whenever he makes a mistake, he feels remorse for it. As he apologized to Rocko for lying to him about a penguin named Waldo that Hubie had actually made up. And when he realized Rocko was getting annoyed after he droned on about his pebble and Marina for a long time, and he stopped and apologized to Rocko.
- He personally fought Drake fiercely in an attempt to rescue Marina, in spite of how powerful the former is that he could’ve easily overpowered him.
- He arrived in the nick of time before the ceremony took place, and successfully became Marina's mate, thus rescuing her from facing banishment from Antarctica for failing to choose a mate, or possibly dying from starvation, as Drake noted that Marina would only starve when she's banished.
Trivia[]
- He's one of the 8 Don Bluth heroes to be pure good, alongside Petra, Beany, Timmy, Mrs. Brisby, Justin, Nicodemus, and Fievel Mousekewitz. He (along with the bird kids) are also the only ones to not come from a movie with a Pure Evil villain.
- He and the three bird kids (Petra, Beany, and Timmy) are the Pure Goods in the film, and Hubie is the only character to be single, except for his friends helping him.
