~ Ishiro Serizawa's famous last words |
Dr. Ishiro Serizawa is the overarching protagonist of the MonsterVerse franchise.
He is a lead scientist of Monarch, an organization dedicated to observing and studying Titans. He is a close friend of Godzilla, often advocating on his behalf and later giving his life to empower Godzilla with the radiation from a nuclear bomb.
He was portrayed by Ken Watanabe.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- Though he spent much of his time at work at the expense of his wife and son, it was not done out of malice or neglect. Rather, it was done out of a misguided attempt to mimic his own father's parenting style and belief that it was for the best. He still loved his family very deeply, mourning the loss of her wife and visiting his son to try and comfort him about her death.
Background[]
- After his father died, he decided to join Monarch after having been offered a job by a member of the organization and a close friend of Serizawa's father.
- Despite being the head scientist of Monarch, he refuses to carry an official title in order to stand on an equal footing with everyone else in Monarch, demonstrating his humility.
Godzilla[]
- He reluctantly decided to have the male MUTO killed before he hatched due to the danger he would pose.
- He assists the U.S. military in tracking and locating the MUTOs. During the briefings, he insists that they allow Godzilla to defeat the two MUTOs instead of killing all three of the Titans with a nuclear warhead. His assertions would turn out to be correct, as the male MUTO would steal the warhead and take it to the female MUTO, who would use its radiation as fuel to hatch her eggs. Once this occurs, Admiral Stenz takes Serizawa's advice and has the military withdraw to allow Godzilla to defeat the two MUTOs.
- He tells the military where the female MUTO had likely laid her eggs and where she was keeping the warhead. This allows Brody to incinerate the eggs before they hatch and lets the rest of the military take the nuclear warhead out of the city before it detonates.
- When Godzilla is believed to have died, he solemnly looks at the fallen Titan. Then, once Godzilla awakens and leaves the city, Serizawa smiles with joy as the Titan he admires returns to his home.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters[]
- When Godzilla comes too close to Monarch's headquarters, Serizawa insists that Foster doesn't attack.
- He is horrified when Ghidorah kills Professor Graham, and mourns her death before resolving himself to stop Ghidorah.
- As Emma reveals her plan to awaken the Titans and create a new world order where humanity can co-exist with Titans, Serizawa scolds her for her recklessness and willingness to gamble with the lives of billions.
- He and the others in Monarch have the G-Team go to Isla de Mara to evacuate before Rodan is unleashed.
- He tries to insist to the military that they let Godzilla handle Ghidorah and not fire the Oxygen Destroyer. Like before, his advice would prove to be correct, since the Oxygen Destroyer had no effect on Ghidorah due to him being an alien, while Godzilla was critically injured. This would allow Ghidorah to become the new alpha Titan, awakening all the other Titans to try and terraform the world under his command.
- After Godzilla seemingly dies when Mark Russel deploys the oxygen destroyer in an attempt to kill both him and Ghidorah, he rightfully chastises Mark for allowing his unjust hatred of the former to cloud his judgement.
- Upon learning that Ghidorah is an alien, he is disgusted by this, viewing him as a false king with no right to take over a world he doesn't even come from.
- He volunteers to detonate a nuclear warhead near Godzilla to rejuvenate him and give him the energy he needs to fight Ghidorah. As he approaches the weakened Godzilla, he places a hand on his snout and says goodbye to his old friend before the warhead detonates, killing Serizawa in the process.
- Even after his death, his sacrifice allowed Godzilla to regain the energy he needed to defeat Ghidorah, putting an end to his reign of terror and allowing Godzilla to become the alpha Titan.
