Ian Dietrich is a supporting character in the Attack on Titan franchise. He was a high ranking member of the Garrison regiment who lead the operation to defend, evacuate and eventually retake Trost district.
He was voiced by Yūya Murakami in Japanese and Scott Freeman in English.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- Unlike many other soldiers in the series, Ian lacks any corrupting qualities like lethality, jerkishness or making morally questionable decisions.
- He is shown to deeply care about everyone under his command, showing clear distain when he has to risk their lives and does whatever he can to save them at any opportunity.
- Despite his limited screentime compared to other heroes, he uses it to its full extent. Every moment Ian is visible he is performing something admirable.
- When the Colossal Titan returned and breached Trost's gate, Ian helped to lead the evacuation efforts and defence of the city.
- He orders Mikasa Ackerman to join the rear guard and assist with protecting the evacuating civilians, this makes Ian indirectly responsible for her saving the evacuees from an abnormal and defusing the Dimo Reeves situation.
- When Mikasa argues that she's just a cadet and will slow them down, Ian retorts by saying that he didn't ask for her opinion and she should just follow orders. While this may initially seem jerkish, Ian was simply weighed down by the stress of the situation and needed all hands on deck to protect the evacuees, he also knew that Mikasa was capable enough to do so. He also treats her with nothing but respect from that point onwards.
- He helps to clean up the Titans surrounding the rear gate along with his comrades and Mikasa.
- Following the cleanup, Ian praises Mikasa for her bladework and skill, however he shows genuine concern when Mikasa shrugs him off and mentions how she dented her blades, he tries to ask what happened in her past to make her so nonchalant in the face of Titans, but drops the subject knowing that it's not his business
- During Eren Yeager's trial before the Garrison, when Mikasa steps up in Eren's defence, Ian is quick to speak up for her, praising her skills and mentioning how losing her would be a major blow to humanity, though Kitz shrugs off his concern.
- Following Armin's heartfelt speech to the soldiers, Ian once again speaks up against Woermann, but is rudely shut down.
- When placed in charge of the Alpha Squad during the mission to retake Trost, Ian is initially hesitant but goes on to accept his role as leader.
- He recruited Mikasa to the Alpha Squad, knowing how her skills will be valuable.
- When Eren loses control of his Titan once they reach the boulder, he warns Mikasa of an incoming attack and orders her to get back for her own safety.
- When Rico and Mitabi prepare to abandon the mission, Ian stops them and orders them to protect Eren until he can be safely recovered. Stating that Eren is irreplaceable. When Rico argues back Ian retorts by asking her if she knows any other way to defeat the Titans and that this is the only way to potentially guarantee humanity a victory. The other elites reluctantly agree and head off to fight the Titans.
- This action also calmed down Mikasa, who was enraged by the other elites decision to abandon Eren and was willing to hurt or possibly kill them.
- When Mikasa thanks him for his bravery, Ian retorts that there's no need for thanks, admitting that he was terrified of how Mikasa would have reacted otherwise. He then gives her permission to fight freely, knowing that it's the best use of her skills.
- As the battle raged on, one of the Garrison soldiers was grabbed by a Titan, however Ian was able to kill it before it can eat them.
- With the situation turning dire, Ian prepared to call a retreat, but fortunately Eren is able to wake up and lift the boulder, now in full control. Fully revitalised and determined, Ian gives the order to protect Eren at all costs, drawing the Titans out of his path in a last ditch effort to reclaim the city.
- Ian would notice Mitabi and his squad on the ground drawing the Titans away, concerned for his friend's safety however realising that it is the only way to gain their attention, Ian jumps down with the rest of his unit to join them.
- During the mission, Ian would spot another comrade who was about to be eaten by a Titan, without any hesitation Ian flew up to the Titan's mouth and pulled the comrade free, giving his life to save him and being eaten in his place.
- Ultimately Ian's mission was successful, as the wall was sealed and humanity had won it's first ever successful pushback against the Titans.
