James Pleiades Hawkins is the main protagonist of Disney's 43rd full-length animated feature film Treasure Planet, an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island.
He was voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a teenager and the late Austin Majors as a little boy.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
Background/In General[]
- It is stated by his mother that he would always find stray pets and beg her to let him keep them, showing he was kind to animals.
- He is a very sympathetic character, with even John Silver feeling sorry for him after learning of his father's departure.
- Even when he went out in search of Captain Flint's treasure, he does it with the sole motivation of restoring his mother's Inn, showing he has no greed, like his original counterpart.
Treasure Planet[]
- He tends to a dying Billy Bones and helps him into the Inn despite meeting him for the first time and not knowing him.
- He warns his mother and Dr. Doppler when the pirates attacked the Inn.
- He also gives them the final push to jump into Doppler's carriage, only seconds after the inn burned down, so he saved their lives twice in this scene.
- He listens to Silver and Captain Amelia (with genuine loyalty to the latter after the mutiny) and takes his duties seriously.
- He starts to warm up to John Silver, which makes him responsible for his redemption.
- He saved Silver from falling overboard while securing the sails.
- He felt guilty over Mr. Arrow's death, even though he had nothing to do with it.
- He even would've saved his life just like the rope was meant to (as he made sure all lifelines were secured properly), if Scroop hadn't cut it.
- Like his original version, he has denounced John Silver and the crew after learning they are pirates. He revealed also their plot to Captain Amelia and Dr. Doppler.
- Per Captain Amelia's request, he goes back to the ship to retrieve the map that Morph had tricked him into leaving there.
- While he did kill Scroop by sending him floating into space, it was in self-defense. He even felt remorse for it, even though Scroop completely deserved it.
- This may have even saved some people from him, as if given the chance, Scroop would have very likely taken all the treasure for himself alone and killed anyone who got in his way.
- While B.E.N. did endanger him by fidgeting with the ship's artificial gravity and activating the ship's alarm (alerting Scroop to their presence), he held no grudge against him.
- He retrieved B.E.N.'s lost memory chip.
- He saved the entire crew from Treasure Planet's destruction by skating a provisional rocket board as a makeshift solar surfer towards the map's portal in order to have the ship sent elsewhere despite their villainy.
- This act was extremely brave as not only did he endanger himself, but he was also the one who had the plan in the first place.
- He forgives Silver for his villainy and allows him to escape after learning about his redemption.
- He allows Morph and B.E.N. to move in with him.
- He gives his part of the treasure to his mother so that she can open a new inn, just like he wanted from the beginning.
Trivia[]
- It is unknown if his original counterpart from the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson can be qualified as Pure Good or not.
- Ironically, Jim Hawkin's voice actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt would later on play as Rex Lewis/Cobra Commander from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, who is Pure Evil.
