Captain John Smith is the deuteragonist of Disney's 33rd full-length animated feature film Pocahontas, and the triagonist of its sequel Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World.
In the original film, he was voiced by Mel Gibson. In Journey to a New World, he was instead voiced by Donal Gibson.
What's Make Him Pure Good?[]
- He helps his Settlers and saves Thomas from drowning during journey.
- When he met Pocahontas, he felt someone is following him and prepares ambush to her, but he realizes she didn't mean any harm to him, so he explains that he meant no harm to her and teaches about his homeland and some words that she doesn't know.
- He apologizes to her for inadvertently calling her people savages (thanks to her, he changed his life)
- He helps his settlers with the wood wall around camp.
- He explains about gold to her, but she doesn't understand gold when he shows to her his coin, so he realizes there is no gold.
- He decides to back to his camp before his friends sent who settlers looking for him.
- He gave Thomas advise on shooting with rifle, to keep his both eyes open when he shoots, though this inadvertently makes him indirectly makes him responsible for Kocoum’s death.
- He tells his settlers and his friends that they don't fight the Indians, explaining to them that they know their lands and they can help them even have food.
- He protests to Governor Ratcliffe that there is no gold on the Indians’ land, which the settlers were shocked by, but Governor Ratcliffe won't listen to reason.
- He sneaks tonight to warn her that his friends are planning to attack her people, so Pocahontas tries to take him to talk to her Father.
- As Kocoum attacks him, he acts self-defense. After Thomas accident shot Kocoum, he stopped Pocahontas from attacking Thomas as he didn't mean to kill Kocoum because he was still young, so he took blame for Thomas so he can escape.
- He preferred to die than live without ever knowing Pocahontas
- He notices Ratcliffe planning to shoot at the Powhatan Chief so he can make war himself, so he sacrifices himself to shield Powhatan from getting shot, and the Settlers realize Smith was right along.
- He finally gains respect by Powhatan for saving his life, respecting Pocahontas’ path because her people need her more than himself.
Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World[]
- After his wound is healed, he had to fake his death, so Governer Ratcliffe would believe that he was dead, so he won't go after him.
- While wearing a black jacket and hoodie hiding in pubic, after he overhead that Pocahontas was going be executed after she went to England to reason with King, he going to back without hesitation.
- He has to team up with John Rolfe to rescue Pocahontas from the dungeon.
- After an argument between him and John Rolfe, he realizes Rolfe is in love with her.
- He decides to help her convince the King.
- He reveals himself in front of pubic and King, telling the truth that Governor Ratcliffe was lying to them, there is no gold, and he was using the King to start war against Indians.
- He and the others manage to stop the armada and defeat Governor Ratcliffe.
- He was excited to have a new ship and having his crew he hopes she joined him and, he respects Pocahontas’ choice that she finally found where she belongs, he encourages her and he hopes she'll find happiness before they went separate ways.

- Both of John's voice actors, Mel and Donal Gibson, are real-life brothers themselves.
