Johnny Smith is the protagonist of the Stephen King book The Dead Zone and its film adaptation. He is a schoolteacher who develops the power to see the future after a bad car accident which left him in a coma for years.

He was played by Christopher Walken.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

  • He uses his powers to help people despite being reluctant at first, alerting his nurse to a fire in her home and saving the lives of her two children (In the movie she only had one child).
  • He tells a woman whose son is about to have a serious operation that he's going to be okay.
  • He discovers that his doctor's mother, who he thought died in World War II, is still alive and tells him this.
  • He's understanding when he learns his ex-girlfriend Sarah has moved on from him and has a child with another man.
  • In the movie, upon making physical contact with a tabloid reporter, he calls out the reporter, who supposedly drove his sister to suicide.
  • He refuses to use his powers for personal gain or for dishonest reasons and just wants to go back to teaching.
  • He uses his powers to expose senior police deputy Frank Dodd as a notorious serial killer who had raped and murdered numerous women and young girls.
  • In the book, he warns his employer Roger Chatsworth about a deadly fire that will erupt at a restaurant where a high school graduation party is being held. Despite believing the fire won't happen, Chatsworth humors him and holds an alternate party at his home, making Johnny save numerous lives, including Chatsworth's son Chuck, while the students who accept the original invention at the restaurant and the manager die horribly.
  • In the movie he warns his employer Roger Stuart that his son Chris and two of his friends will drown after falling through thin ice during hockey practice, and though Stuart fires him, Chris believes the warning and stays home, although his two friends drown and eight other boys fall through the ice and are taken to the hospital to be treated for hypothermia, leaving Chris' father traumatized and in serious legal trouble with the other ten boys' families.
    • Also, when Johnny breaks a very expensive object to get Mr. Stuart's attention, he apologizes for destroying it, and upon touching Chris' hand, tells him he's going to be all right as he listens to him. When the incident happens anyway due to Roger lying about calling off the hockey practice, Johnny calls the house to see if Chris is alive and is relieved upon hearing his voice.
  • He's reluctant to kill Greg Stillson, even after getting a vision of him causing a nuclear apocalypse as he doesn't want to take any life and tries to find other ways of stopping him, only deciding to kill him upon being convinced he has no choice.
  • He sacrifices his life to stop Stillson, as even though his assassination attempt fails, Stillson using a child (in the movie, Sarah's baby) as a human shield, exposing his true colors to the world and ensuring he will never be President, driving him to suicide in the movie, and Johnny calmly informs Stillson of this before dying peacefully.
