~ Stern's famous line while giving Oskar Schindler his ring |
Itzhak Stern is the deuteragonist of the 1993 Steven Spielberg modern classic Schindler's List. He was the accountant and business partner of Oskar Schindler. While based on the real person of the same name, his role in the movie also acts as a composite for some other real people including Mietek Pemper, who worked as Amon Göth's assistant and as a spy for Schindler.
He is portrayed by Ben Kingsley.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- Before his encounter with Oskar Schindler, he worked in the Judenrat, a Jewish council that carried out orders from the regime and dealt with complaints from the population of Krakow to ensure that there wouldn't be conflict that could lead to the Jews getting into trouble with or killed by the SS.
- He was the first to recognize that Schindler's factory could be a heaven for the Jews residing in Krakow. When Schindler's business first started operating, he spread the word about it to his fellow Jews, telling many of them to get a Blauschine form so they'd be considered essential workers. He also forged several of the forms himself for the workers the Nazis wouldn't consider essential which included a teacher and a writer.
- During his time in the Krakow labor camp, he would have Schindler hire at-risk members who Amon had previously expressed a desire to kill. This included a Rabbi who had barely escaped execution on dumb luck and a child who was amongst a group of Jews accused of stealing a chicken, only surviving because he humored Amon by accusing an already dead man of the theft.
- He subtly convinced Schindler to employ Regina Perlman's parents by educating him on how much of a monster Amon Goeth truly was through a story of how Amon murdered 25 Jews out of anger after one escaped.
- While on the train to Emalia, he showed the children in his carriage how to use the icicles on its roof as a water supply.
- He was the one who ran Schindler's business, both before and after it was only a front to keep its workers alive, meaning he held partial responsibility in saving the 1,100 Jews it employed.
- Although he was initially quite cold towards Schindler during the movie's first half, this was understandable considering Schindler started out as a money-crazed individual willing to take advantage of the war and Jewish slave labor for profit. When Stern realized Schindler was truly a good person behind it all, the two became close friends and he was the one to personally give Schindler his ring on behalf of all the workers, telling Schindler he was responsible for generations still being alive, and he embraced him when Schindler broke down crying over not having been able to save more people.
