Jimmy is the main protagonist of the 2010 short film The Candy Shop. He is a poor but still heroic boy who is trying to raise enough money to get his sick mother some treatment for her illness. However, Jimmy notices a mysterious candy store owner bringing little girls into his shop very often and becomes determined to find out what is going on after his best friend Nancy is taken by the shop owner.
He was portrayed by Mattie Liptak.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- Despite growing up poor, Jimmy never let that make him bitter and cynical towards others, and he treats everyone around him respectfully.
- He shows concern when a little girl is taken into a candy shop by a man who she didn't know but his boss just told him to get back to selling newspapers which Jimmy does to respect his boss.
- After his boss goes away, he gives some potatoes to his friend Nancy and her sister Sally for free just out of the kindness of his heart.
- When he is given some money by the candy shop owner, he initially doesn't want to take it despite his mother being ill, but the shop owner urges him so he could treat his mother's sickness, which convinces Jimmy to take it.
- He then uses the money to pay for a doctor for his ill mother.
- After he noticed Nancy being brought into the candy shop, he attempts to break into the candy shop and rescue her from the candy shop owner.
- When the candy shop owner tries to gaslight Jimmy into killing Nancy, saying that if he doesn't do it "what will happen to his mother", however, this doesn't work on Jimmy and he still refuses to kill Nancy which causes the owner to call him a "mere paperboy" and flip the lever to kill Nancy.
- After the owner attempts to kill Nancy, Jimmy attempts to stop him by jamming the machinery, causing the owner to try and kill him with a pipe, however Jimmy stayed behind and tried to stop Nancy from dying despite being told by the owner "that he wasn't the first one to try and stop him".
- While he did kill the owner, it was only out of self defense as the owner tried to strangle him to death and even remarked that Jimmy "is going to look great on a stick", and Jimmy took no pleasure in killing him.
- He saves Nancy's life by reversing her process of being turned into candy.
- He and Nancy then proceeded to reverse the effects of many other children to bring them back to life even if they could not save everyone.
- At the end of the short film, Jimmy and Nancy reunite the children with their parents but they also explain to the grieving parents that some of their children have been turned into candy and they couldn't save them unfortunately.
- Though he did angrily rip down a flyer for a new candy store that was completely unrelated to the incidents in the short film, this is an understandable reaction, considering the trauma the candy shop owner had put him through. Not to mention, he could have reacted far worse, such as trying to hurt the owner of the new candy store, making this a forgivable heating-up period.
- In a way, this also shows he hasn't let down his guard, and is still concerned about new dangers that could arise in town.
- While he is taken seriously, he never darkens the mood of the short film.
